  • This paper explores the influence of Arab culture on the culture of Bugis-Makassar, the two major ethnic groups in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, particularly after their Islamization in the early 17th century. The paper argues that since then, the on-going process of Islamization in the region has also brought a continuous flow of ideas and cultural practices from Mecca to Indonesia by means of the hajj pilgrims, Arab traders, and the establishment of Islamic educational institutions that emphasized the teaching and use of Arabic language in education. These factors, among others, have facilitated a cultural inflow which enabled cultural practices borne of West Asia (Middle East) to be integrated into local customs and beliefs. The paper particularly depicts the most observable forms of Arabic cultural integration, acculturation, and assimilation into the Bugis-Makassar culture such as the use of Arabic in Islamic schools and religious sermons; the Arab-style dressing by religious scholars, teachers, and students; the wearing of the hijab (head cover) by women; and the change of people's names from local into Arabic. By utilizing the historical and anthropological approach, this paper investigates this dynamic process of adaptation and integration of a foreign culture that first came through the Islamization of a local culture, exploring the role of an Islamic missionary and educational institutions in mediating and maintaining such cultural integration processes.

  • This paper aims to clarify the effects of grinding conditions on the ground surface and bending strength in surface grinding of various ferrites with diamond wheel. The main conclusions obtained were as follows. The surface roughness becomes better at lower wheel speed in the case of v/V=1$\times$10-3, and the condition of v/V=1$\times$10-4shows the best performance for the finish grinding. When the relative contact temperature becomes lower at a constant value of v/V, the ground surface exhibits lower roughness. The ground surface shows that the fracture process during grinding becomes more brittle at the higher value of v/V. The damage depth which affect the bending strength is below 10$\mu$m in the grinding condition of S=10㎣/mm.s with the diamond tool after dressing & truing, however, the depth increases with increasing removal rate(S). When the strength degradation due to grinding is larger, the removal depth for the recovery of strength requires a larger size.

  • This paper deals with monitoring of grinding wheel wear in surface grinding process. A laser scanning micrometer is used to measure the circumferential shape as well as the axial shape of grinding wheel. The monitoring system is applied to two kinds of grinding methods: plunge and traverse grinding. Through experiments, it is found that measurement of grinding wheel wear reveals information of roughness of ground surface and the adequate dressing time. In addition, monitoring of grinding wheel wear makes it possible to identify abnormal grinding conditions.

  • Stereo matching technique is used in many practical fields like satellite image analysis and computer vision. In this paper, we suggest a method to extract a target object image from a complicated background. For example, human face image can be extracted from random background. This method can be applied to computer vision such as security system, dressing simulation by use of extracted human face, 3D modeling, and security system. Many researches about stereo matching have been performed. Conventional approaches can be categorized into area-based and feature-based method. In this paper, we start from area-based method and apply area tracking using scanning window. Coarse depth information is used for area merging process using area searching data. Finally, we produce a target object image.

  • Yellow poplar is well known commercial hardwood species in the world because of its availability, rapid growth, large size, excellent form, early natural pruning, and the good working quality of the wood. Therefore, yellow poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera L.) has been adopted in South Korea for decades ago, and its cultivating the saplings and silvicultural system have been studied. However, yellow poplar is still embroiled in controversy for utilization of use and worth. This species has not only advantages such as lower weight, light color, and higher machinability and bending processing, but also has disadvantages which are bad smell and different colors on heartwood and sapwood. In this study, the objective was that use of yellow poplar board as furniture materials by drying and painting process. Thirty years old yellow poplar was cut and dried for 7 days by high-frequency dryness. Adjustment of color tone to walnut color was conducted with multiple colorants and various number of spread times. Uniform color of yellow poplar on heartwood and sapwood was accomplished by applying 1 time stain (green), 2 times transparent primer, 1 time middle-painting (walnut), and 2 times top-painting (walnut) in sequentially. The painted yellow poplar board was used to manufacture table and dressing table. During the furniture manufacture process, no critical issues were occurred on part of jointing and painting. This painting method may be useful data for future use of yellow poplar as furniture materials.

  • Diamond mechanical polishing (DMP) is a crucial process in a sapphire wafering process to improve flatness and achieve the target thickness by using free abrasives. In a DMP process, material removal rate (MRR) is a key factor to reduce process time and cost. Controlling mechanical parameters, such as velocity and pressure, can increase the MRR in a DMP process. However, there are limitations of using high velocities and pressures for achieving a high MRR owing to their side effects. In this paper, we present the lapping characteristics and improvement of MRR by using a fixed abrasive plate through an experimental study. The change in MRR as a function of velocity and pressure follows Preston's equation. The surface roughness of a wafer decreases as the plate velocity and pressure increases. We observe a sharp decrease in MRR over the lapping time at a high velocity and pressure in the velocity and pressure test. An analysis of surface roughness (Rq and Rpk) indicates that wear of abrasives decreases the MRR sharply. In order to investigate the effect of abrasive wear on the MRR, we utilize a cutting fluid and a rough wafer. The cutting fluid delays the wear of abrasives resulting in improvement of MRR drop. The rough wafer maintains the MRR at a stable rate by self-dressing.

  • This paper presents results of monitoring grinding processes with on-the-machine measurement of surface roughness by using nux ratios of scattered lights. A compact, on-the-machine surface roughness sensor. which consists of a diodelaser and several optic units. is developed. The control unit is also developed. The developed sensor together with the controller is applied for monitoring grinding processes of two different grinding machines. Experimental results show that the nux ratios and their standard deviations measured by the developed sensor over the entire ground surface are useful for monitoring grinding conditions. In particular, the sensor and the control unit are proved to be useful for monitoring grinding processes in order to detect abnormal grinding conditions and dressing time.
