  • This study aims to develop an BCI speller utilizing eye-closed and double-blinking EEG based on asynchronous mechanism. The proposed system comprised a signal processing module and a graphical user interface (virtual keyboard-VK) with 26 English characters plus a special symbol. A detected "eye-closed" event induces the "select" command, whereas a "double-blinking" (DB) event functions the "undo" command. A three-class support vector machine (SVM) classifier involving EEG signal analysis of three groups of events ("eye-open"-idle state, "eye-closed", and "double -blinking") is proposed. The results showed that the proposed BCI could achieve an overall accuracy of 92.6% and a spelling rate of 5 letters/min on average. Overall, this study showed an improvement of accuracy and the spelling rate resulting from in the feasibility and reliability of implementing a real-world BCI speller.

  • In this study, we propose a new procedure for improving the character recognition of text area extracted from video images. The recognition of strings extracted from video, which are mixed with Hangul, English, numbers and special characters, etc., is more difficult than general character recognition because of various fonts and size, graphic forms of letters tilted image, disconnection, miscellaneous videos, tangency, characters of low definition, etc. We improved the recognition rate by taking commonly used letters and leaving out the barely used ones instead of recognizing all of the letters, and then using SVM and RDA character recognition methods. Our numerical results indicate that combining SVM and RDA performs better than other methods.

  • As a major factor for efficient management and retrieval of the articles in databases, keywords are classified into uncontrolled keywords and controlled keywords. Most of Korean scholarly databases fail to provide controlled vocabularies to indexing research articles which help users to retrieve relevant papers exhaustively. In this paper, we carried out automatic descriptor assignment experiments to Korean articles using automatic classifiers learned with descriptors in international database. The results of the experiments show that the classifier learning with descriptors in international database can potentially offer controlled vocabularies to Korean scholarly articles having English s. Also, we sought to improve the performance of automatic descriptor assignment using various classifiers and combination of them.
