  • This study analyzed rainfall-runoff characteristics by deriving multiple impulse responses. The concept of competing impulse responses was used for deriving multiple impulse responses. Based on this concept, each response function derived competes to be selected for simulating the runoff measured. This concept of competing linear impulse responses was applied to four basins, Jeongseon, Yeongwol, Youngchoon and Chungju Dam. One to three impulse responses have been derived and compared each other considering basin characteristics. First, in case of deriving one linear impulse response, the peak flow of the impulse response was found to be increased according to their study basins area. In case of deriving two linear impulse response, the peak flow of the first impulse response and the duration of the second impulse response were increased according to their basin size. The case of deriving three impulse response showed similar characteristics of deriving two impulse responses. However, the peak flow of third impulse response was very small and lasted quite long time. Summarizing these results considering the basin characteristics, the first impulse response seems to be related with the surface runoff, the second impulse with the surface runoff and interflow, and the third impulse response with the interflow and base flow.

  • This paper proposes an impulse response shortening algorithm applicable to decision feedback equalization of single carrier wideband signal. When he impulse response shortening methods for narrowband signaling are applied to single carrier wideband signals, they result in noise enhancement problem, significantly deterioriting the receiver performance. This problem can be alleviated by educing the eigenvalue spread ratio of the impulse response, which can be achieved by adding additive white noise with small variance to the impulse response of the channel. The performance of the proposed scheme is verified by computer simulation.

  • In this paper, influences of a ultra wideband (UWB) antenna on impulse channel measurement are investigated in time domain (TD) and frequency domain (FD) as well. Firstly, impulse response of an UWB antenna is obtained and then using the result of impulse response of the UWB antenna, influences of the antenna on impulse radio channel is analyzed. Furthermore, using the impulse response of the UWB anenna, method of impulse radio channel analysis is presented by excluding the effect of the antenna from an impulse radio channel. For verifying the theory, a modified conical monopole antenna is designed for measuring impulse radio channel and its impulse response is obtained. After that, in order to investigate the effects of the UWB antenna on an impulse radio channel, multipath environments are set up in an anechonic chamber and transmission coefficient for each multipath environment is measured with an aid of vector network analyzer. Data measured in frequency domain is transformed into those in time domain by way of signal processing. Measurement shows that such properties of the antenna as dispersion and ringing affect impulse radio channel. Moreover, using the impulse response of the antenna, impulse response of only multipath channel is obtained.

  • Many trials have been used to model room impulse responses, all attempting to provide efficient representations of room acoustics. The traditional model designs for room impulse response seem to fail in accuracy, controllability, or computational efficiency. In time domain, a room impulse response is generally considered as the combination of three parts having different acoustic characteristics, initial time delay, early reflection, and late reverberation. This paper introduces new learning hybrid model for the room impulse response. In this proposed model, those three parts are modeled using different models with learning algorithms that determine the length or boundary of each model in the hybrid model. By the simulation with measured room impulse responses, it was examined that the performance of proposed model shows the best efficiency in views of both the parameter numbers and modeling error.

  • Evaluation of the acoustic nasal geometry is obtained by estimating impulse response due to the nasal geometry. Conventionally, the Wiener filtering method proposed by Hunt has been used for estimating impulse response. In this paper, we proposed the Weiner filtering method using noise-to-signal power ratio for estimating impulse response. In result, the proposed method in this paper is effective than the conventional method.

  • In this paper we investigate the properties of a generalized impulse response Gramian. The recursive relationship satisfied by the family of Gramians is established. It is shown that the generalized impulse response Gramian contains information on the characteristic polynomial of a linear time-invariant continuous system. The results are applied to model reduction problem.

  • The nerve impulse pattern of Chorda tympani(CT) of cat was tested with Monosodium glutamate(MSG) solutions as well as some basic taste substances applied on the tongue of cat. The effect of MSG applied in the tongue prior to the stimulation of other taste substances was also investigated. The response impulse frequency of CT of cat was changed by the kind and concentration of taste substances. The response to citric acid was the highest among the tested substances, NaCl, KCl and MSG showed similar responses. When different concentrations of MSG were applied on the tongue prior to other substances, the response to NaCl increased with the maximum response at the MSG concentration of 0.02 M. The response to sucrose tended to be reduced, but the response to citric acid was distinctly supressed by the previous MSG stimulation. These results were well consistent with the sensory evaluation on the effect of MSG to some basic taste substances. previously reported by the authors.

  • In this paper, a new method for identification of two-dimensional(2D) impulse response is presented. As is well known, identification of 2D impulse response is an important and necessary theme for image processing or signal processing. Here, the authors extend M-transform which has been proposed by some of the authors to 2D case where an image is used instead of signal, and M-array is used instead of M-sequence. Firstly, we show that 2D impulse response can be obtained by use of M-array. Next 2D M-transform is defined where any 2D image can be considered to be the output of 2D filter whose input is 2D M-array. Simulation results show the effectiveness of identification of 2D impulse response by either using M-array or by 2D M-transform.

  • Recently a method of model reduction for discrete systems has been proposed in the literature based on a new impulse response Gramian. In this method, the system matrix$A_r$ of a reduced model is computed by approximating the reduced-order impulse response Gramian. The remaining matrices $b_r$ and $c_r$ are obtained so that various initial Markov parameters and time-moments of the original system are preserved in the reduced model. In this paper a different approach is presented based on the recursive relationship among the impulse response Gramians.

  • This paper presents an impulse response of the multi-path channel using KS-GCR(Korean Standard Ghost Cancel Reference) signal. Using the property of the KS-GCRsignal, we can get the impulse response of the multi-path channel from circular cross correlation of the received DS-GCR signal and the orginal KS-GCR ternary sequence. Therefore impulse response of the multi-path channel can be used to design the the ghost cancellation filter if it is designed to have inverse characteristics of multi-path channel. This paper shows that the ghost occurred from the multi-path channel can be cancelled by using the impulse response and preceding ghost cancellation algorithm.
