This paper documents the development of a fuzzy logic based incident detection model for urban diamond interchanges. Research in incident detection for intersections and arterials is at a very initial stage. Existing algorithms are still far from being robust in dealing with the difficulties related with data availability and the multi-dimensional nature of the incident detection problem. The purpose of this study is to develop a new real-time incident detection model for urban diamond interchanges. The development of the algorithm is based on fuzzy logic. The incident detection model developed through this research is capable of detecting lane¬blocking incidents when their effects are manifested by certain patterns of deterioration in traffic conditions and, thereby, adjustments in signal control strategies are required. The model overcomes the boundary condition problem inherent in conventional threshold-based concepts. The model captures system-wide incident effects utilizing multiple measures for more accurate and reliable detection, and serves as a component module of a real-time traffic adaptive diamond interchange control system. The model is designed to be readily scalable and expandable for larger systems of arterial streets. The prototype incident detection model was applied to an actual diamond interchange to investigate its performance. A simulation study was performed to evaluate the model's performance in terms of detection rate, false alarm rate, and mean time to detect. The model's performance was encouraging, and the fuzzy logic based approach to incident detection is promising.

Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) technology have enabled the integration of AI technology into image sensors, such as Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV), to detect specific traffic incidents. However, most incident detection methods have been carried out using fixed equipment. Therefore, there have been limitations to incident detection for all roadways. Nevertheless, the development of mobile image collection and analysis technology, such as image sensors and edge-computing, is spreading. The purpose of this study is to estimate the reducing effect of the incident detection time according to the introduction level of mobile image collection and analysis equipment (or connected vehicles). To carry out this purpose, we utilized data on the number of incidents collected by the Suwon branch of the Gyeongbu expressway in 2021. The analysis results showed that if the market penetration rate (MPR) of connected vehicles is 4% or higher for two-lane expressway and 3% or higher for three-lane expressways, the incident detection time was less than one minute. Furthermore, if the MPR is 0.4% or higher for two-lane expressways and 0.2% or higher for three-lane expressways, the incident detection time decreased compared to the average incident detection time announced by the Korea Expressway Corporation for both two-lane and three-lane expressways.
This study presents a detection method for mechanically fabricated defects on underwater steel pipes, using ultrasonic guided waves. Three different diameters (60, 90, and 114 mm) of 1000-mm long steel pipes were considered, along with several experimental design factors such as incident angles, incident distances, and the degrees of defects, to investigate how these factors affected the experimental results - the detectability of the mechanical defects. From the experimental results, we determined that the amplitude and arrival time of the first received wave signals gave a promising clue for distinguishing the existence of the defects and their severities. Between the amplitude and arrival time, the arrival time gave a more promising indication since it was affected by the experimental factors in a constant manner. Therefore, it was shown that the use of ultrasonic guided waves for underwater pipe inspection is feasible.
Research of this paper focused on developing and demonstrating of algorithm with the figures of difference between historical traffic pattern data and real-time traffic data to decide on what the incident is. The aim of this dissertation is to develop incident detection algorithm which can be understood and modified easier to operate. To establish traffic pattern of this algorithm, weighted moving average method was applied. The basis of this method was traffic volume and speed of the same day and time at the same location based on 30-second raw data. The model was completed by a serious of steps of process-screening process of error data, decision of the traffic condition, comparison with pattern data, decision of incident circumstances, continuity test. A variety of parameter value was applied to select reasonable parameter. Results of application of the algorithm came out with figures of average detection rate 94.7 percent, 0.8 percent rate of misinformation and the average detection time 1.6 minutes. With these following results, the detection rate turned out to be superior compared with result of existing model. Applying the concept of traffic patterns was useful to gain excellent results of this study. Also, this study is significant in terms of making algorithm which theorized the decision process of actual operators.

In this study, a new method which can detect incidents in interrupted traffic flow was suggested. The applied method of detecting the incident is the Latin Square Analysis Method by using traffic traits. In the Latin Square Analysis, unlike other previously tried methods, the traffic situation was analyzed, this time considering the changes in traffic traits for each lane and for each time period. The data used in this study were the data observed in the actual field with fine weather. The traffic volumes, the vehicle speed and the occupancy rate were collected on the interrupted flow road. The data were collected in normal and incident situations. The incidents occurred on the second lane, the time of persistent incidents was set to 10 minutes. The Latin Square Analyses were performed using the collected data with the traffic volume, with the vehicle speed or with the occupancy rate. As a result in this study, in case of detecting the traffic situations with Latin Square Analysis, it will be more successful to apply traffic volume to detect the traffic situations than to apply other factors.

The advanced traffic management system of intelligent transport systems automates the related traffic tasks such as vehicle speed, traffic volume and traffic incidents through the improved infrastructures like high definition cameras, high-performance radar sensors. For the safety of road users, especially, the automated incident detection and secondary accident prevention system is required. Normally, CCTV based image object detection and radar based object detection is used in this system. In this paper, we proposed the algorithm for real time highway incident detection system using multi surveillance cameras to mosaic video and track accurately the moving object that taken from different angles by background modeling. We confirmed through experiments that the video detection can supplement the short-range shaded area and the long-range detection limit of radar. In addition, the video detection has better classification features in daytime detection excluding the bad weather condition.

Our country has so large mountain area that the tunnel construction is inevitable and the need of incident detection that provides safe management of tunnels is increasing. In this paper, we suggest a tunnel incident detection system using computer vision techniques, which can detect the incidents in a tunnel and provides the information to the tunnel administrative office in order to help safe tunnel operation. The suggested system enhances the processing speed by using simple processing algorithm such as image subtraction, and ensures the accuracy of the system by focused on the incident detection itself rather than its classification. The system is also cost effective because the video data from 4 cameras can be simultaneously analyzed in a single PC-based system. Our system can be easily extended because the PC-based analyzer can be increased according to the number of cameras in a tunnel. Also our web-based structure is useful to connect the other remotely located tunnel incident systems to obtain interoperability between tunnels. Through the experiments the system has successfully detected the incidents in real time including dropped luggage, stoped car, traffic congestion, man walker or bicycle, smoke or fire, reverse driving, etc.
The term "incident duration time" is defined as the time from the occurrence of incident to the completion of the handling process. Reductions in incident durations minimize damages by traffic accidents. This study aims to develop models to identify factors that influence incident duration by investigating traffic accidents on highways. For this purpose, four models were established including an integrated model (Model 1) incorporating all accident data and detailed models (Model 2, 3 and 4) analyzing accidents by location such as basic section, bridges and tunnels. The result suggested that the location of incident influences incident duration and the time of arrival of accident treatment vehicles is the most sensitive factor. Also, significant implications were identified with regard to vehicle to vehicle accidents and accidents by trucks, in night or in weekends. It is expected that the result of this study can be used as important information to develop future policies to manage traffic accidents.

The current VIPS are not effective in safety point of view, because they are originally developed for mimicking loop detectors. Therefore, it is important to identify vehicle trajectories in real time, because recognizing vehicle movements over a detection zone enables to identify which situations are hazardous, and what causes them to be hazardous. In order to improve limited safety functions of the current VIPS, this research has developed a computer vision system of monitoring individual vehicle trajectories based on image processing, and offer the detailed information, for example, incident detection and conflict as well as traffic information via tracking image detectors. This system is capable of recognizing individual vehicle maneuvers and increasing the effectiveness of various traffic situations. Experiments were conducted for measuring the cases of incident detection and abnormal vehicle trajectory with rapid lane change.
In this paper, we proposed image processing technique for automatic real time fire and smoke detection in tunnel environment. To avoid the large scale of damage of fire occurred in the tunnel, it is necessary to have a system to minimize and to discover the incident as fast as possible. The fire and smoke detection is different from the forest fire detection as there are elements such as car and tunnel lights and others that are different from the forest environment so that an indigenous algorithm has to be developed. The two algorithms proposed in this paper, are able to detect the exact position, at the earlier stage of incident.
