This paper focuses on the impact of the wave passage effect on the long-span bridge. In order to make the wave passage effect more obvious, ground motion samples are selected from the near-fault ground motion of the 1999 Chi-Chi earthquake and an arch bridge with a 280m main span is selected as a bridge sample. The motion ground samples are divided into two groups according to the characteristics of near-fault. A sequence of fragility curves is developed. It is shown that the seismic damage is increased by the wave passage effect and the increase is more obvious in the near-fault ground motion.
Numerical and experimental studies were performed to investigate the aerodynamic performance of a thin wing in close vicinity to the ground. The vortex lattice method (VLM) was utilized to simulate the wing in ground (WIG) effect, which included freely deforming wake elements. The numerical results acquired through the VLM were compared to the experimental results. The experiment entailed varying the ground clearance using the DHMTU (Department of Hydromechanics of the Marine Technical University of Saint Petersburg) wing and the WIG craft model in the wind tunnel. The aero-dynamic influence of the design parameters, such as angles of attack, aspect ratios, taper ratios, and sweep angles were studied and compared between the numerical and experimental results associated with the WIG craft. Both numerical and experimental results suggested that the endplate augments the WIG effect for a small ground clearance. In addition, the vortex lattice method simulated the wake deformation following the wing in the influence of the ground effect.

Ground effect includes a reduction of induced drag, increase of lift, and nose-down moment during landing. These phenomena, occurring late in the landing maneuver, are considered to be of little significance because they tend to counteract and/or compensate in this respect. Even though it is unlikely to affect any flare profile variations appreciably, some pilots have reversed perception about such phenomenon and overestimate during landing. It is becoming a negative factor and is making an adverse effect on landing maneuver. This study examines the perception of ground effect of large aircraft pilots, reviews literature regarding ground effect, and makes suggestions that pilots can correctly recognize and respond to the effect during landing flare maneuvers.

The electricity distribution system in Korea is adopting a multi-grounding system. Protection of this distribution system against lightning is performed by installing overhead ground wires over the high voltage wires, and connecting the overhead ground wires to the ground every 200 m. The ground resistance in this system is limited not to exceed $50\Omega$ and overhead ground wire and neutral wire are multiple parallel lines. Although overhead ground wire and neutral wire are installed in different locations on the same pole, this circuit configuration has duplicated functions of providing a return path for unbalanced currents and protecting the distribution system against induced lightning. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze the induced lightning shielding effect according to the neutral wire installation structure of a 22.9kV distribution line in order to present a new 22.9kV distribution line structure model and characteristics. This study calculated induced lightning voltage by performing numerical analysis when an overhead ground wire is present in the multi-grounding type 22.9kV distribution line structure, and calculated the induced lightning shielding effect based on this calculated induced lightning voltage. In addition, this study proposed and analyzed an improved distribution line model allowing the use of both overhead wire and neutral wire to be installed in the current distribution lines. The result of MATLAB simulation using the conditions applied by Yokoyama showed almost no difference between the induced lightning voltage developed in the current line and that developed in the proposed line. This signifies that shielding the induced lightning voltage through overhead wire makes no difference between current and proposed distribution line structures. That is, this study found that the ground resistance of the overhead wire had an effect on the induced lightning voltage, and that the induced lightning shielding effect of overhead wire is small.

During a ground fault the maximum fault current and neutral to ground voltage will appear at the pole nearest to the fault. Distribution lines are consisted of three phase conductors, an overhead ground wire and a multi-grounded neutral line. In this paper phase to neutral faults were staged at the specified concrete pole along the distribution line and measured the ground fault current distribution in the ground fault current, three poles nearest to the fault point, overhead ground wire and neutral line. A effect by grounding resistance of poles of ground fault current in the 22.9[kV] multi-ground distribution system. by field tests.

Ground heat pump systems utilize the annually stable underground temperature to supply heat for space heating and cooling. The underground temperature affects not only the underground ecosystem, but also the performance of these systems. However, in spite of the widespread use of these systems, there have been few researches on the effect of the systems on underground temperature. In this research, case studies with numerical simulation have been conducted, in order to estimate the effect of ground heat pump systems on underground temperature. The simulation was coupled with the ground water-ground heat transfer model and the ground surface heat transfer model. In the result, it was found that the underground change depends on the heat transfer from the ground surface, the heat exchange rate, and the heat conductivity of soil.
Apartment housing block has been spreaded according to rapid economic development and urbanization in Korea. A parking lot is located at underground, artificial ground is inevitably created in apartment housing block. Artificial ground creates different thermal environment compared to natural ground, because the composition and coverage of artificial ground are diverse. In this study, the effect of the artificial ground on building thermal environment will be disscussed by simulation. Considering the result of simulation, surface albedo is more important for building energy performance. A purpose of this study is to examine how the characteristic of surface effect to thermal environment, and to develop design method for sustainable outdoor space.

Two dimensional turbulent flow simulations on the low Mach number - high Reynolds number flow about the NACA 4412 airfoil are carried out as the airfoil approaches a ground. It has turned out that angle of attack between 2 and 8 degrees is recommended for the airfoil to utilize the benefit of ground effect. For the large angle of attack, the increment of lift due to the ground effect is faded away and negative aerodynamic effect such as destabilizing aspect in static longitudinal stability occurs and the separation point moves to forward as the airfoil approaches a ground.

In this paper, it is aimed to determine the stochastic response of a suspension bridge subjected to spatially varying ground motions considering the geometric nonlinearity. Bosphorus Suspension Bridge built in Turkey and connects Europe to Asia in Istanbul is selected as a numerical example. The spatial variability of the ground motion is considered with the incoherence, wave-passage and site-response effects. The importance of site-response effect which arises from the difference in the local soil conditions at different support points of the structure is also investigated. At the end of the study, mean of the maximum and variance response values obtained from the spatially varying ground motions are compared with those of the specialised cases of the ground motion model. It is seen that each component of the spatially varying ground motion model has important effects on the dynamic behaviour of the bridge. The response values obtained from the general excitation case, which also includes the site-response effect causes larger response values than those of the homogeneous soil condition cases. The variance values calculated for the general excitation case are dominated by dynamic component at the deck and Asian side tower. The response values obtained for the site-response effect alone are larger than the response values obtained for the incoherence and wave-passage effects, separately. It can be concluded that suspension bridges are sensitive to the spatial variability of ground motion. Therefore, the incoherence, the wave-passage and especially the site-response effects should be considered in the stochastic analysis of this type of engineering structures.
