  • Two-dimensional, angle-resolved LDV(Laser Doppler Velocimetry) measurements of the turbulent rotating flow field in a confined cylinder have been performed. The configurations of interest are flows between a rotating upper disk with a rod attached by a disk or impeller(${\theta}= 90^{\circ},\;45^{\circ}$) and a stationary lower disk in a confined cylinder. The mean flow velocity as well as the turbulent intensity of the flow field have been measured. The results show that the flow is strongly dependent on the position of the impellers or the disk, negligibly affected by the Reynolds number in turbulent flow. It is observed that the mixing effect of the axial flow impeller(${\theta}= 45^{\circ}$) is better than that of the radial flow impeller(${\theta}= 90^{\circ}$) or a disk.

  • This paper presents effects of impeller geometrical parameters on the performance of a centrifugal pump impeller. The effects of meridional parameters and vane plane development parameters on the performance of the impeller were numerically studied using a commercial CFD code and DOE(design of experiments) software. Geometrical parameters in a method of meridional view and vane plane development were selected and defined to generate the 3D impeller shape. The response variables are defined in a total head and efficiency curve with flow rate. The influences of selected design variables on the various objective functions were examined as a result of the calculation using 2k factorial.

  • This paper presents a procedure for the design optimization of a centrifugal compressor. The centrifugal compressor consists of a centrifugal impeller, vaneless diffuser and volute. And, optimization techniques based on the radial basis neural network method are used to optimize the impeller of a centrifugal compressor. The Latin-hypercube sampling of design-of-experiments is used to generate the thirty design points within design spaces. Three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with the shear stress transport turbulence model are discretized by using finite volume approximations and solved on hexahedral grids to evaluate the objective function of the total-to-total pressure ratio. Four variables defining the impeller hub and shroud contours are selected as design variables in this optimization. The results of optimization show that the total-to-total pressure ratio of the optimized shape at the design flow coefficient is enhanced by 2.46% and the total-to-total pressure ratios at the off-design points are also improved significantly by the design optimization.

  • For the purpose of the enhancement of the air conditioner performance and fuel effciency, several cases of centrifugal impeller for passenger car air conditioner have been numerically analyzed by changing central angle of blades and length of outlet for shape optimization of the impeller. Commercial CFD program Fluent 6.3.26 has been used to compute velocity, temperature, pressure and turbulence intensity that can lead numerous results. The central angles of two blades and three cases of outlet length led 4~12% and 3.5~6.4% differences of velocity and flow rate, respectively. The velocity distribution near the blade surface was axisymmetric and had a maximum value of 22.19 m/s and velocity of the vertical direction of the impeller showed linear increase with horizontal direction. At case 3 of oultet length, there existed a a minimum pressure value of -133320 Pa.

A three dimensional computation was conducted changing the main parameters of impeller blade and diffuser shape, respectively, and the design was performed on a basis analysis of result of that. As a result, the Improved shapes show the increase of efficiency in comparison with the existing shape. This study will be used as useful reference data to establish the design concept of the small size turbo-compressor and to improve its performance.

  • Centrifugal pump consists of a axis, a impeller and a spiral casing. The impeller is the most important component in centrifugal pump. But to minimize flow loss in discharge passage including spiral casing, the shape of spiral casing is very important also. So, to investigate the effect of shape of the spiral casing on performance curve of pump, the characteristics of spiral casing were studied through numerical analysis for centrifugal pump used on industry field. From the results the rectangular model was showed more loss than the others because of asymmetric flow field.

  • In this study, flow structure in a two-stage centrifugal compressor for a turbo-chiller with the refrigerant, R134a, was numerically investigated at the design point of the compressor using a commercial code. Flow characteristics in the passages of impeller, diffuser and return channel were analyzed in detail including velocity vector, secondary flow, Mach number and pressure contours in blade spanwise and meridional plane for each stage. The estimation on the one-dimensional output from the preliminary design and three-dimensional shape of the impeller blade and the meridional shape of the return channel were performed through the flow analysis, while some numerical schemes and techniques including Multiple Frames of Reference technique, real gas property data and inlet boundary condition changes, which were used in CFD, were compared with their features. The results will be used as reference data for a new design of 3-D impeller shape to improve R134a compressor performance.

  • A cross-flow fan consists of an impeller, a stabilizer and a rearguider. When it applied for an air conditioner, an evaporator should be added. It relatively makes high dynamic pressure at low speed because a working fluid passes through an impeller blade twice and blades have a forward curved shape. Therefore, the performance of a cross-flow fan is influenced 25% by the impeller, 60% by the rearguider and the stabilizer, 15% by the heat exchanger. At the low flow rate, there are a rapid pressure head reduction, a noise increase and an unsteady flow against a stabilizer and a rearguider. Moreover, the reciprocal relation between the impeller and the flow passage is the important factor for performance improvement of the cross-flow tan because each parameter is independent. The performance characteristics in the cross-flow fan are graphically depicted with various impeller outlet angles and rearguiders.
