A coil-type capacitive sensor on which the deterioration of the car engine oil can be in situ measured, has been developed. The sensor was designed to get over 10 pF at the limited space on the drain hole of the oil pan. The design factors for stable capacitance measurement such as coil diameter and winding condition, materials and configuration of the coil former, and shielding method, etc., were known by both computer simulation and experimental investigations. The dielectric properties measured by several sensors for an used sample oil were consisted within 0.25%. The sensor installed on the car having severe vibration, temperature and humidity fluctuation, even electromagnetic noise, has shown very distinguishable results.

Because forest fire changes the direction according to the environmental elements, it is difficult to predict the direction of it. Currently, though some researchers have been studied to which predict the forest fire occurrence and the direction of it, using the remote detection technique, it is not enough and efficient. And recently because of the development of the sensor technique, a lot of In-Situ sensors are being developed. These kinds of In-Situ sensor data are used to collect the environmental elements such as temperature, humidity, and the velocity of the wind. Accordingly we need the prediction technique about the environmental elements analysis and the direction of the forest fire, using the In-Situ sensor data. In this paper, as a technique for predicting the direction of the forest fire, we propose the correlation analysis technique about In-Situ sensor data such as temperature, humidity, the velocity of the wind. The proposed technique is based on the clustering method and clusters the In-Situ sensor data. And then it analyzes the correlation of the multivariate correlations among clusters. These kinds of prediction information not only helps to predict the direction of the forest fire, but also finds the solution after predicting the environmental elements of the forest fire. Accordingly, this technique is expected to reduce the damage by the forest fire which occurs frequently these days.
Since data-driven building technologies have been widely applied to building energy systems, the accuracy of building sensors has more impacts on the building performance and system performance analysis. Various building sensors, however, can have typical errors including a random error (noise) and a systematic error (bias). The systematic error is indicated by the difference between the mean of measurements and their true value. It may occur due to the sensor's physical condition, measured phenomena, working environments inside the systems. Unfortunately, a conventional calibration method has limitations in calibrating the systematic errors because of the difference between working environments and calibration conditions. In such situations, a novel sensor calibration method is needed to handle various sensor errors, especially for systematic errors, in building energy systems having various thermodynamic environments. This study proposes a building sensor calibration method named Virtual In-situ Calibration (VIC) and shows how it is applied into a real building system and how it solves the sensor errors.

Non-contacting capacitive sensors, based on principle of the cross capacitor, for measuring small displacement less than 1.95$\pm$0.5 mm have been fabricated and characterized. To overcome disadvantages of the existed capacitive sensors, the new sensor is consisted of 4-electrodes which are formed 2 active electrodes and 2 guard electrodes on a sapphire plate with diameter 17mm and thickness 0.7 mm, and are symmetrically situated with constant gap of 0.2 mm among the electrodes. The sensor is evaluated to be correlation coefficient of 0.9987 for the range of 1.95$\pm$0.5 mm and that of 0.9995 for 1.95$\pm$0.25 mm range. This sensor can be used for in situ measurements in the mechanical mirror polishing with precision less than $\pm$1${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$.

Context-awareness techniques in ubiquitous computing environment provide various services to users who need to get information via the analysis of collected information from sensors in a spatial area. Context-awareness has been increased in ubiquitous computing and is applied to many different applications such as disaster management system, intelligent robot system, transportation management system, shopping management system, and digital home service. Many researches have recently focused on services that provide the appropriate information, which are collected from Internet by different kinds of sensors, to users according to context of their surrounding environment. In this paper, we propose an abstraction model to manage the large-scale contextual information and their metadata which are collected from different kinds of in-situ sensors in a spatial area and are presented them on the web. This model is composed of the modules expressing functional elements of sensors using sensorML(Sensor Model Language) based on XML language and the modules managing contextual information, which is transmitted from the sensors.

In this paper, we focus on optimization of the in-situ phosphorous (P) doping of low-pressure chemical vapor deposited (LPCVD) poly Si resistors for obtaining near-zero temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) at temperature range from 25 to $600^{\circ}C$. The deposited poly Si films were annealed by rapid thermal anneal (RTA) process at the temperature range from 900 to $1000^{\circ}C$ for 90s in nitrogen ambient to relieve intrinsic stress and decrease the TCR in the poly Si layer and get the Ohmic contact. After the RTA process, a roughness of the thin film was slightly changed but the grain size and crystallinity of the thin film with the increase in anneal temperature. The film annealed at $1,000^{\circ}C$ showed the behavior of Schottky contact and had dislocations in the films. Ohmic contact and TCR of $334.4{\pm}8.2$ (ppm/K) within 4 inch wafer were obtained in the measuring temperature range of 25 to $600^{\circ}C$ for the optimized 200 nm thick-poly Si film with width/length of $20{\mu}m/1,800{\mu}m$. This shows the potential of in-situ P doped LPCVD poly Si as a resistor for pressure sensor in harsh environment applications.

Dissolved oxygen sensors have characteristics in which data drift occurs over time. Therefore, in-situ calibration of the dissolved oxygen sensor is essential to accurately measure the concentration of dissolved oxygen in seawater. In order to provide a method for in-situ calibration, appropriate number of samples for calibration, and laboratory calibration interval of the dissolved oxygen sensor, the dissolved oxygen sensor values were compared with the measured values by titration on a total of 133 samples from three different cruises in the Indian Ocean, Pacific Ocean, and East Sea over a period of about one year. As a result, it is preferable to calibrate the sensor value using the correlation of a straight line obtained by directly comparing the final concentration value given by the sensor and the measured value. For the accurate calibration, at least 30 samples must be used to enable in-situ calibration within an accuracy range of about 1%. In addition, it is recommended that a laboratory calibration should perform within 1 year for the membrane type dissolved oxygen sensor for CTD to achieve a performance of 70% or more.
There is a growing demand for simple, cost-effective, and accurate analytical tools to determine the concentrations of biological and environmental compounds. In this study, a stable electroactive thin film of cobalt hexacyanoferrate (Cohcf) was prepared as an in situ chemical precipitant using electrostatic adsorption of $Co^{2+}$ on a silicate sol-gel matrix (SSG)-modified indium tin oxide electrode pre-adsorbed with $[Fe(CN)_6]^{3-}$ ions. The modified electrode was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electrochemical techniques. Electrocatalytic oxidation of hydrazine on the modified electrode was studied. An electrochemical sensor for hydrazine was constructed on the SSG-Cohcf-modified electrode. The oxidation peak currents showed a linear relationship with the hydrazine concentration. This study provides insight into the in situ growth and stability behavior of Cohcf nanostructures and has implications for the design and development of advanced electrode materials for fuel cells and sensor applications.
Controlling the balance of motion in a context involving a biped robot navigating a rugged surface or a step is a difficult task. In the present study, a $3{\times}5$ flexible piezoelectric tactile sensor array is developed to provide a foot pressure map and zero moment point for a biped robot. We introduce an innovative concept involving structural electrodes on a piezoelectric film in order to improve the sensitivity. The tactile sensor consists of a polymer piezoelectric film, PVDF, between two patterned flexible print circuit substrates (FPC). Additionally, a silicon rubber bump-like structure is attached to the FPC and covered by a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) layer. Experimental results show that the output signal of the sensor exhibits a linear behavior within 0.2 N ~ 9 N, while its sensitivity is approximately 42 mV/N. According to the characteristic of the tactile sensor, the readout module is designed for an in-situ display of the pressure magnitudes and distribution within $3{\times}5$ taxels. Furthermore, the trajectory of the zero moment point (ZMP) can also be calculated by this program. Consequently, our tactile sensor module can provide the pressure map and ZMP information to the in-situ feedback to control the balance of moment for a biped robot.
A series of column experiments was conducted to develop a monitoring system for in-situ and realtime measurement of ozone transport in unsaturated porous media using a fiber optic sensor. The calibration of the fiber optic transflection dip probe (FOTDP) system was successfully carried out at various ozone concentrations using a column with length of 30 cm and diameter of 5 cm packed with glass beads, which don't react with gaseous ozone. The breakthrough curves (BTCs) of ozone were obtained by converting the normalized intensity into ozone concentration. The FOTDP system worked well for in-situ monitoring of gas phase ozone at various water saturations and in presence of soil organic matter (SOM). However, the FOTDP system did not measure the ozone concentration at more than 70% water saturation.
