  • Flows through impellers of centrifugal compressors are calculated by a streamline curvature method. A method for the exit boundary condition is suggested in the present paper. Flow angles are assumed to be deviated from the blade angle parabolically. The maximum deviation is adjusted for the whole angular momentum to balance with the empirically estimated value by using Stanitz' slip-factor. The present method is verified to reasonably simulate flows through the impeller, when the 3-dimensionality of the flow is not strong. It is also shown that the method can be applied for the design of the splitter in the impeller.

  • In this study, a method for optimal design of impeller and diffuser blades in the centrifugal compressor using response surface method (RSM) and multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) was evaluated. A numerical simulation was conducted using ANSYS CFX with various values of impeller and diffuser parameters, which consist of leading edge (LE) angle, trailing edge (TE) angle, and blade thickness. Each of the parameters was divided into three levels. A total of 45 design points were planned using central composite design (CCD), which is one of the design of experiment (DOE) techniques. Response surfaces that were generated on the basis of the results of DOE were used to determine the optimal shape of impeller and diffuser blade. The entire process of optimization was conducted using ANSYS Design Xplorer (DX). Through the optimization, isentropic efficiency and pressure recovery coefficient, which are the main performance parameters of the centrifugal compressor, were increased by 0.3 and 5, respectively.

  • The objective of the present investigation is to explore the possibility of improving the performance of a centrifugal fan at low Reynolds numbers using a simple passive means, namely Gurney flap (GF). GFs of 1/$8^{th}$ inch brass angle (3.175 mm) corresponding to 15.9% of blade exit height or 5.1% of blade spacing at the impeller tip are attached to the impeller blade tip on the pressure surface. Performance tests are carried out on the centrifugal fan with vaneless diffuser at five Reynolds numbers (viz., 0.30, 0.41, 0.55, 0.69, $0.82{\times}10^5$, i.e., at five speeds respectively at 1,100, 1,500, 2,000, 2,500 and 3,000 rpm) without and with GF. Static pressures on the vaneless diffuser hub and shroud are also measured for each speed at four flow coefficients [${\phi}$=0.23 (below design flow coefficient), ${\phi}$=0.34 (design flow coefficient), ${\phi}$=0.45 (above design flow coefficient) and ${\phi}$=0.60 (above design flow coefficient)] with and without GF. From the performance curves it is found that the performance of the fan improves considerably with GFs at lower Reynolds numbers and improves marginally at higher Reynolds number. Similar improvements are observed for the static pressures on the diffuser hub and shroud. The effect of Reynolds number on the performance and static pressures is considerable. However the effect is reduced with GFs.

  • In this paper, the performance characteristics of the impeller and volute in the 2 vane pump were investigated using response surface method (RSM) with commercial computation fluid dynamics (CFD) code. Design variables were defined with the impeller blade angle and volute area distribution. The objective functions were defined as the total head, total efficiency and solid material size of the 2 vane pump. The design optimization of the design variables was determined using the RSM. The numerical results for the reference and optimum models were compared and discussed in this work.

  • Recent trend in pursuit of high performance and effectiveness for automotive cooling system has changed the application of material for impeller of automotive water pump from metal to high ability engineering resin, which can achieve optimization of design of impeller geometry and realize lightweight high efficiency water pump. Closed type water pump improves hydraulic loss of fluid through the clearance between volute casing and impeller compared with that of the existing open type water pump(Although closed type is heavier than open type for the same size and same material, adoption of plastics can solve the problem.). In the present study, the characteristics of hydraulic performance of closed type water pump were investigated with respect to the angle between shroud and hub of impeller and the shape of discharge port of volute casing. Performance tests were carried out for 4 cases, that is, for 2 impellers and 2 casings. The modification of shape of only discharge port can enhance the hydraulic performance by 10 percent and the pump efficiency by 4-6 percent.

  • A cross-flow fan is generally used on the region within the low static pressure difference and the high flow rate. It relatively makes high dynamic pressure at low rotating speed because a working fluid passes through an impeller blade twice and blades have a forward curved shape. At off-design points, there are a rapid pressure head reduction, a noise increase and an unsteady flow. Those phenomena are remarkably influenced by the setting angle of a stabilizer. Therefore, it should be considered how the setting angle of a stabilizer affects on the performance and the flow fields of a cross-flow fan. It is also required to investigate the effect of the volumetric flow rate before occurring stall. Two-dimensional, unsteady governing equations are solved using a commercial code, STAR-CD, which uses FVM. PISO algorithm, sliding grid system and standard k - ε turbulence model are also adopted. Pressure and velocity profiles with various setting angles are graphically depicted. Furthermore, the meridional velocity profiles around the impeller are plotted with different flow rates for a given rotating speed.

  • Centrifugal blowers are widely used for air handling units in industry applications. The blower has a centrifugal impeller and a scroll casing including a driving component such as an electric motor. The impeller takes forward or backward blades to induce flows into the blower, Comprehensive investigation according to the two kinds of blades is systematically carried out for a guidance of design for this kind research. It is observed that flow rate of the blower with forward blades is larger than that of the system with backward blades. Otherwise, the system noise is more pronounced in the case of the blower with forward blades. The reason is due to larger velocity from the rotating forward blades that pose obtuse angle with the circumferential direction. The distinguished characteristics are validated by a parallel experiments with a wind tunnel and in an anechoic chamber. Numerical analysis for the system shows detail information inside the blades and the casing. A series of figures to show the flow details offer deep understanding of the performance of a centrifugal blower with different blades.

  • Stainless steel stamping multistage pump has become the mainstream of civil multi-stage pump. Combined with the technological features of stamping and welding pump, the studies of design for hydraulic parts of pump were come out. An $L_{18}$$3^7$)orthogonal experiment was designed with seven factors and three values including blade inlet angle, impeller outer diameter, guide vane blade number, etc. 18 plans were designed. The two stage of whole flow field on stainless steel stamping multistage pump at design point for design was simulated by CFD. According to the test result and optimization design with experimental research, the trends of main parameters which affect hydraulic performance were got. After being manufactured and tested, the efficiency of the optimal model pump reaches 61.36% and the single head is more than 4.8 m. Compared with the standard efficiency of 53%, the design of the stainless steel stamping pump is successful. The result would be instructive to the design of Stainless steel stamping multistage pump designed by the impeller head maximum approach.

  • Mini centrifugal pumps having a diameter smaller than 100mm are employed in many fields. But the design method for the mini centrifugal pump is not established because the internal flow condition for these small-sized fluid machines is not clarified and conventional theory is not suitable for small-sized pumps. Therefore, mini centrifugal pumps with simple structure were investigated by this research. Splitter blades were adopted in this research to improve the performance and the internal flow condition of mini centrifugal pump which had large blade outlet angle. The original impeller without the splitter blades and the impeller with the splitter blades were prepared for an experiment. The performance tests are conducted with these rotors in order to investigate the effect of the splitter blades on performance and internal flow condition of mini centrifugal pump. On the other hand, a three dimensional steady numerical flow analysis is conducted with the commercial code (ANSYS-CFX) to investigate the internal flow condition in detail. It is clarified from experimental results that the performance of the mini centrifugal pump is improved by the effect of the splitter blades. Blade-to-blade low velocity regions are suppressed in the case with the splitter blades and total pressure loss regions are decreased. The effects of the splitter blades on the performance and the internal flow condition are discussed in this paper.

  • This paper presents a design optimization for meridional profile and blade angle ${\theta}$ of a centrifugal compressor with DOE (design of experiments) and RSM (response surface method). Control points of the $3^{rd}$ order Bezier curve are used for design parameters and specific overall efficiency is used as object function. The response surface function shows good agreement with the 3D computational results. Three different optimized designs are proposed and compared with reference design at design point and off-design point. Contours of relative Mach number, static entropy, and total pressure are analyzed for improvement of performance by optimization. Off-design performance analysis is conducted by total pressure and efficiency.
