This paper discusses an index-based subsequence matching that supports time warping in large sequence databases. Time warping enables finding sequences with similar patterns even when they are of different lengths. In earlier work, we suggested an efficient method for whole matching under time warping. This method constructs a multidimensional index on a set of feature vectors, which are invariant to time warping, from data sequences. For filtering at feature space, it also applies a lower-bound function, which consistently underestimates the time warping distance as well as satisfies the triangular inequality. In this paper, we incorporate the prefix-querying approach based on sliding windows into the earlier approach. For indexing, we extract a feature vector from every subsequence inside a sliding window and construct a multi-dimensional index using a feature vector as indexing attributes. For query precessing, we perform a series of index searches using the feature vectors of qualifying query prefixes. Our approach provides effective and scalable subsequence matching even with a large volume of a database. We also prove that our approach does not incur false dismissal. To verily the superiority of our method, we perform extensive experiments. The results reseal that our method achieves significant speedup with real-world S&P 500 stock data and with very large synthetic data.
In this paper, we address efficient processing of subsequence matching in time-series databases. We first point out the performance problems occurring in the index searching of a prior method for subsequence matching. Then, we propose a new method that resolves these problems. Our method starts with viewing the index searching of subsequence matching from a new angle, thereby regarding it as a kind of a spatial-join called a window-join. For speeding up the window-join, our method builds an R*-tree in main memory for f query sequence at starting of sub-sequence matching. Our method also includes a novel algorithm for joining effectively one R*-tree in disk, which is for data sequences, and another R*-tree in main memory, which is for a query sequence. This algorithm accesses each R*-tree page built on data sequences exactly cure without incurring any index-level false alarms. Therefore, in terms of the number of disk accesses, the proposed algorithm proves to be optimal. Also, performance evaluation through extensive experiments shows the superiority of our method quantitatively.

The set-based similar sequence matching method measures similarity not for an individual data item but for a set grouping multiple data items. In the method, the similarity of two sets is represented as the size of intersection between them. However, there is a critical performances issue for the method in twofold: 1) calculating intersection size is a time consuming process, and 2) the number of set pairs that should be calculated the intersection size is quite large. In this paper, we propose an index-based search method for improving performance of set-based similar sequence matching in order to solve these performance issues. Our method consists of two parts. In the first part, we convert the set similarity problem into the intersection size comparison problem, and then, provide an index structure that accelerates the intersection size calculation. Second, we propose an efficient set-based similar sequence matching method which exploits the proposed index structure. Through experiments, we show that the proposed method reduces the execution time by 30 to 50 times then the existing methods. We also show that the proposed method has scalability since the performance gap becomes larger as the number of data sequences increases.

Converting boundary images to time-series makes it feasible to perform boundary matching even on a very large image database, which is very important for interactive and fast matching. In recent research, there has been an attempt to perform fast matching considering partial denoising by converting the boundary image into time series. In this paper, to improve performance, we propose an index-building method considering all possible arbitrary denoising parameters for removing arbitrary partial noises. This is a challenging problem since the partial denoising boundary matching must be considered for all possible denoising parameters. We propose an efficient single index-building algorithm by constructing a minimum bounding rectangle(MBR) according to all possible denoising parameters. The results of extensive experiments conducted show that our index-based matching method improves the search performance up to 46.6 ~ 4023.6 times.
Subsequence matching is one of the most important operations in the field of data mining. The existing subsequence matching algorithms use only one index, and their performance gets worse as the difference between the length of a query sequence and the site of windows, which are subsequences of a same length extracted from data sequences to construct the index, increases. In this paper, we propose a new subsequence matching method based on index interpolation to overcome such a problem. An index interpolation method constructs two or more indexes, and performs search ing by selecting the most appropriate index among them according to the given query sequence length. In this paper, we first examine the performance trend with the difference between the query sequence length and the window size through preliminary experiments, and formulate a search cost model that reflects the distribution of query sequence lengths in the view point of the physical database design. Next, we propose a new subsequence matching method based on the index interpolation to improve search performance. We also present an algorithm based on the search cost formula mentioned above to construct optimal indexes to get better search performance. Finally, we verify the superiority of the proposed method through a series of experiments using real and synthesized data sets.
In this paper, we propose a new method for determining automatically the size of the matching window using histogram of the gradient in order to improve the performance of stereo matching using one-meter resolution satellite imagery. For each pixel, we generate Flatness Index Image by calculating the mean value of the vertical or horizontal intensity gradients of the 4-neighbors of every pixel in the entire image. The edge pixel has high flatness index value, while the non-edge pixel has low flatness index value. By using the histogram of the Flatness Index Image, we find a flatness threshold value to determine whether a pixel is edge pixel or non-edge pixel. If a pixel has higher flatness index value than the flatness threshold value, we classify the pixel into edge pixel, otherwise we classify the pixel into non-edge pixel. If the ratio of the number of non-edge pixels in initial matching window is low, then we consider the pixel to be in homogeneous region and enlarge the size of the matching window We repeat this process until the size of matching window reaches to a maximum size. In the experiment, we used IKONOS satellite stereo imagery and obtained more improved matching results than the matching method using fixed matching window size.
Normalization transform is very useful for finding the overall trend of the time-series data since it enables finding sequences with similar fluctuation patterns. The previous subsequence matching method with normalization transform, however, would incur index overhead both in storage space and in update maintenance since it should build multiple indexes for supporting arbitrary length of query sequences. To solve this problem, we propose a single index approach for the normalization transformed subsequence matching that supports arbitrary length of query sequences. For the single index approach, we first provide the notion of inclusion-normalization transform by generalizing the original definition of normalization transform. The inclusion-normalization transform normalizes a window by using the mean and the standard deviation of a subsequence that includes the window. Next, we formally prove correctness of the proposed method that uses the inclusion-normalization transform for the normalization transformed subsequence matching. We then propose subsequence matching and index building algorithms to implement the proposed method. Experimental results for real stock data show that our method improves performance by up to $2.5{\sim}2.8$ times over the previous method. Our approach has an additional advantage of being generalized to support many sorts of other transforms as well as normalization transform. Therefore, we believe our work will be widely used in many sorts of transform-based subsequence matching methods.
To achieve the noise reduction effect in boundary image matching, we use the moving average transform of time-series matching. Our motivation is based on an intuition that using the moving average transform we may exploit the noise reduction effect in boundary image matching as in time-series matching. To confirm this simple intuition, we first propose $\kappa$-order image matching, which applies the moving average transform to boundary image matching. A boundary image can be represented as a sequence in the time-series domain, and our $\kappa$-order image matching identifies similar images in this time-series domain by comparing the $\kappa$-moving average transformed sequences. Next, we propose an index-based matching method that efficiently performs $\kappa$-order image matching on a large volume of image databases, and formally prove the correctness of the index-based method. Moreover, we formally analyze the relationship between an order $\kappa$ and its matching result, and present a systematic way of controlling the noise reduction effect by changing the order $\kappa$. Experimental results show that our $\kappa$-order image matching exploits the noise reduction effect, and our index-based matching method outperforms the sequential scan by one or two orders of magnitude.
Sequence matching in time-series databases is an operation that finds the data sequences whose changing patterns are similar to that of a query sequence. Typically, sequence matching hires a multi-dimensional index for its efficient processing. In order to alleviate the dimensionality curse problem of the multi-dimensional index in high-dimensional cases, the previous methods for sequence matching apply the Discrete Fourier Transform(DFT) to data sequences, and take only the first two or three DFT coefficients as organizing attributes of the multi-dimensional index. This paper first points out the problems in such simple methods taking the firs two or three coefficients, and proposes a novel solution to construct the optimal multi -dimensional index. The proposed method analyzes the characteristics of a target database, and identifies the organizing attributes having the best discrimination power based on the analysis. It also determines the optimal number of organizing attributes for efficient sequence matching by using a cost model. To show the effectiveness of the proposed method, we perform a series of experiments. The results show that the Proposed method outperforms the previous ones significantly.
The MODerate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensor has 36 bands at 250m, 500m, 1km spatial resolution. However, 500m or 1km MODIS data exhibits a few limitations when low resolution data is applied at small areas that possess complex land cover types. In this study, we produce seven 250m spectral bands by fusing two MODIS 250m bands into five 500m bands. In order to recommend the best fusion method by which one acquires MODIS data, we compare seven fusion methods including the Brovey transform, principle components algorithm (PCA) fusion method, the Gram-Schmidt fusion method, the least mean and variance matching method, the least square fusion method, the discrete wavelet fusion method, and the wavelet-PCA fusion method. Results of the above fusion methods are compared using various evaluation indicators such as correlation, relative difference of mean, relative variation, deviation index, peak signal-to-noise ratio index and universal image quality index, as well as visual interpretation method. Among various fusion methods, the local mean and variance matching method provides the best fusion result for the visual interpretation and the evaluation indicators. The fusion algorithm of 250m MODIS data may be used to effectively improve the accuracy of various MODIS land products.
