  • In this study, the effects of the impeller shapes on the pump performances of the non-clogging and the screw-type centrifugal pumps are experimentally studied. The characteristics of total head, efficiency and power of the non-clogging pump increase as the number of vanes increases. The screw-type centrifugal pump with the linear-shape vane shows a little better performance than that of the screw-type centrifugal pump with the curved-shape vane. The differences in the characteristics of total head, efficiency and power are, however, insignificant. Therefore, it is advisable that, considering the convenience of pump manufacturing, the screw-type centrifugal pump with the linear-shape vane should be used. This study also compares the pump characteristics of the non-clogging pump and screw-type centrifugal pump. The characteristics of total head and efficiency of the non-clogging pump are better than those of the screw-type centrifugal pump. The screw-type centrifugal pump requires more shaft power than the non-clogging pump.

  • A special usage impeller pump for ballast water treatment is part of an offshore plant's structure. It has to maintain a high corrosion resistance in an extreme environment, in which it can contact several kinds of aqueous solutions. The duplex stainless steel used in such severe environments is known to have corrosion resistance and excellent mechanical properties. This study estimated the performance of an impeller pump system designed using duplex stainless steel through a computational fluid dynamics analysis. As a result, it was determined that the pressure drop increases and the impeller performance is lowered if the equivalent roughness is enlarged. The surface precision of the duplex stainless steel must be consistently maintained. If thisis the case, it was determined that the existing STS steel can be substituted for the Duplex stainless steel.

  • The rotordynamic fluid forces acting on a closed type impeller in whirling motion were measured and the influence of the clearance geometry on the stability of the impeller was examined. At small positive whirling speed, the rotordynamic forces acted as destabilizing forces for all casings. A small clearance between the shroud of the impeller and the casing caused large fluid force, but did not change the destabilizing region. Radial grooves in the clearance were effective for reducing the fluid forces and destabilizing region due to the reduction of the circumferential velocity without the deterioration of the pump performance. A rotating phenomenon like a rotating stall of the impeller occurred at low flow rate and the resonance between it and the whirling motion led to a sudden increase in force at the whirling speed ratio of 0.7.

  • The optimum condition is defined as one that best suits the purpose of flocculation; the number of small particles should decrease, while that of large particles should increase. The object of this research was to develop a new impeller and substitute for conventional flocculators. The flow characteristics of turbines and hydrofoil type flocculators in turbulent fluids were observed using a standard $k-{\epsilon}$ Model and a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation program-FLUENT. The experiments were performed to compare PBT(Pitched Blade Turbine) flocculator with twisted hydrofoil type flocculators for velocity distribution, and floe formation at conventional water treatment plants in Korea. As a result of the CED solution, twisted hydrofoil types are similar to hydrofoil flocculators for flow characteristics without regard to the twisted angle, On the other hand, it was established that turbine flocculators are greater than hydrofoil flocculators with flow unevenness and dead zone formation. Twisted hydrofoil type-II (Angle $15{\sim}20^{\circ}$) is the most proper impeller for water flocculation from this point of view with a decreasing the dead zone, maintaining of the equivalent energy distribution and a drawing up of the sedimentation substance from the bottom of the flocculation basin.

  • A screw-type centrifugal pump was manufactured to carry solids primarily and its impeller has a wide flow passage. However, the effect of flow passage shape on delay of the choke due to entrained air has not been clarified yet. Moreover, because its impeller has a particular shape, only few studies have tried to clarify the pump performance and details of internal flow pattern of that pump. For that reason, we carried out the pump performance experiment under air-water two-phase flow condition with different impeller tip clearances, pump rotational speeds and void fractions by using a small screw-type centrifugal pump designed to acquire basic data. In a general centrifugal pump, it was reported that loss of pump head from single-phase flow to the choke due to air entrainment new the best efficiency point was large. However, the loss near the best efficient point in a screw-type centrifugal pump became less than that in a general centrifugal pump.

  • The 3-lobes blower has been conventionally made by constructing the impeller with the cross-section of simple arc, and has several problems such as noise, vibration and the oscillation of torque. These are caused by the variation of clearance between both impellers rotating in geared. In the present study, an approach for the design of cross-section of impeller has been proposed to prevent the above problems. The whole cross-section is divided into the concave and convex part. The concave zone is designed by simple arc and the convex zone is modified by the condition that some part of convex zone is always in contact with the other impeller during rotating. A sample design has been carried out and it can be seen that the clearance between both impellers is always uniform and the validity of present work has been verified.

  • The performance of a regenerative pump is affected by many parameters, especially blade shape of impeller, leakage flow in the clearance and head losses at the inlet & outlet. An impeller with J-shape blade was designed and 5 times scale up model was tested at similarity conditions to evaluate the performance. Performance variations with clearance change were executed. The amounts of leakage flow through the clearance were estimated using the one-dimensional leakage flow models and analysis. Main leakage flow is generated through the gap between the impeller and casing. The inlet & outlet head losses were also estimated. Such corrections are very important to evaluate the final performance of the impeller and pump. Cavitation test was also performed at 1,200 rpm. NPSH of the regenerative pump was obtained and growth of cavity within blades was visualized.

  • Mixers are used in various industrial fields where it is necessary to intimately mix two reactants in a short period of time. However, despite their widespread use, complex unsteady flow characteristics of industrial mixers are not systematic investigated. The present study aimed to clarify unsteady flow characteristics induced by various impellers in a tank. Impellers are pitched blade turbine and neo-hydrofoil turbine types. A high speed CCD camera and an Ar-Ion laser for illumination were adopted to clarify the time-dependent flow characteristics of the mixers. The rotating speed of impellers increased from 6Hz to 60Hz by 6Hz. The maximum velocity around PBT impeller is higher than the hydrofoil type impeller. These two types of turbine shows that typical flow characteristics of axial turbine and suitable for mixing high -viscosity materials.
