  • The streaming potential generated by the electrokinetic flow within electric double layer of charged microchannel is applied to determine the zeta potential of hollow-fiber membrane pore by using the general Helmholtz-Smoluchowski equation. The streaming potential is know to provide a useful real-time information on the surface property and the interaction between pore and particles in actual situations and physicochemical conditions. The influence of physicochemical parameters upon the filtration with hollow-fibers has been examined with an in-situ and simultaneously monitoring the streaming potential as well as permeate flux. In particular, the present study examined an experimental method to identify the effect of cake layer which can vary according to the axial position of a hollow-fiber and the progress of membrane fouling by measuring the position-dependent streaming potential. As the latex concentration increases, the permeate flux decreased but the streaming potential increased. The growth of cake layer has been mire developed with increasing latex concentration, however, the effect of surface charges of latexes deposited on the membrane surface leads to increase the streaming potential. With increasing ionic concentration of KCI, both the permeate flux and the streaming potential decrease. The increase of ionic concentration provides a compact cake layer due to the shrinkage of Debye length and the decreased streaming potential results from the weakened ionic flows owing to a thin diffusive double layer.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a new technique to quickly assess the quantitative stability of a tunnel by using measured displacement at the tunnel construction site. To achieve this purpose, in this study, a critical strain concept was introduced for the first time and applied to an assessment of a tunnel under construction. The new technique calculates numerically the strains of the surrounding ground by using displacements measured during tunnel excavation. The techniques considering the relative displacement, shotcrete, and anisotropic characteristics of ground were newly introduced after reinvestigating the existing analysis technique. In addition, an analysis module was developed based on the proposed analysis technique in this study, and the applicability of the developed module was verified. To verify the module, first of all, the calculated excavation displacements of a cylindrical tunnel by analytic method and commercial programs (Pentagon-3D, Flac-2D) were compared for the confirmation of applicability of commercial programs. Then, the calculated excavation displacements under the same initial condition, both with and without a shotcrete lining, by two commercial programs were compared. finally, we assess the load condition and material properties of in-situ ground by inputting tunnel excavation displacement, which was calculated by a commercial program, into the developed analysis module (FAST-Ver. 1.2, feedback Analysis System for Tunneling), and checked whether the assessed results conform to the originally assumed values.

  • Cemented soils or concrete are usually cured under moisture conditions and their strength increases with curing time. An insufficient supply of water to cemented soils can contribute to hydration process during curing, which results in the variation of bonding strength of cemented soils. In this study, by the consideration of in situ water supply conditions, cemented sand with cement ratio less than 20% is prepared by air dry, wrapped, moisture, and underwater conditions. A series of unconfined compression tests are carried out to evaluate the effect of curing conditions on the strength of cemented soils. The strength of air dry curing specimen is higher than those of moisture and wrapped cured specimens when cement ratio is less than 10%, whereas it is lower when cement ratio is greater than 10%. Regardless of cement ratio, air dry cured specimens are stronger than underwater cured specimens. A strength increase ratio with cement ratio is calculated based on the strength of 4% cemented specimen. The strength increase ratio of air dry cured specimen is lowest and that of wrapped, moisture, and underwater cured ones increased by square. Strength of air dry cured specimen drops to maximum 30% after wetting when cement ratio is low. However, regardless of cement ratio, strength of moisture and wrapped specimens drops to an average 10% after wetting. The results of this study can predict the strength variation of cemented sand depending on water supply conditions and wetting in the field, which can guarantee the safety of geotechnical structures such as dam.

  • The degree of compaction of embankments is generally measured using the sand replacement method or a soil density gauge. However, these methods include coarse particles, which are relatively large. The degree of compaction is overestimated if the in-situ soil density is simply compared with the density obtained from a Proctor compaction test (KS F 2312, 2001), because the density of coarse particles is higher than that of soil. However, there is no recommended correction for the coarse particle ratio in Korea, thus intentionally increasing the degree of compaction for structures to which large loads are applied or for which compaction is critical. Here, a correction considering the Korean Proctor compaction test and the difference between the maximum allowable particle sizes was recommended after corrections for coarse particle ratios in other countries were collected and analyzed. The degree of compaction was re-estimated by applying the recommended correction to the results of both Proctor compaction and sand replacement tests. The degree of compaction without the correction of coarse particle ratio was overestimated, because the re-estimated degree of compaction decreased as the coarse particle ratio increased. The relatively accurate results obtained from the field application of the correction will offer long-term cost savings due to reduced maintenance fees during operation.

  • In many practical cases, design methods of pile have been used mainly semi empirical bearing capacity equations. It can be done that confirmation of pile bearing capacities through using of dynamic and static tests during constructing or after constructions. If a prediction of layered point pile bearing capacity could be done through simple tests during field investigation, it could be done that more reliable design of pile than a prediction of using semi empirical equations or static formulations. This paper suggests a method to estimated point bearing capacity during in-situ investigation by using the dynamic rod model pile and verifies the point bearing capacity compare with results of static pile load tests. From test results, the unit ultimate point bearing capacities are relatively similar through a dynamic rod model pile tests and static pile load tests. The unit ultimate point bearing capacity by using N value is shown about 50 % value of measured unit ultimate point bearing capacity from field test result and the prediction of the unit ultimate point bearing capacity by using N value is shown very conservative, illogical and uneconomical pile designs.

  • The regeneration of lost periodontal tissue is a major goal of therapy. Periodontal ligament cell(PDL) is a specialized connective tissue that connects cementum and alveolar bone to maintain and support teeth in situ and preserve tissue homoeostasis. Bone morphogenetic proteins(BMPs) have shown much potential in the reconstruction of the periodontum by stimulate new bone and new cementum formation. Limitiations of BMP administration to periodontal lesions is high dose delivery, BMP transient biological activity, and low bioavailability of factors at the wound site. Gene delivery method can be alternative treatment strategy to deliver BMPs to periodontal tissue. The purpose of this study is to investigate efficiency of BMP-2 gene delivery with cell-based therapy using PDL cells. PDL cell were transduced with adenoviruses encoding either BMP-2 or Lac-Z gene. To evaluate osteogenic activity of expressed BMP-2 on PDL cells, we investigated secreted BMP-2, cellular activity, ALPase, produced mineralized nodules. To evaluate collagen scaffold as carrier for transduced cell delivery, we examined morphology and secreted BMP-2 of transducd PDL cells on it. BMP-2 transducd PDL cells produced higher levels of BMP-2, ALPase, mineralized nodules than non transduced cells. Cellular activity of transduced cells was showed similar activity to non transduced cells. Transduce cells attached on collagen scaffold secreted BMP-2 at 7day and was showed similar morphology to non transduced cells. These results demonstrated that transduced PDL cells produced biologically active BMP-2 and collagen scaffold could be carrier of transducd cells.

  • A novel in situ-gelling and mucoadhesive acetaminophen liquid suppository was developed to improve the patient compliance of conventional solid suppository. In this study, acetaminophen liquid suppository, Likipe $n_{R}$, [aminophen/Poloxamer 407/Poloxamer 188/so4ium alginate (5/15/19/0.6%)] with relation temperature at 30-36 "C and suitable gel strength and bioadhesive force, dissolution pattern similar to conventional solid type suppository, Suspe $n_{R}$, was developed. Furthermore, the bioequivalence of two acetaminophen products was evaluated in 16 normal male volunteers (age 22-27 yr, body weight 56-72 kg) following sidle rectal administration. Test product was Likipe $n_{R}$ suppository (Dong-Wha Pharm. Corp., Korea)and reference product was Suspe $n_{R}$204-212 suppository (Hanmi Pharm. Corp., Korea). Both products contain 125 mg of acetaminophen. Four Suppositories of the test and the reference product were administered to the volunteers, respectively, by randomized two period cross-over study (2$\times$2 Latin square method). The determination of acetaminophen was accomplished using HPLC. Average drug concentrations at each sampling time and pharmacokinetic parameters calculated were not significantly different between two products (p>0.05); the area under the curve to last sampling time (24 hr) (AU $Co_{-2}$4h/) (30.14$\pm$8.64 vs 27.98$\pm$ 6.53 $\mu$g .h/ml), maximum plasma concentration ( $C_{max}$) (3.29$\pm$0.87 vs 3.60$\pm$0.66 $\mu$g/ml) and time to maximum plasma concentration ( $T_{max}$) (2.91 $\pm$0.55 vs 2.69$\pm$0.60 h). The differences of mean AUCo $_{24h}$, C-a. and T-between the two products (7.18%, 9.58% and 7.53%, respectively) were less than 20%. The power (1-7) and treatment difference ($\Delta$) for AU $Co_{24h}$, $C_{max}$ and $T_{max}$ were more than 0.8 and less than 0.2, respectively at $\alpha$=0.1. The confidence limits for AU $Co_{24h}$, $C_{max}$ and $T_{max}$ (-0.81 ~13.55%, -1.56~ 17.60 and -3.81 ~18.87%, respectively) were less than $\pm$ 20% at $\alpha$=0.1. These results suggest that the bioavailability of Likipe $n_{R}$ suppository is not significantly different from that of Suspe $n_{R}$ suppsitory. Therefore, two products are bio-equivalent based on the current results.results.lts.sults.results.lts.

  • The Moon has been an attractive planet as an outpost for deep space exploration since He-3 and water ice which can be used as energy resources were discovered. In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) construction material fabrication method is required for sustainable space planet exploration. In this paper, the possibility of microwave sintering technology for construction material fabrication was evaluated using lunar regolith that can be easily collected from the Moon surface. Experimental assessment of the influence factors on microwave sintering was conducted using a hybrid sintering system for efficient processing. The heat distribution in the furnace was observed using thermal paper that is coated with a material formulated to change color when exposed to heat. Based on this result, sintered cylindrical KLS-1s with a diameter of 1 cm and a height of 2 cm were fabricated. Densities were measured for the sintered KLS-1s under rotating turntable conditions that have an effect of microwave dispersion. The more dielectrics were arranged, the more microwaves were dispersed reducing the heat concentration, and thus a uniformity of sintered KLS-1s was enhanced.

  • Pressuremeter test estimates the deformational properties of soil from the relationship between applied pressure and the displacement of cavity wall. It is general to utilize the reloading curve for the estimation of deformational properties of soil because the initial loading curve can be affected by the disturbance caused by boring. On the other hand, the instrumental resolution or the variation of measured data makes it hard to estimate the maximum shear modulus from pressuremeter test results. This study suggested the methodology estimating the maximum shear modulus from pressuremeter test directly, based on the curve fitting of reloading curve. In addition, the difference was taken into account between the stress state around the probe in reloading and that of the in-situ state. Pressuremeter tests were conducted for 15 cases using a large calibration chamber, together with a number of reference tests. The maximum shear moduli taken from suggested method were compared with those from empirical correlation and bender element test.

  • Column and box tests were performed to investigate the removal efficiency of NAPL using the surfactant enhanced flushing In heterogeneous medium. Homogeneous Ottawa sand and heterogeneous soil were used to verify the increase of remediation efficiency for the surfactant enhanced flushing in column test. Box tests with two different heterogeneous sub-structure were performed to quantify the capability of the surfactant enhanced flushing as a remediation method to remove NAPL from the heterogeneous medium. Two different grain size sand layers were repeated in the box to simulate the heterogeneous layer formation and the modified fault structure was built to simulate the fault system in the box. O-xylene as a LNAPL and PCE as a DNAPL were used and oleamide as a non-ionic surfactant. The maximum NAPL effluent concentration with 1% oleamide flushing in the homogeneous column test increased about 460 times compared to that with only water flushing and about 250 times increased in the real soil column test. In heterogeneous medium, the maximum effluent concentration increased about 150 times in 1% oleamide flushing and most of NAPL were removed from the box within 8 pore volume flushing, suggesting that the removal efficiency increased very much compared to in only water flushing. Results investigated the capability of the surfactant enhanced remediation method to remove NAPL even in heterogeneous medium.
