  • This paper presents the development of a control architecture for the autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) with VARIVEC (variable vector) propeller. Moreover this paper also describes the new technique of controlling the servomotors using the Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). The AUVs are being currently used fur various work assignments. For the daily measuring task, conventional AUV are too large and too heavy. A small AUV will be necessary for efficient exploration and investigation of a wide range of a sea. AUVs are in the phase of research and development at present and there are still many problems to be solved such as power resources and underwater data transmission. Further, another important task is to make them smaller and lighter for excellent maneuverability and low power. Our goal is to develop a compact and light AUV having the intelligent capabilities. We employed the VARIVEC propeller system utilizing the radio control helicopter elements, which are swash plate and DC servomotors. The VARIVEC propeller can generate six components including thrust, lateral force and moment by changing periodically the blade angle of the propeller during one revolution. It is possible to reduce the number of propellers, mechanism and hence power sources. Our control tests were carried out in an anechoic tank which suppress the reflecting effects of the wall surface. We tested the developed AUV with required performance. Experimental results indicate the effectiveness of our approach. Control of VARIVEC propeller was realized without any difficulty.

  • Numerous types of sporting events have been hosted in Korea during the last decades. Sport events produce various types of data, and there is a clear necessity of storing and utilizing this information. From this background, the purpose of this study is to draw complex sports categories from international sport events life cycles in order to categorize standards of knowledges management system. This study utilized qualitative methods: expert groups discussion for overall life cycle steps and in-depth interviews for detail life cycle steps. The results show that there are several life cycle steps: bidding, preparation, operation, evaluation, post management steps. To be more specific, for the bidding step, there are check, plan, implementing detail phase; and the preparation step is based on event preparation Basis Build, event preparation implementation, test and supplementation phases. For the operation step, event operation system switch, event operation during the period, finish operation phases are deducted. Evaluation and post management step do not have detail phases. Efforts to store and utilize knowledge can be one of the starting points to make the operation of sport events efficiently.

  • In order to help decision-makers in the early design phase to improve and make more cost-efficient system safety and reliability baselines of aircraft design concepts, a method (Multi-objective Optimization for Safety and Reliability Trade-off) that is able to handle trade-offs such as system safety, system reliability, and other characteristics, for instance weight and cost, is used. Multi-objective Optimization for Safety and Reliability Trade-off has been developed and implemented at SAAB Aeronautics. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate how the implemented method might work to aid the selection of optimal design alternatives. The method is a three-step method: step 1 involves the modelling of each considered target, step 2 is optimization, and step 3 is the visualization and selection of results (results processing). The analysis is performed within Architecture Design and Preliminary Design steps, according to the company's Product Development Process. The lessons learned regarding the use of the implemented trade-off method in the three cases are presented. The results are a handful of solutions, a basis to aid in the selection of a design alternative. While the implementation of the trade-off method is performed for companies, there is nothing to prevent adapting this method, with minimal modifications, for use in other industrial applications.

  • Spectral Amplitude Coding Optical Code Division Multiple Access (SAC OCDMA) is an advanced technique in asynchronous environments. This paper proposes design and implementation of a novel quantum logic gate (QLG) code, with code construction algorithm generated without following any code mapping procedures for SAC system. The proposed code has a unitary matrices property with maximum overlap of one chip for various clients and no overlaps in spectra for the rest of the subscribers. Results indicate that a single algorithm produces the same length increment for codes with weight greater than two and follows the same signal to noise ratio (SNR) and bit error rate (BER) calculations for a higher number of users. This paper further examines the performance of a QLG code based SAC-OCDMA system with NAND and direct detection techniques. BER analysis was carried out for the proposed code and results were compared with existing MDW, RD and GMP codes. We demonstrate that the QLG code based system performs better in terms of cardinality, which is followed by improved BER. Numerical analysis reveals that for error free transmission (10-9), the suggested code supports approximately 170 users with code weight 4. Our results also conclude that the proposed code provides improvement in the code construction, cross-correlation and minimization of noises.

  • In this paper, we propose the beam-steering system using Rotman lens antenna operating at 2.442GHz which is to replace an expensive phase shifter. The overall system consists of the transmission antennas, Rotman lens and switch box. Setting the initial design conditions, it was designed and fabricated satisfying the requirements. From the result tested in the anechoic chamber, it was found that the beam can be steered using Rotman lens in the anechoic chamber. We also visually checked the beam-steering by turning on the LED of the rectenna showing the real-time beam receiving.

  • This paper describes a testbed that was designed and implemented for the development of KSLV-II onboard equipment simulator. It used the CPCI-based industrial hardware system for scalability and the QNX real-time operating system for reliability and real-time simulation. In addition, a real-time application under QNX for function simulations of the KSLV-I PDU was developed and it was verified through interface experiments with KSLV-I upper-stage test equipment. The implemented simulator testbed will be used to verify the development feasibility in the design and development phase of a real KSLV-II onboard equipment simulator.

  • Research on fuel cell systems attracting attention as an environmentally friendly energy source has been actively conducted. And research is being conducted on railway vehicles that use direct current power generated by a fuel cell as an energy source. In this paper, a two-phase interleaved bidirectional DC-DC converter has been proposed which can supply electric energy of a battery to a traction motor during powering and charge the battery with regenerative energy during braking. Therefore, the topology of the energy storage system applied to the railway vehicle was analyzed, and the simulation was performed by constructing the power conversion system by this topology. Experiments were also conducted through hardware design and fabrication based on the simulation analysis results, and the validity of the hardware implementation was verified.

  • The characteristics of flow past a square cylinder submerged under the free surface have been numerically studied. An immersed boundary method was adopted for implementation of the cylinder cross-section in a Cartesian grid system. Also, a level-set method was used to capture the interface of the two fluids. The case for Reynolds number 150 was examined. At the specific Reynolds number, by varying the gap ratio(0.25, 0.40, 0.55, 0.70, 1.00, 1.50, 2.50, 5.00) the effects of the free surface on the force coefficients and Strouhal number of vortex shedding were identified. The presence of the free surface very close to the cylinder significantly affects the shedding pattern, resulting in considerable deviation of the force coefficients and Strouhal number from those of the single-phase flow. In addition, the influence of Froude number was considered in this study. By increasing Froude number(0.2-0.4), flow topology change was identified at the specific gap ratios(0.40, 0.70, 1.50, 5.00).

  • In order for a classification system to be useful in every day business environments, it has to reflect peculiar characteristics of enterprises and organizations. By automating the generation process of classification, the overall operation of classification system becomes effective and efficient. However, in order for it to be really useful, human input and interventions are needed from the very beginning phase of the classification generation. This paper proposes an user-guided classification generation algorithm, in which the user inputs a specific level of the classification that she/he wants. Also we propose and implement manipulation operators to tailor the initial classification into the shape that user wants.

  • In this paper, the frequency monitoring system for the small AC generator having two or more generator is designed and implemented to synchronize a voltage, phase and frequency for stable power supply. CT sensor is used to measure the amount of current flowing in the power line, and PT sensor is used to measure the amount of voltage across the power line. The experimental results show that the power frequency can be measured using the power frequency monitoring system developed in this paper. The frequency monitoring system proposed in this paper will be able to control the power generation system using two or more small generator efficiently.
