  • Present study explains some experimental results on the aerodynamic noise of the cross-flow fan usually installed in the indoor unit of the room air-conditioners and provides a simple reduction method of radiating sound to decrease the total noise level. The spectrums of the noise of the cross-flow fan were analyzed by the spectral decomposition method to characterize the generated sound. The unsteady fluctuating flow field was also measured using the I-type hot-wire probe. Comparing the spectral characteristics of the sound and the flow velocity, a useful noise reduction method was proposed which bounds the region with a fence where the flow fluctuations were noticeably changed in the same fashion as the source spectral distribution functions vary. To validate the proposed method for reducing noise generated by the cross-flow fan, the sound pressure levels of the cross-flow fan system were compared of the experimental rig with and without the bounding fence for various flow rates.

  • For the air-conditioner, refrigerant induced noise and vibration should be the problem when it reduced airflow rate in order to reduce the noise at low mode. With the test, it could be verified that one of the main reason for refrigerant induced noise were the velocity and flowing induced force of the refrigerant at the inlet of evaporator. So in order to reduce this velocity with same mass flow rate of refrigerant, quality at the evaporator inlet should be minimized. And in order to reduce flowing induced force of the refrigerant, flowing direction change should be eliminated. So in this paper, it would like to review the characteristics of refrigerating cycle at first and find how the quality and flowing induced force can be minimized.

  • Unlike household refrigerators, commercial refrigerators are composed of separate indoor and outdoor units. The outdoor unit of most commercial refrigerators is designed to run at a fixed speed, which results in low energy efficiency and loud fan noise. Moreover, it cannot respond flexibly to changing thermal load in the indoor unit. Inverter type outdoor units can address such problems through speed changes based on information obtained from the indoor unit. However, using two units from different manufacturers is often not a viable solution. If condition changes in the indoor unit can be detected without communication between the two units, it is possible to adjust the speed of the outdoor unit. This paper attempts to analyze the signal from the outdoor unit when the condition of the indoor unit changes by varying the thermal load.

  • The air flows in building caused by thermal buoyancy, known as the stack effect, have a pronounced influence on both the indoor environment (thermal environment, noise, draught and contaminant diffusion) and energy needs in high-rise buildings. Prior studies for airflow in high-rise buildings were focused on the degree of stack effect and countermeasures. The wind pressure was neglected during the calculation of the indoor airflow in high-rise buildings to clarify the effect of thermal buoyancy in previous studies. However, wind is an important driving force of indoor airflows in buildings with the stack effect. In this study, the effect of wind pressure on indoor airflow in high-rise building when the stack effect is dominant in winter was analyzed. In this paper, methods that involved considering the wind pressure in airflow network simulation were analyzed.

  • In this paper, we present the practical application of an Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) for an Indoor Mobile Localization System using ultrasonic sensors. It is true that many kinds of localization techniques have been researched for several years in order to contribute to the realization of a ubiquitous system; particularly, such a ubiquitous system needs a high degree of accuracy to be practical and efficient. Unfortunately, a number of localization systems for indoor space do not have sufficient accuracy to establish any special task such as precise position control of a moving target even though they require comparatively high developmental cost. Therefore, we developed an Indoor Mobile Localization System having high localization performance; specifically, the Unscented Kalman Filter is applied for improving the localization accuracy. In addition, we also present the additive filter named 'Pre-filtering' to compensate the performance of the estimation algorithm. Pre-filtering has been developed to overcome negative effects from unexpected external noise so that localization through the Unscented Kalman Filter has come to be stable. Moreover, we tried to demonstrate the performance comparison of the Unscented Kalman Filter and another estimation algorithm, such as the Unscented Particle Filter (UPF), through simulation for our system.

  • The purpose of this study is to measure some physical environmental factors and to doucument students' perceptions of them. 11 middle schools in Cheju City were divided into four areas according to their locations and two schools were selected for the study. 144 thirteen-year-old students in two middle school in a overcrowded area in Cheju City-one middle school building is insulated and the other is not insulated-were taken for the questionnaire survey. The finding of the study are as follows: 1) The classrooms were not equipped with any heating equipment. The buildings are not insulated well. As a result, the room temperature was much lower(12.9-16.2℃) than comfortable indoor temperature in winter(21.5-24.5℃). The classroom were found to be colder(12.9-16.2℃) than usual pleasant indoor temperature(21.5-24.5℃) in winter. 2) The classroom were so far from the street(20m) that there was little noise from traffic. Nevertheless, the noise level was higher(62.5-66.2 dB(A), when the windows were open; 51.7-62.8dB(A), when closed than the noise tolerance level specified in the Environment Protection Laws(50.0dB(A)). 3) As for the visual environment, the location of classroom, the adequate sun exposure, and the total states of windows in classrooms influenced on the illuminance. While standard indoor illuminance is 300 Lux, the classrooms facing south had illuminance of 231 Lux, from day light: and the ones facing west, 380 Lux. 4) Students generally found other aspects of the physical environment of their classrooms unsatisfactory. Chalk dust was generated to a serious extent near the main chalkboard(0.25mg/㎥) of classrooms.

  • In this paper, we analyze the performance of BPM (Bi-Phase Modulation) UWB (Ultra Wide Band) multiple access system using PN (Pseudo Noise) code based time hopping sequence in indoor wireless channels. In particular, we compare BPM UWB multiple access system with PPM (Pulse Position Modulation) UWB multiple access system in terms of signalling and demodulation schemes. Moreover, we analytically evaluate the performance of these UWB systems by deriving the bit error rate expressions under the assumption that pulse energy and data transmission rate are identical for both systems. Simulation results in additive white Gaussian noise and realistic indoor multipath wireless channels show that the performance of BPM scheme is approximately 1 dB better than that of PPM scheme. However, the performance discrepancy becomes negligible as the number of users increases.

  • Along with the increase in the standard of living, the interest and awareness level of the public about environmental issues have also gradually increased. Recently, time spent on indoor activities have increased and the need for awareness and demand on methods in improving the quality of an indoor environment has been recognized. The purpose of this study is to sense the environment information through real-time monitoring of the room environment by using the IoT based technology and to maintain and improve the indoor environment to an appropriate level through the developed interlocking controller device. This provides an automatic control system in improving the indoor environment at home and other small areas like general offices in place of the traditional passive interior environmental improvement actions or large-scale facility control system. A status analysis with the relative reference values of the air quality and CO2, temperature and humidity and illumination and noise was applied through transmitting a control signal to automatic control module in accordance with the nine indoor environment standards set to improve the indoor environment.

  • In this study, recognized building-related health symptoms of various workers in dental college hospitals are surveyed and analyzed in order to improve indoor environment at dental college hospitals. We conducted a questionnaire survey for 682 workers in three dental college hospitals located in Seoul from Sep. 20 to Oct. 8, 2004. Most workers at dental hospitals complained about noise, poor ventilation, dusty environment, and air dryness. SBS symptoms score for subjects was 1.43${\pm}$0.74 (often feel) and major symptoms was throat, CNS, eye, and nose symptoms. Recognized Building-related health symptoms are significantly related to tasks, working experience, job-satisfaction, indoor environment recognition index, medical history, used to special material, and number of dental unit chair. Also working places and ventilation are significantly related to the symptom. Based on the results, it can be said that special dental treatment causes undesirable environment such as noise, dust, and bad odor. It is also related to recognized building related health symptoms reported by workers at dental hospitals. So managemental efforts are needed to improve indoor environment which is related by dental treatment.
