Recently, residents have been spending almost 90% of their time indoors, which presents a higher risk from inhalation of pollutants than when spending time outdoors. Therefore, controlling indoor air quality became important. It is reported that the lung diseases and mortality for occupants are increased when there is high density of ozone which is one of the pollutants among the indoor air. In addition, the reactions between ozone and building materials produce VOCs and formaldehyde. The studies to eliminate the ozone by building materials have been actively investigated. However, ozone removal and secondary pollutants from ozone reactions with building materials have not been reported in Korea. For this reason, the aim of this study is to introduce ozone removal by HVAC filters, various building materials, and eco-friendly building materials including the quantity of secondary pollutant emissions.
The air-side particulate fouling in the heat exchangers of HVAC applications degrades the performance of cooling capacity, pressure drop across a heat exchanger, and indoor air quality. Indoor and outdoor air contaminants foul heat exchangers. The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of the air-side particulate fouling materials in finned-tube heat exchangers of air conditioners. Air conditioners being used in the field such as inns, restaurants, and offices are collected in chronological order in use. Typical fouling materials on the heat exchangers include fibers and dusts ranged from 6.6 to 20.9 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in mass median diameter.
Owing to an increase in the air tightness of recent buildings, the natural ventilation rate was significantly lowered and the removal of accumulated moisture became difficult in these buildings. The hygrothermal performance of these buildings should be carefully considered to provide comfortable indoor environment by removing the moisture condensation risk and the mold growth potential. In this study, hygrothermal performance of two selected wall structures was investigated based on WUFI simulation program. The results displayed that the indoor temperature had impact on the moisture accumulation in the insulation layer for both modeled walls, showing that lower indoor temperature resulted in higher moisture accumulation, especially in the wood frame structure. Also, the yearly moisture accumulation profile exhibited a downward shift throughout the year by adding a vapour retarder with a lower sd-value. In addition, both of the two walls have condensation risk in winter, due to low temperature level. The wood frame structure has a bigger fluctuation and higher condensation risk than the concrete structure.
In order to reduce roadside and indoor air pollution for volatile organic compounds VOC), it may be necessary to apply photocatalyst-coated construction materials. This study evaluated the technical feasibility of the application of $TiO_2$ photocatalysis for the removal of VOC present in roadside or indoor air. The photocatalytic removal of five target VOC was investigated: benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and o,m,p-xylenes. Variables tested for the current study included ultraviolet(UV) light intensity coating materials, relative humidity (RH), and input concentrations. Prior to performing the parameter tests, adsorption of VOC onto the current experiment was surveyed, and no adsorption was observed. Stronger UV intensity provided higher photocatalytic destruction(PCD) efficiency of the target compounds. For higher humidity, higher PCD efficiency was observed. The PCD efficiency depended on coating material. Contrary to certain previous findings, lower PCD efficiencies were observed for the experimental condition of higher input concentrations. The current findings suggested that the four parameters tested in the present study should be considered for the application of photocatalyst-coated construction materials in cleaning VOC of roadside or indoor air.
Recently, there is a problem that is most important in constructing buildings and building materials. It is a harmful substance generated in buildings. These harmful substances are CO2, radon and formaldehyde, volatile organic compounds generated from building materials. These are bad for the human body, may have a negative effect and cause large illnesses such as cancer. Recently built apartments have a high density, so there is a problem that harmful substances do not escape well. As a result, people's interest in indoor air quality is growing and in order to solve this problem and various researches are being conducted on the materials used for concrete pouring to find out how much the materials used adsorb harmful substances. this study uses carbon black as a material that can adsorb these harmful substances. The purpose of this study is to measure the bending strength, compressive strength, and to determine whether the paste containing carbon black can improve indoor air quality.
Effort has been performed for latest 20 years to improve resident's comfort and indoor environment in building. And interest and effort to improve indoor air environment among various indoor environment elements have continuously increased since 1990s, because it is examined scientifically that various contaminants generated indoor affect human body. Specially, indoor air contaminants generated from apartments are those exhausted from resident's indoor environment, closing materials and household. Indoor air environment in buildings is different according to pollution degree, existence availability of pollution source, ventilation amount, and meteorology. It is known that other contaminants more than about 900 kinds generate according to a kind of work or action in a room. Specially, nowadays buildings are well insulated and confidentiality-centered for environment protection and economical side. So indoor air contaminants are generated from indoor air pollution sauces of unprepared ventilation, human body carbon dioxide emissions, and various building materials. when these are accumulated in long term human body, it is harmful to resident's health, but awareness for this is very insufficient. Because bedroom is space that people inhabit for a long time by unconscious state and indoor environment occupies important part for resident's health and quality of life at sleep, the actual condition of air quality is investigated, improvement countermeasure is considered, and ventilation amount is analyzed. In this study, putting case that the most longest stayed time is sleeping time when people inhabit in the apartment, the air quality according to volume of bedroom space at sleep was measured and analyzed, and the data acquired will be the basis for improvement on this.

The aim of the study was to assess the levels in typical central borough of phthalate exposure by monitoring children's facilities (19 kindergartens and 21 elementary schools) and households (17 old apartments and 22 new apartments) via sampling indoor floor dust. A vacuum cleaner specifically prepared for sampling dust was attached to a filter of a vacuum cleaner dust collecting container. During the sample preparation process, containers made of glass were used and analysis was performed using GC-MSD. The mean concentration of DEHP was $412{\mu}g/g$, DnBP was $24{\mu}g/g$, and BBzP was $10{\mu}g/g$ dust. The indoor characteristics including floor, wall materials, years after construction, water leakage history for the past three years, and ventilation were also examined to categorize phthalate esters from the dust samples. From the flooring and wallpaper materials of kindergartens and elementary schools, DEHP in the dust sample appeared at a statistically significant level (p<0.05) when PVC materials were present. DEHP in the indoor dust also increased significantly (p<0.01) during the construction period. The daily intake of DEHP measured from indoor dust was 0.08~$19.7{\mu}g/kg/day$ for children and 0.02~$1.1{\mu}g/kg/day$ for adults (women). The results clearly revealed that phthalate exposure is greater in children than in adults (women) due to the indoor dust.
Since the seventies and the oil crisis, energy-saving measures have led to a reduction in the ventilation of room. The use of synthetic materials which emit various chemical substances had led to an increase in the concentration of indoor pollutants. "Sick building syndrome (SBS)" and "Sick house syndrome (SHS)" are worldwide problems. Also, the number of complaints about indoor air pollution caused by VOCs (Volatile organic compound) and HCHO (Formaldehyde) has increased. It is important that evaluating and understanding emission of indoor air pollutant from building materials. The object of this study was to evaluate emission test method for flooring such as wood based flooring, carpet tile, rubber tile, PVC sheet and tile, and to determine emission of TVOC and form-aldehyde. The quantity of TVOC and carbonyl compounds emission were sampled and measured by Tenax TA and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MSD), 2,4-DNPH cartrige with ozone scrubber and high performance liquid from flooring. The TVOC concentration emitted from carpet tile was ($7.419\;mg/m^2 h$) the highest among 5 groups of test materials. In wood based flooring and PVC tile, the emitted concentration of toluene was high. And the dodecane emission was highest in carpet. The concentration of TVOC decreased by an increase in emission test period. After 7 days, the concentration of TVOC from floorings were about 50% below of the concentration at the first day. TVOC emission from wood based flooring, carpet tile, rubber tile, PVC sheet and tile were decreased in 28 days and remained steady after about 15 days. The concentration of formaldehyde emission from floorings showed extremely low.
Indoor air quality is of increasing concern because it is closely related human health. An air handling unit (AHU) can be used to control the indoor air quality related to particulate matters and $CO_2$ as well as air conditioning such as temperature and humidity of indoor air. An electrostatic precipitator has a high collection efficiency and low pressure drop, however, ozone can possibly generate from its chargers, which is one of drawbacks to apply it for indoor air control. Here we compared four charging electrodes such as a $50{\mu}m$ tungsten wire, a $100{\mu}m$ tungsten wire, a $16{\mu}m$-thickness Al foil and a carbon fabric comprised of $5-10{\mu}m$ fibers. The carbon fabric electrode showed a superior particle collection efficiency and a lower ozone generation at a given power consumption compared to tungsten wires of 50, $100{\mu}m$ and an Al foil electrode. This low ozone generating, micro-sized electrode can be applied to the electrostatic precipitator in AHU for indoor air control.
The aims of this study were to grasp the real condition state and clarify the characteristics and influence of pollutants on the indoor air pollution in occupied apartment units. The research method was to measure the pollution levels of indoor air pollution, and investigate characteristics of the pollutants such as the outdoor environment, elapsed time after construction, finished materials, temperature, relative humidity, space extension, purchase with furniture and electric appliances, built-in closets, and method for cleaning the air. And these were made a comparition between industrial and residential area. The VOCs and formaldehyde concentration in indoor air were measured the 6 household in residental area and 5 household in industrial area. In conclusion, the concentration such as benzene, ethylbenzene, toluene, xylene, styrene showed the pollution state within permissible levels, however formaldehyde concentration has need a lot of attention as ever. And it turned out that the influence with reference to emission from building materials on indoor air pollution lessened under 18 months elapsed time after construction.
