  • Multi-target X-ray tube is a new type X-ray source, and can be applied in many fields such as sensitive X-ray fluorescence analysis and medical imaging. In this work, we report an electric field modulation multi-target X-ray tube, which contains four targets (Cr, Ni, Au, Mo) coated on a Beryllium (Be) window. A four-valve electric field deflector was developed to deflect the electron beam to bombard the corresponding targets. Particle dynamics analysis software was employed to simulate the particle tracking of electron beam. The results show that the 30 keV electron beam could get a 6.7 mm displacement on the target plane by 105 V/m electric field. The focus areas are about 2 mm × 5 mm and 4 mm × 2.5 mm after deflection in two directions. Thermal behavior calculated by ANSYS shows that the designed target assembly could withstand a 10 W continuous power. The optimum target thicknesses and emission spectra were obtained by Geant4 when the thickness of Be window was 300 mm and the electron beam incident angle was 0.141 rad. The results indicate that this multi-target X-ray tube could provide different X-ray sources effectively.

  • In this paper, the approximately coupled method of finite element method and boundary element method to obtain efficient and accurate analysis results is proposed for a two-dimensional elasto-static problem with a geometrically abruptly changing part. As the finite element of a two-dimensional problem, three-node and four-node plane stress element is applied, and as the boundary element of a two-dimensional problem, three-node boundary element is applied. In the modeling stage, firstly, an entire analysis target object is modeled as finite elements, and then a geometrically abruptly changing part is modeled as boundary elements. The boundary element is defined using the nodes defined for modeling finite elements. In the analysis stage, finite element analysis is firstly performed on a entire analysis target object, and boundary element analysis is automatically performed afterwards. As for the boundary conditions at boundary element analysis, displacement conditions and stress conditions, which are the results of finite element analysis, are applied. As a numerical example, the analysis results for a two-dimensional elasto-static problem, a plate with a crack, are presented and investigated.

  • The failure mode of piping systems due to seismic loads is the low-cycle fatigue failure with ratcheting, and it was found that the element in which nonlinear behavior is concentrated and damage occurs is the elbow. In this study, to quantitatively express the failure criteria for a pipe elbow of SCH40 3-inch carbon steel under low-cycle fatigue, the limit state was defined as leakage, and the in-plane cyclic loading test was conducted. For the carbon steel pipe elbow, which is the vulnerable part to seismic load of piping systems, the damage index was represented using the moment-deformation angle relationship, and it was compared and analyzed with the damage index calculated using the force-displacement relationship. An attempt was made to quantitatively express the limit state of the carbon steel pipe elbow involving leakage using the damage index, which was based on the dissipated energy caused by repeated external forces.

  • This paper presents an experimental study on the flexural performance of concrete members strengthened with external steel plates for the purpose of improving seismic performance. In order to strengthen the structure, a strengthening method was applied that wraps the walls and columns with steel members. The partial section of the wall with the longest span in the structure was manufactured in real size and the strengthening effect was confirmed by performing a static load test. As a result of the experiment, it was confirmed that the strengthened section exhibited sufficient flexural performance satisfied to the seismic requirements, but the behavior until failure was not obtained because of actuator capacity. It was confirmed that the strengthened member resists the out-of-plane moment with a composite behavior. It was verified that the stiffness and load carrying capacity of the strengthened member were improved compared to the non-strengthened member by displacement and strain measurements.

  • In this paper we perform a linearized buckling analysis using the Kirchhoff plate theory and the von Karman nonlinear strain-displacement relation. Design sensitivity analysis(DSA) expressions for plane elasticity and buckling problems are derived with respect to Young's modulus and thickness. Using the design sensitivity, we can formulate the topology optimization method for minimizing the compliance and maximizing eigenvalues. We develop a topology optimization method applicable to plate buckling problems using the prestress for buckling analysis. Since the prestress is needed to assemble the stress matrix for buckling problem using the von Karman nonlinear strain, we introduced out-of-plane motion. The design variables are parameterized into normalized bulk material densities. The objective functions are the minimum compliance and the maximum eigenvalues and the constraint is the allowable volume. Through several numerical examples, the developed DSA method is verified to yield very accurate sensitivity results compared with the finite difference ones and the topology optimization yields physically meaningful results.

  • In this paper an analytical study is carried out to improve the capacity of absorbing boundary using dashpot, one of the most widely used absorbing boundaries in FEM. Using 2-D harmonic plane wave equation, absorbing boundary condition is modified to maximize its capacity according to the incident angle. Validity of the absorbing boundary conditions which is modified is investigated by adopting the solution of Miller and Pursey. The Miller and Pursey's problem is then numerically simulated using the finite element method. The absorption ratios are calculated by comparing the displacements at the absorbing boundary to those at the free field without the absorbing boundary. The numerical study is carried out through comparison of displacement at the interior region and the boundary of the numerical model.

  • In this paper, a half-scaled substructure test was performed to evaluate the buckling and structural safety of an existing transmission tower subjected to wind load. A loading scheme was devised to reproduce the dead and wind loads of a prototype transmission tower, which uses a triangular jig that is mounted on the reduced model to which the similarity law of a half length was applied. As a result of the preliminary numerical analysis carried out to evaluate the stability of a specimen for the design load, is was confirmed that the calculated axial forces of tower leg members were distributed to $80{\sim}90%$ of an admissible buckling load. When the substructured transmission tower was loaded by 270% of its maximum admissible buckling load, it was failed due to the local buckling that is occurred in joints with weak constraints for out-of-plane behavior of leg members. By inspection of load-displacement curves, displacements and strains of members, it is considered that this local buckling was due to additional eccentric force by unbalanced deformation because the time that is reached to yielding stress due to the bending moment is different at each point of a same section.

  • The slope stability analysis by the limit equilibrium method has the disadvantage that it can be applied only when the analysis is performed by setting the critical plane after analyzing the active surface many times and the soil is uniform and only the safety factor can be calculated. However, the analysis using the strength reduction analysis method has advantages that the engineer can judge various aspects and calculate the safety factor. In this study, the safety factor according to the change of slope and shear strength was compared and analyzed using limit equilibrium analysis and strength reduction method. It is suggested that it is desirable to use the strength reduction method which can synthetically review the stress, displacement, and strain in the soil.

  • This paper describes the development of force limiting device(FLD). The FLD could induce compressive yield before occurring elastic buckling for slender member under compressive load. Therefore, it might prevent reduction of load carrying capacity by elastic buckling and the structures with the devices would behave stable. A new type of FLD reduced cross area is proposed in this study different to existing studies like as out of plane type, slit type and folded plate type. The parameters of specimens are depth, width and number of cutting. The structural capacity and characteristics of proposed types were verified by experiment and FEM analysis. The FLD of cutting type is efficient in compressive member.

  • The volume control method which utilize a pressure node added into a finite shell element can overcome the drawbacks of conventional load control method and displacement control method. In this study, an improved volume control method is introduced for effective analysis of path-dependent behaviors of RC columns subjected to lateral cyclic loading or reversed cyclic loading along with compressive loading. RC shell structures and RC hollow columns are analyzed by discretizing the structures with layered shell elements and by applying in-plane two dimensional constitutive equations for concrete layers and reinforcement layers of the shell elements. The so-called path dependent volume control method as a finite element analysis technique is verified by comparing analysis results with other data including experimental results. The validity and applicability of the modeling technique is also confirmed by the comparison.
