Application of Systems Engineering for Improving the Design Process of Public Halls (공공 홀의 설계 프로세스 향상을 위한 시스템 엔지니어링 적용)

  • The major challenge of designing public halls or performing arts centers in Japan is meeting the expectations of the regional community; greater stakeholder involvement is required in order to solve this problem. The purpose of this paper is to examine whether stakeholders can become more involved in public hall design by using systems engineering (SE), which has never before been applied when designing public halls. As such, this study redesigned an actual public hall (Iwaki Alios) using an SE approach. The results revealed that applying SE was effective in the creation of a public hall concept.

Human Factors Design Review of CFMS for Improving the Safety of Nuclear Power Plant (원전의 안전성 제고를 위한 CFMS의 인간공학적 설계 검토)

  • In order to improve the safety of nuclear power plant, we performed a human factors review for the CFMS(Critical Function Monitoring system) design of nuclear power plant. Three works were performed in this study. In first work, we developed human factors engineering program plan(HFEPP) and human factors engineering verification and validation plan (HFE-V & V plan) to effectively perform CFMS design and review. In second work, we identified human engineering discrepancies(HEDs) for CFMS design through human factors design review and proposed those resolutions. In the third work, we developed the evaluation and management methodology for identified KEDs. Methodology developed in this study can be used in other complex system as well as in CFMS design review.

Circular Polarizers for Reflective LCDs

  • Characteristics of reflective LCDs, which have gained a lot of notice in recent years, rely largely on optical design of circular polarizers and the quarter-wave plates, as a component. Important design includes wavelength dispersion, viewing angle, uniformity of display and matching of refractive index. Our work has contributed to improving performance of reflective LCDs by enhancing the characteristics of polymer film using stretching and optical lamination technologies. To design that offers higher contrast and wider viewing angle, we have discovered that it is necessary to control viewing angle variation of the polarizing axis in order to compensate for the viewing angle of the polarizing film as well as the optical anisotropic properties of liquid crystal. Applying this technology to circular polarizers used for reflective LCDs enables design of wide viewing angle circular polarizers. In order to realize higher contrast for reflective LCDs, it is also necessary to design other optical materials including polarizing films. For design of hybrid optical film, it is particularly necessary to reduce surface reflection and interface reflection. This paper also reports our findings concerning this topic.

A Web Design Modeling System to Improve Communication between Web Designers and Programmers

  • Web development has multidisciplinary features involving diverse team members. Owing to the diverse backgrounds, however, there may be communication problems among web team members, especially between designers and programmers. Programmers often use a graphical modeling notation to communicate their designs. The graphical modeling concepts can also be helpful to designers, but most designers generally find graphical modeling notations hard to understand. We, therefore, propose an interactive computer-aided collaborative web design system including revised web graphical model notations to improve communication between web designers and programmers. We have designed and implemented a computational prototype to validate the approach and illustrate how the prototype works using concrete examples.

  • The three design elements of automobile occupant packaging such as pedals, steering wheel, and seat are the most important factors to design an ergonomically sound layout for improving driving comfort and performance. The aim of the study is to find out coherent characteristics of the relationships among three design elements. For this purpose, Triangular Method is suggested. We extracted properties for determining the shape, size, and location of the triangle that is composed of Accelerated Heel Point, Steering Wheel Point, and Hip Point. An experiment was conducted at a seating buck in which the design elements are freely adjustable by the subject to investigate driver's preferred arrangement of three elements. Statistical analyses revealed that there was a subtle change in the shape of triangle according to different percentiles and that the significant difference was observed only for the size of the triangle. The results will be effectively applied to design a comfortable seat packaging layout.

  • HDL(Hardware Description Language) is the most important modem tools used to describe hardware, and becomes important as we move to higher levels of abstraction. The HDL has been made brisk use of in analog design, MEMS device[1-2], process related field as well as digital design. The most important characteristics of HDL is Abstraction which is the strongest tool that extend greatly designer's design ability. In this paper by the Modelling Continuum with hierarchical structure of abstraction, we apply UML(Unified Modeling Language) to SoC Design with HDL UML makes an easy and visual description of the various levels of abstraction, and gives designers good flexible modeling capabilty for SoC Design.

  • In this study, development of 3D software for automated formwork design was conducted to achieve optimization and reduction of labor for temporary work. Through the literature review, the current technical level was identified and the required functions of 3D software for automated formwork design were derived. The 3D software should be developed with the aim of automating 3D design, improving construction quality and utilizing the Internet of Things. As a preliminary step to develop 3D software, the prototype demo version was developed to implement 3D design automation function, which confirm the possibility of 3D software development.

  • ABEEK's professional liberal arts education reflecting critical thinking, has been well received by professors and students in the engineering discipline. Also, the demand for further utilization of critical thinking within the engineering curriculum is increasing. To meet such demand, there is a need for experts in the area of critical thinking education and engineering education to come together and search for the most effective method in using critical thinking in engineering design education courses. In this paper, we were able to confirm, through specific application cases, that the problem-solving process of critical thinking can be effectively transferred to an engineering design process, and the elements and criteria of critical thinking can be used as a successful design tool. Also, we explore the possibility of further improving engineering education on the basis of critical thinking.

  • Many construction activities are related because they share the information of working methods and resources. Generally, the design information for coupled activities needs to be constantly collaborated in the different teams. To achieve the improvement in team collaboration, it is necessary to identify the relative coupled activities in the design teams. The activity and work partitioning arrangements are also required to accommodate the appropriate team members. This paper presents an integral method to be an evaluation in improving the collaboration for teams partitioning. A model, Team Partitioning Method (TPM) was developed to clarify the relationships between activities in a team. The results show the applicability of TPM model in team partitioning for design collaboration.

  • This letter presents an antenna design method for an orthogonally-polarized dual antenna for use in mobile stations (MSs) and includes a verification method for improving the link-level throughput performance of an MS that uses a proposed multiple-input multiple-output antenna. The link-level throughput performance of an MS is strongly related to the correlation between antenna branches, which is determined by the cross polarization discrimination of the second branch antenna, both numerically and experimentally.
