Since airborne bacteria have been known to aggravate indoor air quality, studies on reducing bacteria particles increase recently. In this study, a chamber(0.8m x 0.8m x 1.56m) system was built in order to simulate real conditions for reducing airborne bacteria, and evaluated by a simple aerosol reduction test. A method utilizing CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulation was used to detect the horizontal cross-sectional area which represents particle distribution in the chamber. Then an air-cleaner with HEPA filter and Carbon Fiber Ionizer was located on that area for aerosol reduction test. The CFD result found the area was located at 0.2m height from the bottom of the chamber, and the test showed aerosol reduction efficiencies using measurements of number concentration and CFU(colony forming unit) per each case. At the measurement of number concentration, the reduction efficiency of air-cleaner with filter and ionizer(Case 3) was about 90% after 4 minutes from the stop of the bacteria injection, and that with only filter(Case 2) was about 90% after 8 minutes from the beginning. Lastly, that without filter and ionizer(Case 1) was about 30% after 10 minutes. At the measurement of CFU, it shows similar results but it is related to viability of bio-aerosol.
Objectives : The purpose of the study is to examine the effect of the indoor environmental factors of dental hygienists on physical symptoms. Methods : The subjects were 210 dental hygienists in dental hospitals and clinics in Seoul, Gyeonggi Province, Incheon and South Chungnam Province from May 1 to June 20, 2013. Results : There were significant differences between the presence or absence of windows in respiratory symptoms and eye symptoms. Room temperature, bad smell, and dry humidity had significant influences on physical and respiratory symptoms. Dermatological and ophthalmological symptoms were affected by dryness, smell and dusts. Dusts and bad smell also had influences on a variety of subjective symptoms. Conclusions : The indoor environments of dental hospitals and clinics affect the respiratory, dermatological, and ophthalmological symptoms because various hazardous materials are generated by the dental treatment. Therefore dental hygienists should have a correct understanding of bacteria, dusts and bio-aerosol in order to ensure the successful environmental control.

An experimental investigation of the gas-phase photooxidation of toluene-NO$_{x}$-air mixtures at sub-ppm concentrations has been carried out in a 6.9 ㎥, indoor smog chamber irradiated by blacklights. Measured parameters in the toluene-NO$_{x}$ experiments included aerosol, $O_3$, NO, NO$_2$, NO$_{x}$ CO, SO$_2$ toluene, and air temperature. The initial toluene concentration ranged from 225 ppb to 991 ppb and the initial concentration ratio of toluene/NO$_{x}$ in ppbC/ppb was in the range of 5~20. It was found that the variation of aerosol number concentration with irradiation time caused by the photooxidation of toluene-NO$_{x}$-air mixtures depended on the initial toluene concentration for similar concentration ratio of toluene/NO$_{x}$. The dependency of initial toluene concentration on the photooxidation of toluene-NO$_{x}$-air mixtures for toluene/NO$_{x}$= 5~6 seemed to be opposite to that for toluene/NO$_{x}$=10~11. The maximum number concentration of aerosols formed by photooxidation and the aerosol yield depended on both initial toluene concentration and initial concentration ratio of toluene/NO$_{x}$. In this study, the aerosol yield, defined as aerosol formed per unit toluene consumed, was found to be 0.01~0.16.und to be 0.01~0.16.
Successful energy conservation and good indcfor air quality (IAQ) are highly dependent on ventilation system. Air filtration is a primary solution of indoor air control strategies in terms of reducing energy consumption and improving ihdoor air quality. A conventional system with bypass filter, as it is called variable-air-volume/bypass filtration system (VAV/BPFS), is a variation of the conventional variable air volume (VAV) systems, which is designed to eliminate indoor air pollutant and to save energy. Bypass filtration system equipped with a high-efficiency particulate filter and carbon absorbent provides additional cleaned air into indoor environments and maintain good IAQ for human health. The objectives of this research were to compare the relative total decay rate of indoor air pollutant concentrations, and to develop a mathematical model simulating the performance of VAV/BPFS. All experiments were performed in chamber under the controlled conditions. The specific conclusions of this research are: 1. The VAV/BPFS system is more efficient than the VAV system in removing indoor air pollutant concentration. The total decay rates of aerosol, and total volatile organic compound (TVOC) for the VAV/BPFS system were higher than those of the conventional VAV system. 2. IAQ model predictions of each pollutant agree closely with the measured values. 3. According to IAQ model evaluation, reduction of outdoor supply air results in decreased dilution removal rate and on increased bypass filtration removal rate with the VAV/BPFS. As a results, we recommends the VAV/BPFS as an alternative to conventional VAV systems.
In this study, the indoor fine dust concentration in an office of the Korea Knowledge Industry Center was measured for about 80 hours when the concentration of atmospheric PM2.5 was very high. The effect of the operation of the air cleaner and the forced ventilation system on the indoor PM2.5 was investigated, and the particle size distribution of the indoor and outdoor particles was analyzed. When forced ventilator and air purifiers were partially used, the indoor PM2.5 concentrations were maintained between 27.7 ㎍/㎥ and 32.9 ㎍/㎥ when the atmospheric PM2.5 was 127.7 ㎍/㎥ to 141.6 ㎍/㎥ during working hours. It is more effective to operate the air purifier without operating the forced ventilation system when the concentration of the PM2.5 is high since the PM2.5 penetrating the installed filter is continuously introduced indoor from the outside.

Three different commercial particle counters were used to measure the PM2.5 particles in this study. An Aerosol Spectrometer (AS) 1.109 model of Grimm and a Particle Sensor (PS) 3030 model of HCT were compared with an Aerodynamic Particle Sizer (APS) 3321 model of TSI. The responses of these instruments were compared for four sizes ($1.0{\mu}m$, $1.5{\mu}m$, $2.0{\mu}m$ and $2.5{\mu}m$) of polystyrene latex (PSL) particles and indoor air particles of the office room. The mode diameter, particle size distribution and total particle number concentration of PSL particles were measured by each instrument. In the office room, the total particle number concentration was measured for 25 minutes. In results of particle size distribution and mode diameter, the APS 3321 (52 size-channels) was more accurate than the AS 1.109 (31 size-channels) and PS-3030 (10-szie channels) since the APS has more number of size-channels than the other instruments. However, AS 1.109 and PS-3030 provided similar results of total particle number concentration to those from the APS 3321. In results of office room test, there were no significant difference from each instrument similar to results of PSL test.

A single particle analytical technique, named low-Z particle electron probe X-ray microanalysis, was applied to characterize four samples collected at an underground shopping area connected to Dongdeamun subway station, in January and May 2006. Based on the analysis of their chemical compositions of the samples, many distinctive particle types are identified and the major chemical species are observed to be soil-derived particles, iron-containing particles. sulfates. nitrates, and carbonaceous particles. which are encountered both in coarse and fine fractions. Carbonaceous particles exist in carbon-rich and organic. Soil derived particles such as aluminosilicates, AlSi/C, $CaCO_3\;and\;SiO_2$ are more frequently encountered in spring samples than winter samples. Nitrate- and sulfate-con taming particles are more frequently encountered in winter samples, and those nitrate- and sulfate-containing particles mostly exist in the chemical forms of $Ca(CO_3,\;NO_3),\;Ca(NO_3,\;SO_4),\;(Na,\;Mg)NO_3\;and\;(Mg,\;Na)(NO_3,\;SO_4)$. Fe-containing particles which came from nearby subway platform are in the range of about 10% relative abundances for all the samples. It is observed that nitrate- and sulfate-containing particles and carbonaceous particles are much more frequently encountered in indoor aerosol samples than in outdoor aerosols, implying that $NO_x,\;SO_x$, and VOCs at the underground shopping area were more partitioned into aerosol phase.

Particulate infectious sources, including infectious viruses, can float in the air, causing airborne infections. To prevent indoor airborne infection, dilution control by ventilation and indoor air cleaners are frequently used. In this study, the risk of airborne infection by the operation of these two techniques was evaluated. In case of dilution control by ventilation, a high efficiency air filter was embedded at the inlet of supply air. In this study, infectious source reduction devices such as indoor air cleaner include all kinds of mechanical-filters, UV-photo catalysts and air ionizers through which air flow is forced by fans. Two mathematical models for influenza virus were applied in an infant care room where infants and young children are active, and the risk reduction efficiency was compared. As a result, in the case of individually operating the ventilator or the infectious source reduction device, the airborne infection risk reduction efficiencies were 55.2~61.2% and 53.8~59.9%, respectively. When both facilities were operated, it was found that the risk of airborne infection was reduced about 72.2~76.8%. Therefore, simultaneous operation of ventilation equipment and infectious source reduction device is the most effective method for safe environment that minimizes the risk of airborne infection of respiratory infectious diseases. In the case of a space where sufficient ventilation operation is difficult, it was found that the operation of an infectious source reduction device is important to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. This study is meaningful in that it provides an academic basis for strategies for preventing airborne infection of respiratory infectious diseases.
In this study, the formation of nanoparticles by a reaction of ozone with the volatile organic compounds(VOCs) emitted from a commercial home cleaner liquid was investigated using a $1-m^3$ reaction chamber($1{\times}1{\times}1m$). The home cleaner liquid was found to contain many VOCs, particularly terpenes. Some of these VOCs are known to readily react with ozone, forming indoor secondary pollutants. The correlation of particle concentration and reacted ozone concentration was examined with injections of three different ozone concentrations; 50, 100 and 200 ppb. The secondary nanoparticles were formed faster, with their numbers and mass concentrations becoming higher on increasing the concentration of ozone injected.
In this study, the concentration of fine indoor dust and the size distribution of fine indoor dust were analyzed by measuring the dust generated during the cleaning process of an indoor office. We measured $PM_{10}$, $PM_{2.5}$, and $PM_{1.0}$ and analyzed the size distributions of dust larger than $0.3{\mu}m$ in diameter during cleaning. The results showed that the concentration of $PM_{10}$ increased rapidly during cleaning, however $PM_{1.0}$ did not increase. Before cleaning with a broom, the fine dust concentration was about $50{\mu}g/m^3$, but increased to about $400{\mu}g/m^3$ as cleaning progressed. In the case of indoor cleaning with a vacuum cleaner, the concentration of $PM_{10}$ increased during the cleaning process and the increase of $PM_{2.5}$ was relatively small. $PM_{1.0}$ did not increase as in the case of cleaning the broom.
