This research investigates the bending properties to predict the work-energy to maximum load and impact bending energy from static bending and impact bending test. Specimens were prepared from lumber made of thinning crop-trees. Matched specimens were used for MC 12% and green moisture specimens to measure the effect of moisture content on the absorbed energy from static and impact bending tests. The bending properties such as MOE, MOR, etc. is a good predictor to investigate the work-energy and work-energy per unit volume from static bending and impact bending test. The impact bending energy is increased with increasing moisture content. However, the work to maximum load from static bending test is increasing with increasing the MC only for higher density species.
Impact behaviors of the large deformable composites of Kevlar fiber reinforced composites of different preform structures have been investigated. An analytic tool was developed to characterize the impact behavior of the Kevlar composites. The image analysis technique, and deply technique were employed to develop energy balance equation under impact loading. An energy method was employed to establish the impact energy absorption mechanism of Kevlar multiaxial warp knitted composites. The total impact energy was classified into four categories including delamination energy, membrane energy, bending energy and rebounding energy under low velocity impact. Membrane and bending energy were calculated from the image analysis of the deformed shape of impacted specimen and delamination energy was calculated using the deplying technique. Also, the impact behavior of Kevlar composites under high velocity impact of full penetration of the composite specimen was studied. The energy absorption mechanisms under high velocity impact were modelled and the absorbed energy was classified into global deformation energy, shear-out energy, deformation energy and fiber breakage energy. The total energy obtained from the model corresponded reasonably well with the experimental results.
This study was carried out to investigate the mechanical properties of woods treated with 30% aqueous solution of PEG 1000. Compressive, bending and shearing strengths were slightly decreased by PEG treatment. Absorbed energy in impact bending did not show any significant differences between untreated and PEG-treated woods.
Potential applications of foam-filled section are the automotive structures. A foam-filled section can be used for the front rail and firewall structures to absorb impact energy during frontal or side collision. In the case of side collision where bending is involved in the crushing mechanics, the foam filler will be significant in maintaining progressive crushing of the thin-walled structures so that more impact energy can be absorbed. In this study, the manufacturing process of closed cell aluminum alloy foam filled stainless steel tube was studied, and the various foam filled specimens including piecewise fillers were prepared, tested and discussed about the bending behaviors.

Although handicapped by the inability to bridge the size gap between small laboratory sample and large engineering component, the V charpy test sample method does possess certain advantages, such as each of preparation, simplicity of test method, speed, low cost in test machinery, and low cost per test. On the other hand, the COD test method does posses advantages, which reduce the size gap between the laboratory sample and actual engineering component. Consequently, the correlation between V charpy absorbed energy and the critical COD value is required for estimating critical COD value from the simple V charpy test results. In this paper, the high tensile strength steel AH36 plate specimens having a single edge cracked notch were investigated to find out the correlation between V charpy absorbed energy and critical COD value in the welded parts under such various welding methods as shielded metal arc welding, the submerged arc welding and the electro gas welding by means of V charpy impact test and static 3-point bending test. Main results obtained are as follow ; 1. The relationships between V charpy absorbed energy Wc' and critical COD value ($\delta_c$)show; $\delta_c$=0.0065 Wc'+0.1906. 2. Ductile- brittle transition behaviours can be estimated by means of fracture appearance and general yielding behaviours. 3. The V charpy absorbed energy of SMAW is higher than that of SAW, EGW and similar relationships are obtained in the COD tests.

The foam-filled tube beams can be used for the front rail and firewall structures to absorb impact energy during frontal or side collision of vehicles. In the case of side collision where bending is involved in the crushing mechanism, the foam filler would be effective in maintaining progressive crushing of the thin-walled structures so that much impact energy could be absorbed. In this study, bending behaviors of the closed-cell-aluminum-alloy-foam-filled stainless steel tube were investigated. The various foam-filled specimens including piecewise fillers were prepared and tested. The aluminum-alloy-foam filling offered the significant increase of bending resistance. Their suppression of the inward fold formation at the compression flange as well as the multiple propagating folds led to the increase of load carrying capacity of specimens. Moreover, the piecewise foams would provide the easier way to fill the thin-walled shell structures without the drawback of strength.

Fracture toughness is an important parameter in designing offshore structures to ensure resistance to fracture at various temperatures. In this study, a series of experiments is carried out to obtain fracture toughness values (CTOD) of API 2W Gr.50B, welded using FCAW(Flux Cored Arc Weld). In particular, a comparison of absorbed impact energy and CTOD values are made with respect to two different welding groove shapes; double-V-groove and double-bevel-groove. Charpy impact tests are performed for specimens sampled near the root gap, and CTOD tests are carried out for three point bending specimens having the notch at weld zone. While Charpy impact test result is determined to be a good qualitative measure of fracture toughness, no quantitative correspondence between impact absorbed energy and CTOD values was found. Based on the experiment, it is observed that double-V-groove welds give lower transition temperature than those of double-bevel-groove.
Physical and mechanical properties of major Korean ash species were examined. For Fraxinus rhynchophylla and Fraxinus sieboldiana, green moisture content of sapwood was almost the same value as heartwood. Heartwood of Fraxinus mandshurica, however, had slightly higher moisture content than sapwood. Green and oven dry densities of F. mandshurica were lower than those of F. rhynchophylla and F. sieboldiana. Swelling and shrinkage of sapwood in F. sieboldiana showed somewhat higher value than those of F. rhynchophylla. Longitudinal compressive strength and modulus of elasticity in F. sieboldiana were lower values than those in the other species. Shearing strength in radial section was higher than that in tangential section of all samples. It could be noted that shearing strength of F. sieboldiana demonstrated higher value than that of the other species. Three species had excellent bending properties in MOR and MOE. Impact bending absorbed energy for F. rhynchophylla and F. mandshurica did not show any significant differences.
The Mechanical and drying characteristics of Pinus densiflora wood, which was damaged by forest fire, and sound wood were examined. There were no significant differences in axial compressive properties, shearing strength and impact bending absorbed energy between damaged and sound woods. But the bending properties of damaged wood were slightly higher than those of sound wood. The green moisture content of sapwood in damaged wood was lower than that in sound wood, but oven-drying rate was similar in both woods. Number of initial check in damaged wood was smaller than that in sound wood, and inner check in damaged and sound woods was not observed. Consequently, it is considered that mostly damaged wood by forest fire can be used for wood material after removing the bark.

This study aims to examine an effect of stacking sequence and curvature on the penetration characteristic of a composite laminated shell. For the purpose, we manufactured specimens with different stacking sequences and curvatures, and conducted a penetration test using an air-gun. To examine an influence according to stacking sequence, as flat plate and curvature specimen had more plies, their critical penetration energy was higher, Critical penetration energies of specimen A and C with less interfaces somewhat higher than those of B and D with more interfaces. The reason that with less interfaces, critical penetration energy was higher is pre-impact bending stiffness of composite laminated shell with less interfaces was lower than that of laminated shell with more interfaces, but bending stiffness after impact was higher. And it is because interface, the weakest part of the composite laminated shell, was influenced by transverse impact. As curvature increases, critical penetration energy increases linearly. It is because as curvature increases, resistance to in-plane deformation as well as bending deformation increases, which need higher critical penetration energy. Patterns of cracks caused by penetration of composite laminated shells include interlaminar crack, intralaminar crack, and laminar fracture. A 0$^{\circ}$ply laminar had a matrix crack, a 90$^{\circ}$ply laminar had intralaminar crack and laminar fracture, and interface between 0$^{\circ}$and 90$^{\circ}$laminar had a interlaminar crack. We examined crack length and delamination area through a penetration test. For the specimen A and C with 2 interface, the longest circumferential direction crack length and largest delamination area were observed on the first interface from the impact point. For the specimen B and D with 4 interface, the longest crack length and largest delamination area were observed on the third interface from the impact point.
