  • Many applications in the area of location-based services and personal navigation require nowadays the location determination of a user not only in outdoor environment but also indoor. To locate a person or object in a building, systems that use either infrared, ultrasonic or radio signals, and visible light for optical tracking have been developed. The use of WiFi for location determination has the advantage that no transmitters or receivers have to be installed in the building like in the case of infrared and ultrasonic based location systems. WiFi positioning technology adopts IEEE802.11x standard, by observing the radio signals from access points installed inside a building. These access points can be found nowadays in our daily environment, e.g. in many office buildings, public spaces and in urban areas. The principle of operation of location determination using WiFi signals is based on the measurement of the signal strengths to the surrounding available access points at a mobile terminal (e.g. PDA, notebook PC). An estimate of the location of the terminal is then obtained on the basis of these measurements and a signal propagation model inside the building. The signal propagation model can be obtained using simulations or with prior calibration measurements at known locations in an offline phase. The most common location determination approach is based on signal propagation patterns, namely WiFi fingerprinting. In this paper the underlying technology is briefly reviewed followed by an investigation of two WiFi positioning systems. Testing of the system is performed in two localization test beds, one at the Vienna University of Technology and the second at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. First test showed that the trajectory of a moving user could be obtained with a standard deviation of about ${\pm}$ 3 m.

  • We propose an efficient uplink bandwidth request-allocation algorithm for variable-rate real-time service in IEEE 802.11 broadband wireless access networks. By introducing a notion of target delay under the framework of dual feedback, the proposed algorithm can assure the desired level of QoS while minimizing wastage of bandwidth allocation.

  • This paper implements mobile Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) receiver using Software Defined Radio (SDR) technology. SDR system is difficult to implement on the mobile handset because of restrictions that are computing power and under space constraints. The implemented receiver processes mobile WiMAX software modem on Open Multimedia Application Platform (OMAP) System on Chip (SoC) and Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). OMAP SoC is composed of ARM processor and Digital Signal Processor (DSP). ARM processor supports Single Instruction Multiple Data (SIMD) instruction which could operate on a vector of data with a single instruction and DSP is powerful image and video accelerators. For this reason, we suggest the possibility of SDR technology in the mobile handset. In order to verify the performance of the mobile WiMAX receiver, we measure the software modem runtime respectively. The experimental results show that the proposed receiver is able to do real-time signal processing.

  • Wi syndrome is the syndrome that reveals muscle relaxation without contraction and muscle relaxation occurs in the low or upper limb, in severe case leads to death. We experienced a 80year-old woman who had a Wi syndrome, and treated by the way of reinforcing weakness of the spleen and stomach(脾胃虛弱). After being treated, the patient showed that symptoms (gait disturbance, ptosis, dysphonia) was improved. This result suggests that oriental medical treatment has good effect on Wi syndrome.

  • Currently, the performance of positioning technology based on radio wave fingerprint is greatly influenced by the selection of data comparison algorithm. In this case, the accuracy of the indoor positioning can be greatly improved by the data expansion technique necessary for the learning structure. In this paper, we discuss the importance of learning structure that can be applied to actual positioning through classification and extension of learning data to construct learning structure based on Wi-Fi radio fingerprint.

  • WiBro radio frequency (RF) repeater is used for solving the problem of partial shadow areas in the wireless communication field that uses time-division duplexing (TDD) mode. In this paper, a method to efficiently generate TDD signals for WiBro RF repeater is proposed and its digital circuit is implemented. A TDD signal is detected from RF signals transmitted/received to/from RF repeater and then inputted again into the RF repeater, so that it can operate normally. First, the envelope of downlink signals is detected and then clamped to extract the basic form of a TDD signal using an operational amplifier circuit. Next, the TDD signal is generated by restoring and filtering the shape which has been distorted by the wireless channel. The algorithm and system to acquire TDD signal are developed with a goal to have simple but powerful functions with as little cost as possible. The proposed method is implemented as an RF-digital integrated system and verified through the experiments under the same condition as actual WiBro service environment.

  • Wi-Fi Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) is considered one of the most important sensor data types for indoor localization. However, collecting a RSSI fingerprint, which consists of pairs of a RSSI measurement set and a corresponding location, is costly and time-consuming. In this paper, we propose a Wi-Fi RSSI learning technique without true location data to overcome the limitations of static database construction. Instead of the true reference positions, inertial measurement unit (IMU) data are used to generate pseudo locations, which enable a trainer to move during data collection. This improves the efficiency of data collection dramatically. From an experiment it is seen that the proposed algorithm successfully learns the unsupervised Wi-Fi RSSI positioning model, resulting in 2 m accuracy when the cumulative distribution function (CDF) is 0.8.

  • Recently wireless data services have widely spread on various multimedia devices such as smart phones and tablets. Existing wired data services have been replaced by wireless data services using mobile devices. Especially domestic mobile devices supporting both Wireless-Fidelity (Wi-Fi) and long term evolution (LTE) services have increased steadily. While Wi-Fi network is provided free of charge, LTE network is offered to pay for. Therefore, mobile devices provide smart network switch to support both preferred Wi-Fi and LTE networks. However, such handover and roaming between Wi-Fi and LTE networks can cause data connection stop in spite of charged data services. This paper has proposed the method to overcome data connection stop for guaranteeing seamless data service during handover and roaming procedures between networks.

  • In this letter, we designed monopole microstrip antenna for WLAN / WiMAX system. The monopole antenna is designed by FR-4 substrate with size is $30mm{\times}40mm$. The proposed antenna is based on a planar monopole design which cover WLAN and WiMAX frequency bands. To obtainthe optimized parameters, we used the simulator, CST's Microwave Studio Program and found the parameters that greatly effect antenna characteristics. Using the obtained parameters, the antenna is designed. Thus the proposed antenna satisfied the -10 dB impedance bandwidth requirement while simultaneously covering the WLAN and WiMAX bands. And characteristics of gain and radiation patterns are obtained for WLAN/WiMAX frequency bands.

  • Since various networks are deployed and the most of users request higher mobility, there are many researches about the interworking between widely deployed 3G network and rapidly boarded WLAN. On the other side, WiBro is focused on as a next generation network, because many people expect that WiBro gives satisfaction about the enough mobility and mass data transmission. So the study of the integration between WiBro and cdma2000 will show better effects than the present study of the integration between WLAN and cdma2000. The L2 handoff proposed in this paper takes advantages over the existing L3 handoff scheme because it does not require the L3 procedure for the mobility unlike the L3 handoff. Through extensive computer simulations, the efficiency of the proposed scheme has been validated.
