  • The objective of this research was to find a direct and indirect method to estimate land surface temperature (LST) efficiently, using Landsat images and in-situ measurement. Agricultural fields including paddy fields have long been known to have multi-functions beneficial to the environment and ecology of the urban surrounding areas. Among these functions, the ambient temperature cooling (ATC) effect are widely acknowledged. However, quantitative and regional assessment of such effect has not had many investigations. Thermal remote sensing has been used over urban areas to assess ATC effect, to perform land cover classifications and as input for models of urban surface atmosphere exchange. Here, we review the use of thermal remote sensing in the study of paddy fields and urban climates, focusing primarily on the ATC effect. Landsat satellite images were used to determine the surface temperatures of different land cover types of a $441km^2$ study area in Cheongju, Korea. The results show that the ATC are a function of paddy area percentage in Landsat pixels. Pixels with higher paddy area percentage have more significant cooling effect.

  • The first sounding rocket in Korea, KSR-4205 has been under the development at Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI), and is expected to be launched in 1993 to measure the vertical ozone profile over the Korean Peninsula. The KSR-4205 is expected to provide the first in situ meastulement of ozone concentrations over the Korean Peninsula. An optical ozone detector has been developed at Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS), and its calibration has been completed recently. Also, sun-sensor has been developed for measurement of the angle between the sun and the KSR-4205. In this paper, measurement principles of the ozone detector in KSR-4205, its calibration data, ozone measurement procedure and data reduction algoriHun are presented with sample calculations.

  • Because of impact on the underwater light field, CDOM can influence the accuracy of global satellite-based measurement of ocean chlorophyll and primary productivity. So we investigated the distribution and seasonal variation of CDOM in the East Sea during summer 2009 and 2011. Among them we report two distinctively different summer cases between 2009 and 2011 year, in which showed the different main sources for CDOM. Regulating factors and sources of CDOM in the East Sea were examined. Comparison between in situ and satellite derived Chl a and CDOM were made to find an influence of CDOM on measurement of satellite derived Chl a. Similar pattern and matching of MODIS Chl a with in situ Chl a 2009 was comparable, but significant discrepancy between MODIS Chl a and in situ Chl a was found, when CDOM was high in summer of 2011. GOCI data showed better matching with in situ data for both Chl a and CDOM, compared to MODIS data in summer of 2011. The presence of high CDOM at the surface layer supplied by vertical mixing seems to affect on the overestimation of Chl a by satellite data.

  • Environmental noise at high intensities directly affects human health by causing hearing loss. Although scientific evidence currently is not conclusive, noise is suspected of causing or aggravating other diseases. Environmental noise indirectly affects human welfare by interfering with sleep, thought, and conversation. Noise emission from motorized vehicle includes power unit noise, tire/pavement noise and aerodynamic noise. Among them, tire/pavement noise is noise emission from interaction of the tire and road surface when the vehicle cruises over the surface of pavement. In general, portland cement concrete(PCC) pavement is known to create more noise than asphaltic surfaces though it has the advantage of durability and superior surface friction. However, the results of preliminary laboratory test showed exposed aggregate concrete(EAC) has and effect on reducing tire/pavement noise. Based on the laboratory test. pilot construction of exposed aggregate concrete pavement was completed and series of in-situ measurements were conducted for noise analysis including the pass-by noise measurement and the close-proximity method. Conclusively, it is expected that tire/pavement noise represent significant portion of noise levels at higher frequencies and it would be reduced on special textures of pavement such as exposed aggregate concrete.

  • It is difficult to determine the strength and the permeability of a soil levee quantitatively because the damages of a levee have been evaluated only by visual inspection in Korea. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a simplified measurement device for measuring the strength and permeability of a levee. In this paper, a new in-situ permeability measuring device which can measure strength and permeability based on GWP is developed and its applicability to the field permeability test of a soil levee is introduced. From the laboratory and in-situ experiments, the new measuring device has the potential of measuring the soil permeability simply and accurately.

  • Space- and time-resolved in-situ optical and fluorescence microspectroscopy techniques have been applied to investigate the coke formation during aromatization of C5 paraffin and olefin over H-ZSM-5 crystal. In-situ UV/vis absorption measurement offers space- and time-resolved information for the coke formation. Different coking trends have been observed with respect to the location of a crystal as well as the reactant types. From in-situ confocal fluorescence microspectroscopy study, it is revealed that the concentration of certain species photo-excited at 488 nm becomes high at the central region, whereas the compounds emitting fluorescence by 561 nm laser move towards the boundary region of the crystal. The different fluorescence patterns obtained varying excitation lasers suggest the existence of distinct fluorescence emitting species having different degree of coke growth.
