An analytical solution of the fully coupled system of equations governing the plane strain deformation of a poroelastic medium with anisotropic permeability and compressible fluid and solid constituents is obtained. This solution is used to study the consolidation of a poroelastic clay layer with free permeable surface resting on a rough-rigid permeable or impermeable base. The stresses and the pore pressure are taken as the basic state variables. Displacements are obtained by integrating the coupled constitutive relations. The case of normal surface loading is discussed in detail. The solution is obtained in the Laplace-Fourier domain. Two integrations are required to obtain the solution in the space-time domain which are evaluated numerically for normal strip loading. Consolidation of the clay layer and diffusion of pore pressure is studied for both the bases. It is found that the time settlement is accelerated by the permeability of the base. Initially, the pore pressure is not affected by the permeability of the base, but has a significant effect, as we move towards the bottom of the layer. Also, anisotropy in permeability and compressibilities of constituents of the poroelastic medium have a significant effect on the consolidation of the clay layer.
The characteristics of steady two-dimensional laminar boundary layer flow of a viscous and incompressible fluid past a moving wedge with suction or injection are theoretically investigated. The transformed boundary layer equations are solved numerically using an implicit finite-difference scheme known as the Keller-box method. The effects of Falkner-Skan power-law parameter (m), suction/injection parameter ($f_0$) and the ratio of free stream velocity to boundary velocity parameter (${\lambda}$) are discussed in detail. The numerical results for velocity distribution and skin friction coefficient are given for several values of these parameters. Comparisons with the existing results obtained by other researchers under certain conditions are made. The critical values of $f_0$, m and ${\lambda}$ are obtained numerically and their significance on the skin friction and velocity profiles is discussed. The numerical evidence would seem to indicate the onset of reverse flow as it has been found by Riley and Weidman in 1989 for the Falkner-Skan equation for flow past an impermeable stretching boundary.
Recently, Korea brings to remarkable levels about industrialization, modernization, population and development of technology. Especially, the rapidly growing from this technology has increased the burden on existing industrial waste landfills. The purpose of this research is to existing knowledge base of landfill cover liner behavior during periods freeze/thaw. Although these tests have been invaluable in clarifying the problem of freeze/thaw, extending the results of such experimental studies to prototype landfills are questionable. For this investigation, the author utilized a large scale laboratory simulation allowing inclusion of the field depth of the cover systems, layered soil profiles, rainfall simulation, a cold climate and boundary conditions similar to those encountered in the landfill. And the soil materials used stabilized soils (mixed clays, cements, and minerals) instead of clays. The bottom liners are made up of drainage layer (30cm), stabilized layer (75cm), and leach collection layer (60cm). The stabilized layers are made up of supporting layer (45cm) and impermeable layer (30cm) - consisted of $P_A$ and $P_B$ layer.
This study was conducted to propose a reasonable requirement regulation of cutoff barriers composed of bottom layer and vertical barrier of offshore landfill for the prevention of contaminant leakage. The bottom layer was composed of impermeable clay layer; vertical walls were composed of double walls; outer wall was composed of steel sheet pile which registed against outer force; cutoff vertical barrier took the role of inner wall. Seepage-advection-dispersion numerical analysis was conducted using SEEP/W and CTRAN/W programs under steady and unsteady flows. The results showed that the values calculated under steady flow showed higher migration of pollutant than those of unsteady flow. The values calculated under steady flow are more valid from a design point of view. Under steady flow and the bottom clay layer and when the vertical barrier are homogeneous and completely well installed, respectively, the minimum required cutoff regulations for hydraulic conductivity, thickness, and embedded depth of the bottom clay layer and vertical barrier were suggested.
This study analyzes contaminant movement under transient flow in a rubble mound revetment offshore waste landfill barrier system that prevents contaminant runoff. The barrier system consists of bottom layer and side barrier. For the bottom layer system, impermeable clay layer is used. For the side barrier system, the HDPE barrier sheet (primary element) plays the main role, and the intermediate protection layer (supplementary element) is responsible for the barrier. Seepage, advection, dispersion numerical analysis was carried out using SEEP / W and CTRAN / W programs. As a result, under abnormal conditions considering the fluctuation in tidal range, the volume and direction of the flow velocity vector of the pore water change with time and the dispersion concentration of the contaminant changes. When comparing the case of 2 m tidal range and 8 m tidal range, the larger the tide value, the higher the concentration of contaminant under abnormal conditions. It was found that the rate of change of the concentration of the contaminant changed depending on the change in the tidal range, and as a result, the outflow of the pollutant was smaller than that in the steady flow state.

A subsurface containment system which is constructed by pumping a gelling liquid (Colloidal Silica) into the unsaturated medium is investigated by developing a mathematical model and conducting numerical simulations. The proposed model is verified by comparing experimentally and numerically determined hydraulic conductivities of gel-treated soil columns at different Colloidal Silica (CS) injection volumes. The numerical experiments indicate that an impermeable gel layer is formed within the time period twice the gel-point. At the Same normalized time, the CS solutions with lower NaCl concentrations result ill further migration and poor Performance in plugging the pore space.
Clothing ventilation was investigated using a manikin wearing an impermeable overall under an isothermal condition, in which the ventilation occurred only through the openings. The ventilation volume was estimated by both microenvironment volume and ventilation rate, where, the microenvironment volume was measured by an air subsitution method and the ventilation rate by a trace gas method. Microenvironment volume of the experimental garment was about 21.0 liters. Even though it was certainly affected by the distance from the opening, the ventilation rate was more significantly influenced by the opening area and the shape of air layer in the clothing. The volume of air exchange in the clothing microenvironment was affected greatly by the microenvironment volume and the opening area, and it was different for each part of the body with bigger air exchange volume in the microenvironment of the leg as compared to that of the arm.
In order to prevent leakage of leachate in offshore landfill, hydraulic barrier is indispensable. In the case of rubble mound revetment at offshore landfill, HDPE sheet in slope should be installed. In this study, seepage analysis were performed to evaluate seepage and flow in the seabed and revetment according to extended length of HDPE sheet by using SEEP/W. Results show that, in the case of low permeability layer is distributed where extended length of HDPE sheet was more than 1m, seepage flux in seabed and revetment was greatly reduced. In order to prevent seepage in seabed and revetment in the case of sand layer of high permeability is existed above low permeable layer, extended length of HDPE sheet and impermeable improvement width of permeable layer should be more than 1m at seabed.

The Iksan Ssangneung (twin tombs), a pair of tombs comprising the Daewangneung (large royal tomb) and the Sowangneung (small royal tomb), were constructed in the typical style of stone tunnel and chamber tombs in the Baekje Kingdom during the Sabi period (538 to 660 AD) of ancient Korea. Soil layers exposed during excavation of Sowangneung in a trench east of the tomb are: the bottommost layer, the ground level layer, the Panchuk (rammed earth) layer of the Baekje, the layer created by a grave robbery, and soil recovered during the Japanese colonial period. Soil samples were obtained by segmenting an easy stratigraphic horizon into sub categorized soil layers, and their material properties were analyzed; they are composed mainly of sandy loam based on the particle size distributions. In the site foundation, loamy sand is packed in the bottommost layer, and sandy loam with high sand and silty sand fills most of the overlying layer. The central and topmost portion of the Baekje layer is composed of loam with high clay content. All soil layers show geochemical behaviors similar to those of the bottommost layer. X-ray diffraction analysis verified kaolinite in all layers, also observed in soil layers displaying high crystallinity. Kaolinite and halloysite were identified by scanning electron microscopy. Thus, we conclude that the Baekje layer of the Sowangneung is composed of sandy loam containing kaolin procured from near the site. An impermeable middle to upper layer was created using viscous loam. The top of the tomb was closed tightly.
Slope failure depends upon the climatic features related to related rainfall, structural geology and geomorphological features as well as the variation of the mechanical behaviors of soil constituting a slope. In this paper, among many variables, effects of soil layer thickness on the slope failure process, and variations of matric suction and volumetric water content were observed. When the soil layer is relatively thick, the descending wetting front decreases matric suction and the observed matric suction reaches to "0" value. When the wetting front reaches to the impermeable boundary, the bottom surface of steel soil box, ascending wetting front was observed. This observation can be postulated to be the effects of various sizes of pores. When macro size pores exist, the capillary effects can be reduced and infilling of pore will be limited. The partially filled pores would be filled with water during the ascending of the wetting front, which bounces from the impermeable boundary. This assumption has been assured from the observation of variation of the volumetric water contents at different depth. When the soil layer is thick (thickness = 20 cm), for granular material, erosion is a cause triggering the slope failure. It has been found that the initiation of erosion occurs when the top soil is fully saturated. Meanwhile, when the soil layer is shallow (thickness = 10 cm), slope slides as en mass. The slope failure for this condition occurs when the wetting front reaches to the interface between the soil layer and steel soil box. As the wetting front approaches to the bottom of soil layer, reduction of shear resistance along the boundary and increase of the unit weight due to the infiltration occur and these produce complex effects on the slope failure processes.
