  • In this study, it was investigated that characteristic of crack-self-healing of hot-pressed SiC. SiC ceramics was sintered with $Al_2O_3$ and $Y_2O_3$ sintering additive by hot press. Sintering was performed in hot-press furnace in flowing argon (Ar), holding for 3 hr under $1950^{\circ}C$ and 50 MPa. The sintered SiC was machined into 3-point bending strength specimen of $3{\times}4{\times}40mm$, and introduced pre-crack by Vickers indentation at 49.6 N. Specimens were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), 3-point bending strength after heat treatment at $1200{\sim}1400^{\circ}C$ for 1~10 hr. The best crack-self-healing ability was achieved 770 MPa 3-point bending strength by heat treatment at $1300^{\circ}C$ for 5 hr.

  • PURPOSE. To characterize the microstructure of three yttria partially stabilized zirconia ceramics and to compare their hardness, indentation fracture resistance (IFR), biaxial flexural strength (BFS), and fatigue flexural strength. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Disc-shaped specimens were obtained from 3Y-TZP (Vita YZ HT), 4Y-PSZ (Vita YZ ST) and 5Y-PSZ (Vita YZ XT), following the ISO 6872/2015 guidelines for BFS testing (final dimensions of 12 mm in diameter, 0.7 and 1.2 ± 0.1 mm in thicknesses). Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses were performed, and mechanical properties were assessed by Vickers hardness, IFR, quasi-static BFS and fatigue tests. RESULTS. All ceramics showed similar chemical compositions, but mainly differed in the amount of yttria, which was higher as the amount of cubic phase in the diffractogram (5Y-PSZ > 4Y-PSZ > 3Y-TZP). The 4Y- and 5Y-PSZ specimens showed surface defects under SEM, while 3Y-TZP exhibited greater grain uniformity on the surface. 5Y-PSZ and 3Y-TZP presented the highest hardness values, while 3Y-TZP was higher than 4Y- and 5Y-PSZ with regard to the IFR. The 5Y-PSZ specimen (0.7 and 1.2 mm) showed the worst mechanical performance (fatigue BFS and cycles until failure), while 3Y-TZP and 4Y-PSZ presented statistically similar values, higher than 5Y-PSZ for both thicknesses (0.7 and 1.2 mm). Moreover, 3Y-TZP showed the highest (1.2 mm group) and the lowest (0.7 mm group) degradation percentage, and 5Y-PSZ had higher strength degradation than 4Y-PSZ group. CONCLUSION. Despite the microstructural differences, 4Y-PSZ and 3Y-TZP had similar fatigue behavior regardless of thickness. 5Y-PSZ had the lowest mechanical performance.

  • For the resistance spot welds of CR1180 and GA1180 TRIP steels, the weld quality evaluation method using the digitalized X-ray transmission imaging apparatus was investigated in comparison with the crosssectional examination method. In the case of the resistance spot welding of CR1180, three circular regions, such as WZ(white zone), GZ(grey zone) and DZ(dark zone), appeared on X-ray image and they corresponded to the diameters of indentation mark, nugget and corona bond, respectively. The variation of X-ray transmission thickness due to the thickness variation of the weld seemed to be mainly responsible for the formation of those contrasts. The X-ray image contrast formed from the variation of transmission thickness at the outer border line of DZ could also enable the inspections of the notch shape, nonuniformity of the welding pressure and spatter from its sharpness, concentricity and the normal straight line, respectively. The X-ray image of the resistance spot weld of galvannealed GA1180 TRIP steel was very similar to that of CR1180 TRIP steel except the crown shaped outer border line of DZ which was considered to be due to the melting behavior of zinc having the boiling temperature even lower than the melting temperature of steel.

  • AA7010 is an Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy containing Zr, developed as an alternate to traditional AA7075 alloy owing to their high strength combined with better fracture toughness. It is necessary to improve the corrosion resistance and surface properties of the alloy by incorporating plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) method. AA7010-T7452 aluminum alloy has been processed through the forging route with multi-stage working operations, and was coated with $10{\mu}m$ thick $Al_2O_3$ ceramic aluminina coating using the plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) method. The corrosion, stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and nano-mechanical behaviours were examined by means of potentiodynamic polarization, slow strain rate test (SSRT) and nano-indentation tests. The results indicated that the additional thermomechanical treatment during the forging process caused a fully recrystallized microstructure, which lead to the poor environmental cracking resistance of the alloy in 3.5% NaCl solution, despite the overaging treatment. Although the fabricated PEO coating improved general corrosion resistance, the brittle nature of the coating did not provide any improvement in SCC resistance of the alloy. However, the hardness and elastic modulus of the coating were significantly higher than the base alloy.

  • The microstructural features and mechanical behavior of directionally solidified $(Y_2O_3)ZrO_2/Al_2O_3$ eutectic fibers after extended beat treatment in oxidizing environment were investigated. The fiber was grown continuously by an Edge-defined Film-fed Growth (EFG) technique. The microstructure was characterized using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM). The microstructure of the fiber in the as-fabricated state consists of highly oriented colonv and fine lamellar microstructure along the fiber axis. Tensile strength of the $(Y_2O_3)ZrO_2/Al_2O_3$ eutectic fiber remained unchanged with heat treatment at temperatures between $1200^{\circ}C$ and $1500^{\circ}C$ up to 300h. The weibulls modulus remained fairly constant after extended thermal exposure. The fracture toughness and crack propagation behavior were investigated. The fracture toughness ($K_{1C}$) of the $(Y_2O_3)ZrO_2/Al_2O_3$ eutectic fiber in the as-fabricated state were measured to be 3.6 ${\pm}$ 0.5 MPa${\cdot}m^{1/2}$ by an indentation technique and 2.2 ${\pm}$ 0.2 MPa${\cdot}m^{1/2}$ by assuming elliptical flaw of a semi-infinite solid, respectively. The $(Y_2O_3)ZrO_2/Al_2O_3$ eutectic fiber showed a radial (Palmqvist) crack type and exhibited an orthotropic crack growth behavior under 100 g load.

  • This paper was the research of high voltage suspension insulator (400 [kN]) including pottery stone, feldspar, clay and alumina of 17 [wt%]. The slurry was fabricated after ball milling mixed raw materials. Green compacts were made by the extrusion of jiggering method and were sintered at 1300[$^{\circ}C$] for 50 [min.] in the tunnel kiln. The sintered density was reached to 97% of theoretical density, and the bending strength was 1658 [k $g_{f}$/$\textrm{cm}^2$] and hardness and fracture toughness which was measured by ICL( indentation crack length ) method were 1658 (kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$) and 27.5 [Gpa], respectively. In measurement of tana and insulation break voltage of 400 (kN) porcelain, tan$\delta$ took some numerical value between 17${\times}$10$_{-3}$ and 61${\times}$10$_{-3}$ and insulation break voltage value was 19.9$\pm$1.4 [㎸/mm]. The test was performed to research whether the shape of pin affect a overvoltage break load or not As a consequence, when a pin was designed a pin diameter 51 [mm] with the bottom form of two-step constructed with straight in the suspension insulator, Insulator showed overvoltage break load 52 [ton] of the highest value and reflected a fine characteristic in aged deterioration test which is one of the accelerated aging test. Also it could be confirmed a fine characteristic through performing the test that electrical property of insulator was established correctly in accordance with IEC 60383-1 standards.s.

  • To analyze several defects and residual stress in sintering of layer structure materials, multiayer materials with TZP/SUS and ZT/SUS, and bilayer materials with porcelain/alumina and porcelain/Y-TZP were fabricated by sintering method. Multilayer materials prepared by pressureless sintering show the sintering defect such as warping, splitting, cracking originated from the difference of sintering shrinkage between each layer, which could be controlled by the adjustment of number and thickness in interlayer. In tape casting, a certain pressure given during sintering relaxed the sintering defects, specially warping. The residual stress in bilayer was examined with Vickers indentation method. A small tensile stress in porcelain/alumina and a large compressive stress in porcelain/Y-TZP were generated on the porcelain interface due to the thermal expansion mismatch, which affected the strength of bilayer materials. As a consequence, the sintering defects of multilayer materials and the residual stresses of bilayer materials were dominantly influenced on material design and starting material constants.

  • Laminated composite plates have shown their superiority over metals in applications requiring high specific strength, high specific modulus, and so on. Therefore, they have used in various industry. However, they have poor resistance to impact compared to typical metal materials. So, many researchers have investigated about impact behavior of laminated composite plate. To investigate impact behavior of laminated composite plate, we have to calculate contact force between impactor and laminated composite plate at the first. Impactor's equation of motion, plate's equation of motion and correlations for indentation were solved to know the contact force at the same time. In this study, low velocity impact behavior of composite plate was investigated using the finite element program which is involved the classical Hertzian law, Sun's law and Sun & Yang's experimental law and Sun & Tan's experimental law considering the stacking method.

  • Encapsulant curing in terms of convection oven leads to thermal induced stress due to nonuniform thermal conductivity in LED package. We have adopted infrared (IR) light for silicone curing in order to release the stress. The light uniformity irradiated on an encapsulant surface is confirmed to be uniform by optical simulation. Shear strength of die paste using IR compared to convection oven is increased 19.2% at the same curing time, which indicates curing time can be shortened. The indentation depth difference between center and edge of silicone encapsulant in terms of convection oven and IR are 14.8% and 3.4%, respectively. Curing by IR also shows 2.3% better radiant flux persistency rate of LED at $85^{\circ}C$ after 1,000 h reliability test compared to convection curing.
