  • Indexing techniques are used to implement selective tuning in wireless environments Indices are broadcast together with data to help mobile clients locate the required information. As a result, clients stay in doze mode most of the time. The drawback of this solution is that broadcast cycles are lengthened due to additional index information. In location-aware mobile services(LAMSs), it is important to reduce the query response time, since a late query response nay contain out-of-date information. In this paper, we present a broadcast-based spatial query processing method (BBS) designed to support k-NN query processing. In the BBS, broadcasted data objects are sorted sequentially based on their locations, and the server broadcasts the location dependent data along with an index segment. The performance of this scheme is investigated in relation to various environmental variables, such as the distributions of the data objects, the average speed of the clients and the size of the service area.

  • Because of efficient space utilization and fast key search times, B-trees have been widely accepted for the use of indexes in HDD-based DBMSs. However, when the B-ree is stored in flash memory, its costly operations of node updates may impair the performance of a DBMS. This is because the random updates in B-tree's leaf nodes could tremendously enlarge I/O costs for the garbage collecting actions of flash storage. To solve the problem, we make all the parents of leaf nodes the virtual nodes, which are not stored physically. Rather than, those nodes are dynamically generated and buffered by referring to their child nodes, at their access times during key searching. By performing node updates and tree reconstruction within a single flash block, our proposed B-tree can reduce the I/O costs for garbage collection and update operations in flash. Moreover, our scheme provides the better performance of key searches, compared with earlier flash-based B-trees. Through a mathematical performance model, we verify the performance advantages of the proposed flash B-tree.

  • In spatial databases, R-tree is one of the most widely used indexing structures and many variants have been proposed for its performance improvement. Among these variants, Hilbert R-tree is a representative method using Hilbert curve to process large amounts of data without high cost split techniques to construct the R-tree. This Hilbert R-tree, however, is hardly applicable to large-scale applications in practice mainly due to high pre-processing costs and slow bulk-load time. To overcome the limitations of Hilbert R-tree, we propose a novel approach for parallelizing Hilbert mapping and thus accelerating bulk-loading of Hilbert R-tree on GPU memory. Hilbert R-tree based on GPU improves bulk-loading performance by applying the inversed-cell method and exploiting parallelism for packing the R-tree structure. Our experimental results show that the proposed scheme is up to 45 times faster compared to the traditional CPU-based bulk-loading schemes.

  • Positional data of moving objects can be regularly sampled in order to minimize the cost of data collection in LBS. Since position data which are regularly sampled cannot include the changes of position occurred between sampling periods, sampled position data differ from the data predicted by a time parameterized linear function. Uncertain position data caused by these differences make the accuracy of the range queries for present positions diminish in the TPR tree. In this paper, we propose the uncertainty region to handle the range queries for uncertain position data. The uncertainty region is defined by the position data predicted by the time parameterized linear function and the estimated uncertainty error. We also present the weighted recent uncertainty error policy and the kalman filter policy to estimate the uncertainty error. For performance test, the query processor based by the uncertainty region is implemented in the TPR tree. The experiments show that the Proposed query processing methods are more accurate than the existing method by 15%.

  • The trajectory of a tag in RFID system is represented as a interval that connects two spatiotemporal locations captured when the tag enters and leaves the vicinity of a reader. Whole trajectories of a tag are represented as a set of unconnected interval because the location of the tag which left the vicinity of a reader is unknown until it enters the vicinity of another reader. The problems are that trajectories of a tag are not connected. It takes a long time to find trajectories of a tag because it leads to searching the whole index. To solve this problem, we propose a technique that links two intervals of the tag and an index scheme called SLR-tree. We also propose a sharing technique of link information between two intervals which enhances space utilization of nodes, and propose a split policy that preserves shared-link information. And finally, we evaluate the performance of the proposed index and prove that the index processes history queries efficiently.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the performance of XML retrieval based on ORDBMSs(Object-Relational Database Management Systems) approach. This paper describes indexing and retrieval methods for XML documents and the methodologies of experiments at INEX(Initiative for the Evaluation of XML retrieval). Like any other traditional information retrieval experiment, the test collection was consists of documents, topics/queries, task, relevance assessments and evaluation. EXIMA$^{TM}$ Supply, a kind of native XML DB based on ORDBMS technologies, is used for this experiment. Although this approach has many benefits, for example, no delay in storing and searching XML documents. but it showed relatively disappointed retrieval performance at INEX 2002. This result may caused since the given topics had to be decomposed and modified to be processed by the XPath processor, and during this modification the original meaning of topics can be changed inevitably and some important information nay pass over.r.

  • Recently, data access control policies have not been applied for authorized or unauthorized persons properly and information leakage incidents have occurred due to database security vulnerabilities. In the traditional database access control methods, administrators grant permissions for accessing database objects to users. However, these methods couldn't be applied for diverse access control policies to the database. In addition, another database security method which uses data encryption is difficult to utilize data indexing. Thus, this paper proposes an enhanced database access control system via a packet analysis method between client and database server in network to apply diverse security policies. The proposed security system can be applied the applications with access control policies related to specific factors such as date, time, SQL string, the number of result data and etc. And it also assures integrity via a public key certificate and MAC (Message Authentication Code) to prevent modification of user information and query sentences.

  • Video retrieval and indexing are performed by comparing feature similarities between key frames in shot after detecting a scene change and extracting key frames from the shot. Typical image features such as color, shape, and texture are used in content-based video and image retrieval. Many approaches for integrating these features have been studied. However, the issue of these approaches is how to appropriately assign weighting of key frame features at query time. Therefore, we propose a new video retrieval method using adaptively weighted image features. We performed computer simulations in test databases which consist of various kinds of key frames. The experimental results show that the proposed method has better performance than previous works in respect to several performance evaluations such as precision vs. recall, retrieval efficiency, and ranking measure.

Abstract Spatiotemporal databases are able to support an efficient spatial management as well as historical management for an object in the real world. It is very complex to manage these two dimensions why there exists on difference of inborn property of temporal and spatial dimensions. Therefore an efficient access method should be studied, and it can be done by means of development of efficient indexing technology. However, there is a few related work in the research of access methods of spatiotemporal data. Also the previous works do not support the concept of history for spatial object, and only support the relative time among multimedia objects. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a unified Spatiotemporal index model as an efficient index for Spatiotemporal data. And we not only design Spatiotemporal index that has been extended to historical management facility on the basis of conventional R-tree, but also implement it. Finally we have evaluated performance of index for the various kinds of Spatiotemporal operations.

  • In this paper we propose an efficient content-based image retrieval method using the color and wavelet based texture features. The color features are obtained from soft-color histograms of the global image and the wavelet-based texture features are obtained from the invariant moments of the high-pass sub-band through the spatial-frequency analysis of the wavelet transform. The proposed system, called a color and texture based two-step retrieval(CTBTR), is composed of two-step query operations for an efficient image retrieval. In the first-step matching operation, the color histogram features are used to filter out the dissimilar images quickly from a large image database. The second-step matching operation applies the wavelet based texture features to the retained set of images to retrieve all relevant images successfully. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm yields more improved retrieval accuracy with computationally efficiency than the previous methods.
