Residential Buildings should provide high-quality, comfortable environments to support the activities of their occupants. The indoor environment of residential buildings, which includes thermal, lighting, acoustic, and indoor air quality, has a significant impact on health and quality of life. The comfortable living environment in residential buildings result from appropriately combining these environmental quality factors, and the performance of building systems must be compatible with the activities of the occupants. The objective of this research is to investigate and analyze the relationship between physical environmental conditions and occupant responses for improving environmental quality (EQ) in apartment buildings with four different building orientations (i.e. E, W, S, N) in two different seasons (i.e. winter and summer). The occupant survey was conducted in actual apartment buildings. The Physical environmental conditions in apartment buildings differed substantially depending on space, outdoor weather conditions and building orientations. Each space within the same apartment building had different environmental conditions. Combinations of unbalanced physical environmental conditions in apartment building decrease occupants' satisfactions and their perceptions of overall residential quality. Occupants' satisfaction and their responses to physical characteristics of their residential environment is related to thermal, lighting, acoustic, and indoor air conditions in their buildings. The result from this research will help designers and researchers to identify problems and develop solutions for improving environmental quality from the occupants' point of view.
Purpose: This study aimed at improving the indoor environment of the office building by measuring the indoor environment and conducting a survey. Method: The measurement was conducted from January 13 to March 16 in 2012, targeting 44 sites in same office building located in Seoul, South Korea. The lists of measurement such as dry-blub temperature, relative humidity, formaldehyde (HCHO), asbestos, carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and particle pollution (PM10) were measured. In addition, illuminance which belongs to light environment and noise in sound[acoustical] environment were measured respectively. Result: The buildings showed overall pleasant conditions. In terms of the thermal, air, sound, and visual environment, each measurements were satisfied with the requirements in standard, within pleasant ranges, except several sites. However, the survey results were revealed that the office workers were mostly dissatisfied with their indoor environment. Given that the measured values were mostly within standards, the results of survey might have resulted from a compensation mentality biased toward the subjects in psychological terms.
Purpose: This study desires to investigate an effect of indoor temperature, humidity, and illuminance targeting a planting system of double-skin facade and cavity space adjacent to the outside within a certain period of winter. Through this, the study suggests a basic material about an energy conservation effect of double window system using planting to reduce heating load of a building in winter, so desires to contribute to indoor thermal comfort effect and illuminance correction study of double window and indoor plant. Method: Considering effects such as day and night climatic elements and air conditions in winter, illuminance measurement was conducted through a double-skin facade of space, a subject of the measurement, on the basis of practical residence time of a resident, and this study analyzed characteristics of indoor illuminance about this. The study measured and compared a change of insolation, dry-bulb temperature, and relative humidity at each indoor-outdoor measuring point, so measured and compared characteristics of an indoor temperature effect by elements of double-skin facade and indoor plant. Result: Through this study, the researcher could determine that indoor plant within double window in winter not only blocks solar radiation but also photosynthesizes, so is somewhat disadvantageous to winter thermal comfort reducing heating load. In addition, solar radiation going through interior plays a role to bring down somewhat high humidity to about 50% of reasonable humidity, so plays a direct role of maintenance of comfortable indoor space. Although there are effects such as blocking of solar radiation and temperature reduction, this has a positive influence on humidity control and proper illuminance distribution. The researcher could determine that illuminance, temperature, and humidity by solar radiation penetration for the whole measuring time play a role to supplement indoor environment mutually.
The on-line optimal control algorithm for central heating system has been researched for minimizing energy consumption while maintaining the comfort of indoor thermal environment in terms of the environmental variables such as indoor heating load and outdoor temperature variation. This study has been done by using TRNSYS Program in order to analyze the central heating system. The optimal control algorithm shows good energy Performances in comparison with the conventional one.
The purpose of this study was to examine theory about indoor thermal comfort-environment as well as to determine thermal sensation and physical responses for men in summer and winter indoor environment, under various air temperature and relative humidity, with male university students. Subjective Evaluation, Heart rate(Electrocardiogram, ECG), Electroencephalo gram(EEG) were examined. We found that comfort of people was achieved at SET*. 24.7$^{\circ}C$, -0.82${\alpha}$-wave) both in summer and in winter.
Natural ventilation is major strategy of 'sustainable building'. It aims to supply fresh air to the indoor, and to remove heat from the indoor during summer. In the latter point of view, natural ventilation can be grouped into two main strategies, daytime ventilation and night cooing. If we take advantage of these two natural ventilation strategies, indoor thermal comfort can be significantly improved. This study focused on grasping the current situation and problem of indoor thermal comfort of the naturally ventilated residential buildings to seek for direction of later studies. Additionally, thermal comfort of residence where the interior blind and exterior insulation were applied was analyzed. It was analyzed that the percentage of the time which satisfy the indoor acceptable operative temperature during summer was 90 ~ 95% and the heat control performance of natural ventilation has a limitation. When the interior blind and exterior insulation were applied, indoor thermal comfort was significantly improved. However, it still need more improvement.
This paper investigates the simplified comfort index and control logic for VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) system by using 3 environmental factors such as temperature, humidity and air flow. Indoor test under thermal load was conducted to explore relationship of each environment factors that is related to simplified comfort index. Simplified comfort function that has 3 environmental variables was proposed based on survey results. Each factor is measured and comfort preference was surveyed by more than 30 subjects in the indoor comfort test. Moreover, control logic for VRF system was developed and then simulated by using thermal load calculation method and verified with test. The proposed comfort function was in good agreement with survey results, and also verification test trend of comfort change and maintenance are quite similar with survey. Furthermore, through the additional test data analysis some differences of comfort according to position of people staying in the test room were additionally investigated by air flow. People being under an exit of air in the indoor air-conditioner feel more comfortable condition and speed of response to comfort change is relatively fast.
This paper presents a novel method for satisfying the thermal comfort of indoor environment and reducing the summer peak demand power by minimizing the power consumption for an Air-conditioner within a space. Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) use the fixed duty cycle control method regardless of the indoor thermal environment. However, this method has disadvantages that energy saving depends on the set-point value of the Air-Conditioner and direct load control (DLC) has no net effects on Air-conditioners if the appliance has a lower operating cycle than the fixed duty cycle. In this paper, the variable duty cycle control method is proposed in order to compensate the weakness of conventional fixed duty cycle control method and improve the satisfaction of residents and the reduction of peak demand. The proposed method estimates the predict mean vote (PMV) at the next step with predicted temperature and humidity using the back propagation neural network model. It is possible to reduce the energy consumption by maintaining the Air-conditioner's OFF state when the PMV lies in the thermal comfort range. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed variable duty cycle control method, the case study is performed using the historical data on Sep. 7th, 2001 acquired at a classroom in Seoul and the obtained results are compared with the fixed duty cycle control method.
This experimental study was to analyze thermal comfort and indoor air quality(IAQ) with ventilation and humidification in the classroom when system air conditioner was operated. The thermal comfort was estimated by the PMV index and the concentration of $CO_2$ and total suspended particle(TSP) were measured and compared with ventilation and humidification. As a result, the class room temperature distribution was $2{\sim}5^{\circ}C$ low during operating ventilation system and humidification. At 60% RH, PMV values of measuring points were ranged from +0.5 to -0.5 indicating optimal the range of thermal comfort. The average concentration of $CO_2$ gas and TSP were reduced 645 ppm, 0.17 mg/$m^3$ respectively, during operating the ventilation system. From the results, to maintain comfortable environment in the heated classroom, the ventilation and humidification were needed in winter season.
