If an underground research facility for the validation of disposal concept is constructed in KAERI, it is expected to have a thick weathered zone and varying surface topology. In this study, the influence of different geological conditions, tunnel slope, tunnel size, and sequential excavation is investigated by 3D mechanical analysis using FLAC3D. Around the tunnel, it is not expected to develop any plastic zone and the maximum stress might be as high as 5 ㎫. The maximum compressive stress will be developed at about 20 m to e dead end of the tunnel. There is no difference on stress and displacement distributions between the cases with and without sequential excavation. It is expected to have stress release in the roof and floor after the excavation of the tunnel. There is no significant influence of weathered zone size, tunnel size, and tunnel slope on the stress and displacement distributions. The modeling for the intersection shows the minimum factor of safety is above 3, when the in situ stress ratio K is 3. From the study, it was possible to demonstrate that the small scale disposal research tunnel in KAERI will be mechanically stable.
The effects of consolidation stress history including consolidation stress ratio, OCR and cyclic loading with drainage on the undrained shear strength of cohesive soil were investig toted. The ratio$(S_u/\sigma'_{vc})ckou/(S_U/\sigma_{vc})cuv$ was observed to increase with increasing OCR. The equation (1) in this paper by Mayne(1980) for the undrained shear strength of the overconsolidated clay and the equation (4) by Yasuhara(1994), for the postcyclic shear strength were found to be relatively well applicable in the case of Kofonsolidated. It was also suggested that the value of the critical state pore pressure parameter As in these two equations for the in situ shear strength of lightly overconsolidated clay(OCR< 3) be obtained by the standard consolidating test.
An optimal hydraulic section is critical for irrigated water conservancy in seasonal frozen ground due to a large proportion of water leakage, as investigated by in-situ surveys. This is highly correlated with the frost heave of underlain soils in cold season. This paper firstly derived a practical model for frost heave of clayey soils, with temperature dependent thermal indexes incorporating phase change effect. A model test carried out on clay was used to verify the rationality of the model. A novel approach for optimizing the cross-section of irrigation canals in cold regions was suggested with live updated geometry characterized by three unique geometric constraints including slope of canal, ratio of practical flow section to the optimal and lining thickness. Allowable frost heave deformation and tensile stress in canal lining are utilized as standard in computation iterating with geometry updating while the construction cost per unit length is regarded as the eventual target in optimization. A typical section along the Jinghui irrigation canal was selected to be optimized with the above requirements satisfied. Results prove that the optimized hydraulic section exhibits smaller frost heave deformation, lower tensile stress and lower construction cost.
A simple method has been developed to detect the bonding condition of active fiber composites (AFC) adhered to the surface of a host structure. Large deformation actuating capability is one of important features of AFC. Edge delamination in adhesive layer due to large interfacial shear stress at the free edge is typically resulted from axial strain mismatch between bonded materials. AFC patch possesses very good flexibility and toughness. When an AFC patch is partially delaminated from host structure, there remains sensing capability in the debonded part. The debonding size can be determined through axial resonance measured by the interdigitated electrodes symmetrically aligned on opposite surfaces of the patch. The electrical impedance and modal response of the AFC patch in part adhered to an aluminum plate were investigated in a broad frequency range. Debonding ratio of the AFC patch is in inverse proportion to the resonant frequency of the fundamental mode. Feasibility of in-situ detecting the progressive delamination between AFC patch and host plate is demonstrated.
Laboratory creep experiments show that compaction of unconsolidated shale is an irrecoverable process caused by viscous time-dependent deformation. Using Perzyna's viscoplasticity framework combined with the modified Cam-clay theory, we found the constitutive equation expressed in the form of strain rate as a power law function of the ratio between the sizes of dynamic and static yield surfaces. We derived the volumetric creep strain at a constant hydrostatic pressure level as a logarithmic function of time, which is in good agreement with experimental results. The determined material constants indicate that the yield stress of the shale increases by 6% as strain rate rises by an order of magnitude. This demonstrates that the laboratory-based prediction of yield stress (and porosity) may result in a significant error in estimating the properties in situ.
We must notice ground movement by excavation for reasonable tunnel designs. The convergence confinement method is an attempt to evaluate tunnel stability conditions by means of a mathematical model and a ground response curve. In this study, the convergence confinement method by numerical model was examined. This method don't need the basic assumptions for a mathematical model of circular tunnel shape, and hydrostatic in situ stress. Also modified ground response curve that is calculated after installing the support, is suggested, which informs us the ground movement mechanism. The ground response curve and the support reaction curve are mutually dependent. Especially the support reaction curve depends upon the ground response curve. The mechanism of tunnel must be analyzed by the interaction between support and ground. Consequently the stability of tunnel must be qualitatively investigated by a ground response curve and quantitatively adjudged by a numerical analysis for the reasonable design of tunnel.
In this study, wish to analyze effect that affect on each tunnel (right and left tunnel) according as proceeding of leading tunnel (right tunnel), following tunnel (left tunnel) and pilot tunnel excavation through behavior of tunnel and surrounding base by model tests. And stress-transfer mechanism that occurs from in-situ loosing area and arching effect by difference of stiffness ratio and overburden heights were verified experimentally. The model tests were carried out by varying the stiffness of reinforced area and overburden height, measured deformation of tunnel and displacement of surrounding base. The model tests followed exactly the real 2-Arch tunnel construction stages.

An Excavation Damaged Zone (EDZ), in which rock properties are permanently changed due to blasting impact or stress redistribution, can influence the behavior and stability of structures. In this study, the mechanical stability of an underground opening was simulated by using FLAC, which is a two-dimensional modeling code, with a consideration of EDZ. A sensitivity analysis was also carried out with fractional factorial design. From the modeling, it was found that the behavior and the stability of an underground tunnel are strongly dependent on the existence of the EDZ. The sensitivity analysis showed that the key parameters affecting the factor of safety around the tunnel are in-situ stress ratio, depth, cohesion, reduction ratio, internal friction angle, and height and width of the tunnel. It is necessary to consider the EDZ, which can significantly affect mechanical stability in tunnel design.
The Undrained creep tests on the normally consolidated clays with four different consolication ratios(c3c'/clc': 1.0, 0.7, 0.5, 0.4) were performed to investigate the effects of avisotropic consolidation on the undrained creep rupture behavior. The elapsed time to a certain minimum strain rate is decreased with decreasing the value of the consolidation pressure ratio, and the elapsed time to rupture for a certain minimum strain rate is also decreased with decreasing the ratio. The upper yield strength obtained from the equation suggested by Finn and Shead(1.) is coincided well with the creep strength irrespective of the magnitude of the consolidation pressure ratio, and the normallised upper yielding strength by mean confining pressure is decreased with increasing the consolidation pressure ratio. The critical strain for creep rupture, the strain at min. strain rate, is constant irrespective of the magnitude of creep stress, but it increased exponentially with increasing the ratio, It accordingly is dangerous that the potential of in-situ creep rupture is estimated only by the creep rupture test on the isotropically consolidated clay in case of K0-value below 1.0.
In rock mass subject to high in-situ stresses, the failure process of rock is dominated by the stress-induced fractures growing parallel to the excavation boundary. When the ratio of in situ stresses compared to rock strength is greater than a certain value, progressive brittle failure which is characterized by popping and spatting of rock debris occurs due to stress concentration. Traditional constitutive model like Mohr-Coulomb usually assume that the normal stress dependent frictional strength component and the cohesion strength component are constant, therefore modelling progressive brittle failure will be very difficult. In this study, a series of numerical analyses were conducted for surrounding rock mass near crude oil storage cavern using CW-FS model which was known to be efficient for modelling brittle failure and the results were compared with those of linear Mohr-Coulomb model. Further analyses were performed by varying plastic shear strain limits on cohesion and internal friction angle to find the proper values which yield the matching result with the observed failure in the oil storage caverns. The obtained results showed that CW-FS model could be a proper method to characterize essential behavior of progressive brittle failure in competent rock mass.
