Flow condensation heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) of R22 and R134a were measured on a horizontal 9 hole aluminum multi-channel tube. The main test section in the refrigerant loop was made of a flat multi-channel aluminum tube of 1.4 mm hydraulic diameter and 0.53 m length. Refrigerant was cooled by passing cold water through an annulus surrounding the test section. Data were obtained in the vapor qualities of 0.1∼0.9 at mass flux of 200∼400 kg/$m^2$s and heat flux of 7.3∼7.7 ㎾/$m^2$ at the saturation temperature of 4$0^{\circ}C$. All popular correlations in single-phase subcooled liquid and flow condensation originally developed for large single tubes predicted the present data of the flat tube within 20% deviation when effective heat transfer area is used in determining experimental data. This suggests that there is little change in flow characteristics and patterns when the tube diameter is reduced down to 1.4 mm diameter range. Thermal insulation for the outer tube section surrounding the test tube for the transport of heat transfer fluid is very important in fluid heat-ing or cooling type heat transfer experimental apparatus.

Experiments on the condensation heat transfer characteristics inside a smooth and a microfin tube with R410A/R22 are performed in this study. The test tubes 7/9.52 mm in outside diameters and 3m in length are used. Varying the mass flux of the refrigerant and the condensation temperatures, the average heat transfer coefficients and pressure drop are investigated. Most flows in this study are in the annular and/or wavy flow regime. It is shown that the heat transfer is enhanced and the pressure drops are larger in the microfin tube than the smooth tube. From the heat transfer enhancement coefficients and the pressure drops, it is found that the high heat transfer enhancement factors are obtained in the range of small mass flux while the penalty factors are almost equal. Experiments results show that average heat transfer coefficients of R410A is larger than that of R22 and pressure drop of R410A is less than R22.

This work studies for boiling and condensation heat transfer performance of trapezoidally shaped integral-fin tubes having fin densities from 748fpm to 1654fpm. For comparison, tests are made using a plain tube having the same inside and outside diameter as that of the root of fins of finned tubes. Hahne's theoretical model and Webb's theoretical model are used to predict the R-11 boiling heat transfer coefficient and condensing heat transfer coefficient respectively for plain tube and all integral-fin tubes. Experiments are carried out using R-11 as working fluid. This work is limited to film-wise condensation and pool boiling on the outside surface of plain tube and 4 low integral-fin tubes. In case of condensation, the refrigerant condenses at saturation state of 32$^{\circ}C$ on the outside tube surface cooled by coolant and in case of boiling. the refrigerant evaporates at saturation state of 1bar on the outside tube surface. The amount of non-con-densable gases in the test loop is reduced to a negligible value by repeated purging. The actual boiling and condensing processes occur on the outside tube surfaces. Hence the nature of this surface geometry affects the heat transfer performances of condenser and evaporator in refrigerating system. The condensation heat transfer coefficient of integral-fin tube is enhanced by both extended tube surface area and surface tension. The ratio of the condensation heat transfer coefficients of finned to plain tubes is greater than that of surface area of finned to plain tubes, while ratio of the boiling heat transfer coefficient of finned to plain tubes shows reverse result. As a result, low integral-fin tube can be used in condenser more effectively than used in evaporator.
In this study, the numerical analysis to estimate condensation heat and mass transfer of the condenser was carried out using the PMA (porous medium approach). In the PMA, the details of tube bundle in the condenser are replaced by the porous medium, and the flow resistance term is added in the momentum equation. In this regard, the PMA is quite helpful for the study of tube bundle in the large condenser. The pressure loss through tube bundle can be compensated by viscous and inertial momentum sink terms, which was validated numerically. Value of the pressure drop was compared to that of Butterworth correlation. Three dimensional analysis of condensation for McAllister condenser with the PMA was conducted using Fluent 6.2 and UDFs (use-defined functions). The result of condensation rate was analogous to previous results (experimental and numerical data).

An experimental study was carried out to investigate the condensation performance for the horizontal cylindrical heat transfer tube with various fin attached using R-11 vapor. The heat transfer tube used in this study was supplied by SUNG HYUNG METAL CO., LTD. Four different types of heat transfer tubes (plain tube, SH-CYR tube, thermocor tube and thermoexcel tube) were used. Each tube was surrounded by circular acrylate tube, and R-11 gas heated by boiler flows into the acrylate tube. Cooling water counter-flows in heat transfer tubes. Heat transfer coefficient of the plain tube from measured data was compared with those of three other tubes. The results are summarized as follows: 1. As the cooling water temperature decreased, the liquid film of R-11 turned to droplet drop on the top surface of the horizontal tube. 2. Heat transfer coefficient calculated theoretically was higher than that obtained from the experimental data. 3. As far as the condensation concerns the thermocor tube is the highest, the SH-CYR tube is the second, and the thermoexcel tube is the third excluding the plain tube.

An experimental study on the condensation heat transfer coefficients of R-22, R-290 and R-600a inside horizontal tube was performed. Heat transfer measurements were performed for smooth tube with inside diameter of 10.07 mm and outside diameter of 12.07 mm and inner grooved tube having 75 fins whose height is 0.25 mm. This study was performed for condensation temperatures were from 308 K to 323 K, and mass velocity of $51 kg/m^2s - 250kg/m^2s$. The test results showed that the local condensation heat transfer coefficients increased as the mass flux increased, and also the effect of mass flow rate on heat transfer coefficients of R-290 was less than R-22. In addition, heat transfer coefficient of R-22 increased to a larger extent than R-290 and R-600a as the mass flow rate increased. Average condensation heat transfer coefficients of natural refrigerants were superior to that of R-22. The present results had a good agreement with Cavallini-Zecchin's correlation for smooth and inner grooved tubes.

HFO refrigerants have recently come to be regarded as promising alternatives to R134a for use in turbo chillers. This study provides results from experiments evaluating the film condensation heat transfer characteristics of HFO refrigerants R1234ze(E) and R1233zd(E) on smooth horizontal laboratory tubes. The experiments were conducted at a saturation vapor temperature of $38.0^{\circ}C$ with surface sub-cooling temperatures in the range of $3{\sim}15^{\circ}C$. We observe that the film condensation heat transfer coefficient decreases as surface sub-cooling temperatures increase. In the case of laboratory tubes with a diameter of 19.05 mm, the film condensation heat transfer coefficients of R1234ze(E) and R1233zd(E) were approximately 11% and 20% lower than those of R134a, respectively. Furthermore, our investigation of the effect of tube diameter on film condensation heat transfer coefficients, demonstrates an inverse relationship where the film condensation heat transfer coefficient increases as laboratory tube diameter decreases. We propose experimental correlations of Nusselt number for R1234ze(E) and R1233zd(E), which yield a ${\pm}20%$ error band.

In this study, we made RFC, RCC and NCC according to the method by which polypropylene capillary tube was adopted, and evaluated cooling performance of each system through model experiments. We also investigated an applicability of the combined use of radiant cooling and dehumidification system. The results are as follows: In case of normal cooling load, RFC and RCC maintained set temperature without a condensation. But, in case of peak cooling load, RFC and RCC resulted in the lack of cooling performance and caused a condensation at the radiation surface. Consequently, the only use of polypropylene capillary tube is considered not to be enough for cooling in real application. Using the combination of a dehumidification and radiant cooling system maintained the set temperature without a condensation. NCC kept the set temperature at anytime without a condensation. It is more economic than packaged air-conditioner system due to the cooling effect of the floor surface.

In this study, condensation heat transfer coefficients(HTCs) of a plain tube, low fin tube, and Turbo-C enhanced tube for CFC-11, HCFC-123, CFC-12, HFC-l34a are measured and compared against each other. All data are taken at the vapor temperature of 39$^{\circ}C$ with a wall subcooling temperature 3~8$^{\circ}C$. Test results show that HTCs of a low vapor pressure refrigerant, HFC-123, for a plain, low fin, and Turbo-C tubes are 10.5~20.5%, 8.2~12.2%, 16.5~19.2% lower than those of CFC-11, respectively. On the other hand, HTCs of a medium vapor refrigerant, HFC-l34a, for a plain, low fin, and Turbo-C tubes are 20.6~31.8%, 0.0~8.0%, 13.2~20.9% higher than those of CFC-12, respectively. For all refrigerants tested, HTCs of Turbo-C tube are the highest among the three tubes showing almost 8 times increase in HTCs as compared to those of a plain tube. Nusselt's prediction equation for a plain tube yielded 12% deviation for all plain tube data while Realty and Katz's prediction equation for a low fin tube yielded 20% deviation for all low tube data.

Due to the ozone depletion and global warming potentials, some refrigerants(CFx and HCFCs) have been rapidly substituted. R410A is considered as the alternative refrigerant of R22 for the air-conditioners used a home and in industry. Experiments on the condensation heat transfer characteristics inside a smooth or a micro-fin tube with R410A are performed in this study. The test tubes 7/9.52 mm in outer diameters and 3 m in length are used. Varying the mass flux of the refrigerant and the condensation temperatures, the average heat transfer coefficients and pressure drop are investigated. It is shown that the heat transfer is enhanced and the amount of pressure drops are larger in the microfin tube than the smooth tube. From the heat transfer enhancement coefficient and the pressure penalty factor, it is found that the high heat transfer enhancement coefficients are obtained in the range of small mass flux while the penalty factors are almost equal.
