When ships and offshore plants are flooded or the floating crane is equipped with a heavy object, these floating structures are excessively inclined. In this case, immersion, heel, and trim affecting the hydrostatic restoration performance are very large and are coupled each other. In this paper, in order to calculate a static equilibrium position of floating structures with excessive inclination, the nonlinear governing equations were constructed by sequential linearization. In the governing equation, the immersion, heel, and trim are fully coupled, and the equations are represented using a plane area, a primary moment, and a moment of inertia of the water plane area. Therefore, it is possible to calculate the additional factor related the water plane area for estimating stability. Position and orientation of the floating structure are obtained by iterative calculation. The calculated results are compared with the previous studies in the aspect to the performance and the accuracy.
A through-railway bridge with an inclined girder has recently been applied to optimize the cross-section of a slender bridge structure in railway bridges. To achieve the additional cross-section optimization effect by the bolted end-plate connection, it is necessary to investigate the application of the bolted end-plate tension connection between the inclined girder and the crossbeam. This basic study was conducted on the application of the bolted end-plate moment connection of crossbeams to half-through girders with inclined webs. The combined behavior of vertical deflection and rotational behavior was observed due to the effect of the web inclination in the inclined girder where the steel crossbeam was connected to the girder by the bolted end-plate moment connection. Therefore, in the experiment, the deflection of the inclined girder was 1.77-2.93 times greater than that of the vertical girder but the lateral deflection of the inclined girder was 0.4 times less than that of the vertical girder. Moreover, the tensile stress of the upper bolts in the inclined girder with low crossbeams was clearly 0.81 times lower than that of the vertical girder. According to the results, the design formula for vertical girders does not reflect the influence of the web inclination. Therefore, this study proposed the design procedures for the inclined girder to apply the bolted end-plate moment connection of the crossbeam to the inclined girder by reflecting the design change factors according to the effect of the web inclination.
In this study, we evaluate the anisotropic flow of droplets according to the directionality of asperities. We manufacture a mold with an inclined hole by adjusting the jig angle using a high-power diode laser. Using the manufactured mold, we prepare specimens for wettability studies by the micro molding technique. We fabricate twelve kinds of surfaces with micro-asperities inclined at 0°, 15°, 30°, and 45° for asperity pitches of 100 ㎛, 200 ㎛, and 300 ㎛. We evaluate the static and dynamic behaviors of the droplets as a function of the asperities pitch and inclination angles. The anisotropic effect increases as the pitch increases between asperities, and the anisotropic flow characteristics increase as the inclination angle of the asperities increases. On the surface with hole pitches of 100 ㎛ and 200 ㎛, the contact angle of the droplet shows high hydrophobicity at approximately 160°, but on the surface with the 300-㎛ hole pitch, the contact angle is approximately 110°, indicating that the hydrophobic effect rapidly reduces. Additionally, when the inclination angle of the asperities is approximately 30°, the left and right contact angle deviations of the droplet are the lowest, showing that the roll-off angle is relatively low.
Flexible structures have been adopted in heat transfer systems as vortex generators. The flexible vortex generators immersed in a flow show a self-sustained oscillatory motion, which enhances fluid mixing and heat transfer. In the present study, the vortex generators in a two-dimensional channel flow are numerically investigated, and they are symmetrically mounted on the upper and lower walls with an inclination angle. The momentum interaction and heat transfer between the flexible vortex generators and the surrounding fluid are considered by using an immersed boundary method. The inclination angle is one of the important factors in determining the flapping kinematics of the flexible vortex generators. The flapping amplitude increases as the inclination angle increases, thereby enhancing fluid mixing. The heat transfer is enhanced up to 80% comparing to the baseline channel flow.

This paper examines the flow characteristics around an inclined prism with a U-shaped cross-section ("U-profile") and investigates the connection between the flow and flow-induced vibrations. The study employs a combined approach that involves wind tunnel experiments and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) using an unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) turbulence model. Distinct vortex formation patterns are observed in the flow field surrounding the stationary inclined profile. When the cavity of the profile faces away from the incoming flow, large vortices develop behind the profile. Conversely, when the cavity is oriented towards the oncoming flow, these vortices form within the cavity. Notably, due to the slow movement of these large vortices through the cavity, the frequency at which vortices are shed in the negative inclination case is lower compared to the positive inclination, where they form in the wake. Wind tunnel experiments reveal an intermittent transition between the two vortex formation patterns at zero inclination. Large vortices sporadically emerge both in the cavity and behind the profile. The simulation results demonstrate that when these large vortices occur at a frequency close to the structure's natural frequency, they induce prominent pitch vibrations. This phenomenon is also sought after and presented in coupled vibration experiments. Additionally, the simulations indicate that when the natural frequency of the structure is considerably lower than the vortex shedding frequency, this type of vibration can be observed.
This research was carried out in order to study the effects of Rapid Maxillary Expansion on maxilla and it's surrounding skeletal structures. The sample for this study consists of 14 patients who were in retention period after rapid maxillary expansion. Following results were obtained after performing comparative analysis of cephalograms taken before and after rapid maxillary expansion. 1. In almost every cases, inferior displacement of palatal planes with concurrent changes in their inclination were observed. 2. Changes in the inclination of palatal plane can be categorized into inferiorty inclined group, superiorly inclined group and constant group in relation to the states before rapid masillary expansion. 3. Decrease in < Se-FMN/PMV and increase in < Se-FMN-A were evident in the superiorly inclined group and vice versa for the inferiorly inclined group.
We present our N-body simulation study on the disk galaxy warp formation via close encounters. Using a publicly available code Gadget2, we investigate morphological and kinematical structures of disk galaxies while the galaxies are undergoing fly-by encounters with adjacent dark matter halos. In this study, we find that warps can be excited by impulsive encounters and sustained for a few billion years. Most of the warps from the simulation show inclination angles that are comparable to the observations. The creation of warps, their inclination and their lifetimes are governed primarily by the following three parameters: the impact parameter (the minimum distance between two halos), the mass ratio between two galaxies, and the incoming angle of the intruder. We discuss pros and cons about our alternative scenario in comparison with existing explanations.
The initiation of toppling is explored for a uniform stack of blocks that rotates slowly about its mid-base. As the stack passes through its vertical position ($\theta$=0), it is in free-fall rotation, and a critical inclination angle ${\theta}_c$ is reached at which the toppling stack "fails" or begins to crack or separate. For tall stacks (high aspect ratios), two modes of failure are hypothesized, for which the dynamic failure analyses are shown to correlate with experimental results. These block failure modes are similar to those observed for tall, toppling masonry structures with weak binding material between their brick or stone blocks.
Currently, the construction trend of high-rise structures is changing from a cube-shaped box to a free-form. In the case of free-form structures, it is difficult to predict the behavior of the structure because it induces torsional deformation due to inclined columns and the eccentricity of the structure by the horizontal load. For this reason, it is essential to review the stability by considering the design variables at the design stage. In this paper, the position of the weak vertical member was analyzed by analyzing the behavior of the structure according to the change in the core position of the twisted high-rise structures. In the case of the shear wall, the shear force was found to be high in the order of proximity to the center of gravity of each floor of the structure. In the case of the column, the component force was generated by the axial force of the outermost beam, so the bending moment was concentrated on the inner column with no inclination.
