In-plane and out-of-plane free vibration analysis of Timoshenko curved beams is addressed based on the isogeometric method, and an effective scheme to avoid numerical locking in both of the two patterns is proposed in this paper. The isogeometric computational model takes into account the effects of shear deformation, rotary inertia and axis extensibility of curved beams, and is applicable for uniform circular beams, and more complicated variable curvature and cross-section beams as illustrated by numerical examples. Meanwhile, it is shown that, the $C^{p-1}$-continuous NURBS elements remarkably have higher accuracy than the finite elements with the same number of degrees of freedom. Nevertheless, for in-plane or out-of-plane vibration analysis of Timoshenko curved beams, the NURBS-based isogeometric method also exhibits locking effect to some extent. To eliminate numerical locking, the selective reduced one-point integration and $\bar{B}$ projection element based on stiffness ratio is devised to achieve locking free analysis for in-plane and out-of-plane models, respectively. The suggested integral schemes for moderately slender models obtain accurate results in both dominated and non-dominated regions of locking effect. Moreover, this strategy is effective for beam structures with different slenderness. Finally, the influence factors of structural parameters of curved beams on their natural frequency are scrutinized.
This paper deals with in-plane vibration analysis of curved beams. The exact dynamic element method is applied to obtain the dynamic model for curved beams. Numerical examples are provided to validate the proposed modeling and analysis method. The numerical results show that the proposed method is useful for the dynamic analysis of curved beams.
This paper presents the geometrical methodology to decouple the vibration modes of an elastically supported single rigid body in three-dimensional space. It is shown that the vibration modes can be decoupled by placing the center of elasticity at suitable locations and thereby yielding the plane(s) of symmetry for the given stiffness matrix. The developed methodology has been applied to the actuator supported by the 4-wire suspensions in optical discs, which has one plane of symmetry. For this numerical example, the axes of vibrations have been computed and illustrated with the natural frequencies. The forced response at the objective lens is represented and its geometrical interpretation has been explained as the mutual moment between the axis of vibration and the applied wrench times the line coordinates of the axis of vibration.
The differential equations governing free vibrations of the elastic arches with hollow section are derived in polar coordinates, in which the effect of rotatory inertia is included. Natural frequencies is computed numerically for parabolic arches with both clamped ends and both hinged ends. Comparisons of natural frequencies between this study and reference are made to validate theories and numerical methods developed herein. The lowest four natural frequency parameters are reported, with the rotatory inertia, as functions of three non-dimensional system parameters: the breadth ratio, the thickness ratio and the rise to span length ratio.
A four-degree of freedom model is suggested to understand the basic dynamical behaviors of the normal interaction between two masses of the friction induced normal vibration system. The two masses may be considered as the pad and the disk of the brake. The phase space analysis is performed to understand complicated in-plane dynamics of the non-linear model. Attractors in the phase space are examined for various conditions of the parameters. In certain conditions, the attractor becomes a limit cycle showing the stick-slip phenomena. In this paper, on the basis of the in-plane motion not only the existence of the limit cycle but also the size of the limit cycle is examined o demonstrate the non-linear dynamics that leads the unstable state and then the normal vibration is investigated as the state of the in-plane motion For only one case of the system frequency(two masses with same natural frequencies), the propensity of the normal vibration is discussed in detail. The results show an important fact that it may be not effective when too much damping is present in the only one part of the masses.
The vibrational characteristics of a radial-ply (155SR13 4PR) and a biased-ply tire (6.15-134PR) were investigated for examining the effects of tires with different structure on the ride characteristics of the vehicle. The natural frequencies at the tread band, mode shapes, and damping factors of two tires at the state of plane vibration were determined experimentally. The test work was performed at four levels of the inflation pressure, ranging from 171.7 kPa to 245.2 kPa, and three levels of the vertical load, deviating by 10% from the standard load designated by the Department of Transportation of the United States of America. The following results were drawn by the analysis of the test results: 1. The first-order natural frequencies of the radial-ply and the biased-ply tires at the tread band were 112 Hz and 159 Hz, respectively, at the state o f the free vibration when the inflation pressure of 196.2 kPa was applied. It was known that the biased-ply tire has higher resonant frequency than the radial-ply tire and the natural frequencies of the both tires move to the high frequency range as t he inflation pressure is increased. 2. The vibration modes of both tires were quite different. No big difference in mode shapes was examined as the inflation pressure was increased. But the natural frequencies of two tires were changed. For the radial-ply tire, no difference in mode shape was found whether the vertical load was applied or not. But a significant difference in mode shape was examined for the biased-ply tire. 3. Any difference was not found in damping factor as the different inflation pressures were applied. 4. When no vertical load was applied, damping factors of the radial-ply and biased-ply tire at the state of the natural vibration ranged from 2.6 to 5.9%, and from 4.1 to 7.8%, respectively. It was estimated that the radial-ply tire would have better cushioning than the biased-ply tire since the vertical spring rate of the radial-ply tire was much less than that of the biased-ply tire, even though the damping effect of the radial-ply tire was smaller than that of the biased-ply tire.
This paper deals with the free, in-plane vibrations of curved members with the translational(radial and tangential directions) and rotational springs at the ends. The governing differential equations for the circular curved member are solved numerically using the corresponding boundary conditions. The lowest three natural frequencies and the corresponding mode shapes are obtained over a range of non-dimensional system parameters: the subtended angle, the slenderness ratio, the translational spring stiffness, and the rotational spring stiffness.
This paper is concerned with free vibration characteristics and natural frequency of horizontally curved composite plate girder bridges. Three-dimensional finite element models are developed for the girders using the software package LUSAS and analyses carried out on the models. The validity of the finite element models is first established through comparison with the corresponding results published by other researchers. Studies are then carried out to investigate the effects of total number of girders, number of cross-frames and curvature on the free vibration response of horizontally curved composite plate girder bridges. The results confirm the fact that bending modes are always coupled with torsional modes for horizontally curved bridge girder systems. The results show that the first bending mode is influenced by composite action between the concrete deck and steel beam at low subtended angle but, on the girders with larger subtended angle at the centre of curvature such influence is non-existence. The increase in the number of girders results in higher natural frequency but at a decreasing rate. The in-plane modes viz. longitudinal and arching modes are significantly influenced by composite action and number of girders. If no composite action is taken into account the number of girders has no significant effect for the in-plane modes.
When Timoshenko arcs considering the shear deformation and rotatory inertia have elastic supports, the authors analyze in-plane free vibration of them by the transfer influence coefficient method. This method finds the natural frequencies of them using the transfer of influence coefficient after obtaining the transfer matrix of arc element from numerical integration of the differential equations governing the vibration of arc. In this study, two computer programs were made by the transfer influence coefficient method and the transfer matrix method for analyzing free vibration of Timoshenko arcs. From numerical results of four computational models, we confirmed that the transfer influence coefficient method is a reliable method when analyzing the free vibration of Timoshenko arcs. In particular, the transfer influence coefficient method is a effective method when analyzing the free vibration of arcs with rigid supports.
The possibility of detecting a crack in L-shaped pipes filled with fluid based on measurement of transverse natural frequencies is examined. The problem is solved by representing the crack by a massless rotational spring, simulating the out-of-plane transverse vibration only without solving the coupled torsional vibration and using the transfer matrix method for solution of the governing equation. The theoretical solutions are verified by experiments. The cracks considered are external, circumferentially oriented and have straight front. Pipes made of aluminium and mild steel are tested with water as internal fluid. Crack size to pipe thickness ratio ranging from 0.20 to 0.57 and fluid (gauge) pressure in the range of 0 to 10 atmospheres are examined. The rotational spring stiffness is obtained by an inverse vibration analysis and deflection method. The details of the two methods are given. The results by the two methods are presented graphically and show good agreement. Crack locations are also determined by the inverse analysis. The maximum absolute error in the location is 13.80%. Experimentally determined variation of rotational spring stiffness with ratio of crack size to thickness is utilized to predict the crack sizes. The maximum absolute errors in prediction of crack size are 17.24% and 16.90% for aluminium and mild steel pipes respectively.
