  • This study was carried out to investigate characteristics of plywood overlaid with softwood veneers densified by resin impregnation and compression. The resin impregnability of Korean pine veneer under atmospheric pressure soaking was greater than that of larch, and impregnability of melamine resin was slightly greater than phenolic resin. It was suggested that resin impregnation ratio was affected by density and thickness of veneer. The largest melamine resin impregnation ratio of 50.7% was obtained with 1.26mm thick Korean pine veneer, and the lowest phenolic resin impregnation ratio of 11.7% with 3.41mm thick larch veneer. Therefore, it was suggested that the vacuum-pres sure-soak treatment is required at thick larch veneer. In densifying resin-impregnated veneers, densification ratio from 13.4 to 31.2% was obtained by high pressure from 15.6 to $20.8kgf/cm^2$. Impregnation of melamine resin also showed relatively greater at densification than that of phenolic resin. So it showed the degree of densification of about 20% or greater. It was seemed that adhesive bonding strength of plywood(base panel) which was directly pressed and overlaid with resin-impregnated veneer was affected by resin tackiness after resin impregnation followed by semi-drying. In laboratory scale, melamine resin impregnation was more favorable for the development of adhesive bonding strength owing to moisture control.

  • Boron compound had many advantages as wood preservative, but it was prone to leaching. Improving boron preservation was required to extend the service life of fast growing and low durability red jabon (Antochephalus macrophyllus) hardwood. This study aimed to evaluate the dimensional stability, color change and durability of modified red jabon wood by double impregnation with boron and methyl methacrylate (MMA) and heat treatment. Impregnation I used boric acid or borax, and impregnation II used MMA, while heat treatment used temperatures of 90 ℃ or 180 ℃ for 4 hours. The dimensional stability, leachability, water absorption, color change and decay resistance of modified red jabon wood were tested. The results showed that MMA impregnation increased the dimensional stability of red jabon wood, while the leaching and water absorption in the wood significantly reduced. Heating at 180 ℃ caused less water absorption and higher dimensional stability of the wood than that of heating at 90 ℃. Impregnation with boric acid and MMA followed by heating at 90 ℃ resulted in the highest wood ASE, 89.9%. The color change (∆E*) of wood increased significantly after MMA impregnation and heating at 180 ℃. Boric acid impregnation caused more resistant wood than borax impregnation against decay fungi and termites. Impregnation with boric acid and MMA followed with heating at 180 ℃ increased significantly the wood resistance against decay fungi and termites.

  • Impregnation of molten thermoplastic resin into continuous unidirectional fiber bundles was investigated. The degree of impregnation is defined as the ratio between the number of impregnated fibers and the total number of fibers of a bundle. The degree of impregnation was modeled as a function of time, impregnation pressure, temperature and tow size assuming the radial inward flow through the fiber bundle is governed by the Darcy's law. The permeability was assumed to be constant. Experiments were performed to evaluate the validity of the medel. Today's T300 graphite fiber bundles and Polyetheretherketone(PEEK) resin was used. A fiber bundle and resin powder were put into a mold and pressure and temperature were applied. After a predetermined time, the sample was taken out and microphotographs of the cross-section were taken. From the microphotographs, the number of impregnated fibers was counted and then the degree of impregnation was determined. Experiments were also performed for different tow sizes. Good agreements were found between the model and the experiments rendering a confidence in the model.

  • Ultramicrofiber(UMF) PET knitted fabric and regular PET plain woven fabric as reference sample were impregnated with waterborne polyurethane(PU) in a two-step process with dyeing/PU treatment and PU treatment/dyeing to investigate the effect of the treatment sequence. The waterborne PU impregnated fabrics were dyed with two kinds of vat and disperse dyes to investigate the dyeing properties and the dyeing fastnesses. In vat dyeing the rank of color strength(K/S) was in order of dyeing/PU impregnation > dyeing only > PU impregnation/dyeing, whereas in case of disperse dyeing, the order was dyeing/PU impregnation > PU impregnation/dyeing >dyeing only. Wash fastness of vat dyeing showed a higher 2-3 grade than disperse dyeing, while rubbing and light fastnesses were not good for disperse dyes.

  • Ultrastructure of adult Drosophila ocellus was compared with conventional electron microscopic method and osmium impregnation. When osmium impregnation was applied, some organelles of cells were strongly stained. Especially, subrhabdomeric cisternae (SRC) were strongly stained and showed network-iike structure as in compound eye. Other organelles including SSC, ER, nuclear envelope, pigment granules and mitochondria were also strongly stained. These organelles are known as a general calcium ion reservoir. In conclusion, the strong effect of light and shade by osmium impregnation was regarded as a result of strong binding between calcium ion and osmium tetroxide. Thus, we agree to the opinion that osmium impregnation is very useful methods to the comparative morphology of cell organelles.

  • In molding of continuous fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites, it is very difficult to impregnate between the reinforcements and the matrix since the matrix has a high melting temperature and high viscosity. Therefore, most of composite molding processes are divided in the manufacturing processes of intermediate materials called prepreg and the forming of products from intermediate materials. The divided process requires additional facilities and thermoforming, and they increase the cycle time and cost of composite products. These problems can be resolved by combining the continuous fiber-reinforced composite molding process with injection molding. However, when a composite material is manufactured by inserting woven fabric into the injection mold, poor impregnation occurs on the surface of the molded product. It affects the properties of the composites. In this paper, through an impregnation experiment using cores with different heat transfer rates and pore densities, the reason for the poor impregnation was confirmed, and molding experiments were conducted to produce composite with improved surface impregnation by inserting the mesh. And also, the surface impregnation and deformation of composites molded using different types of mesh were compared with each other.

  • For hydrogen-vehicle applications (air pressure control valve housing, APCVH), an investigation was conducted to determine how micro-defects in a high- pressure die-casted Al alloy (industrial code: ALDC12) could be controlled by means of a post-treatment using an organic-based impregnation solution in order to improve the air- tightness of the die-casted Al sample. Two different impregnation solutions were proposed and its test results were compared to a imported product from Japan with respect to the processing variables used. A structural investigation of the components under study was conducted by means of computer tomography and 3D X-ray micro-CT. These observations revealed that the use of the impregnation treatment to seal micro-defects led to highly significant and beneficial changes which were attributed mainly to interconnections among inherent micro-pores. A leak test after impregnation revealed that the performance improvement rate of the die-casted Al sample was ~70% for INNO-01. Therefore, the developed impregnation solutions offer an effective strategy to control the micro-defects found in various vehicle parts via die-casting.

  • A large diameter roundwood is an important element of Korean traditional buildings, Hanok, and is hard to be dried without surface cracks. Four different pretreatments, such as pre-cracking, oil heating, kerfing-oil heating and PEG impregnation, were investigated for reducing the surface cracks of large-diameter roundwood specimens during heat treatment. The roundwood specimens of pre-cracking, oil heating and kerfing-oil heating showed surface cracks during pretreatment, but that of PEG impregnation did not. It was confirmed that kerfing reduced the total crack width. Among the four pretreatments and control only the PEG impregnation roundwood specimen had no crack on both outer and inner surfaces after heat treatment. The PEG impregnation specimen shrank only 1.6% in the tangential direction while the pre-cracking did 8.0%.

  • Characterization of an ultra precision grinding plate for GMR head manufacturing is performed by measuring frictional forces between the grinding plate and the advanced ceramic Two kinds of methods of producing the precision grinding plates are presented: texturing and micro-channeling. Texturing is effective in terms of production time but micro-channeling excels in quality control. It is found that the frictional coefficient of a precision grinding plate decreases as the impregnation of diamond grain onto the precision-grinding plate progresses, and remains unchanged once the impregnation process is successfully completed, even after 100 revolutions of the precision-grinding plate against the advanced ceramic under 40 N of normal force. Therefore, the measurement of the frictional coefficient can replace costly and time-consuming process of estimating the level of impregnation of diamond grain on the precision-grinding plate, which has been performed by using scanning electron microscope, and be employed as an index to determine the level of impregnation of diamond grain.
