  • This paper reports the results of course restructuring employing design projects in an introductory mechanics of materials course at Pennsylvania State University. Unlike traditional lecture courses, students were encouraged to learn the rudiments of mechanical design and how materials standards, economics, manufacturing, environmental, legal (liability) and societal (safety) concerns relate to design. Through conducting collaborative design projects, the instructors helped students to acquire more advanced skills such as team-based decision making, integration and establishment of criteria, use of modern design theory, consideration of alternative solutions, and application of realistic constraints. In order to examine the impact of new course changes on students' learning, a survey was conducted in 1998 Fall semester. According to the results of survey analyses, students reported high values on this introductory mechanics of materials course. However, they did not give high values on the design projects. Rather, they preferred lecture sessions. Additionally, it was also found that students who earned higher grades from a prerequisite course(statics) showed lower values on the design projects. Implications for engineering educators and suggestions for future research studies were discussed.

  • As the automobile industry is developing, the number of deaths and injuries has increased. To reduce the damages from automobile accidents, the government of each country proposes experimental conditions for reproducing the accident and establishes the vehicle safety regulations. Automotive manufacturers are trying to make safer vehicles by satisfying the requirements. The Hybrid III crash test dummy is a standard Anthropomorphic Test Device (ATD) used for measuring the occupant's injuries in a frontal impact test. Since a real crash test using a vehicle is fairly expensive, a computer simulation using the Finite Element Method (F.E.M.) is widely used. Therefore, a detailed and robust F.E. dummy model is needed to acquire more accurate occupant injury data and behavior during the crash test. To achieve this goal, a detailed F.E. model of the Hybrid III 5th percentile female dummy is constructed by using the reverse engineering technique in this research. A modeling process is proposed to construct the F.E. model. The proposed modeling process starts from disassembling the physical dummy. Computer Aided Design (CAD) geometry data is constructed by three-dimensional (3-D) scanning of the disassembled physical dummy model. Based on the geometry data, finite elements of each part are generated. After mesh generation, each part is assembled with other parts using the joints and rigid connection elements. The developed F.E. model of dummy is simulated based on the FMVSS 572 validation regulations. The results of simulation are compared with the results of physical tests.

  • This study tests homogeneity and performs multiple comparison analysis among treatment levels of each factor group through t-test by materials and analysis of variance by structural type and service period. For that descriptive statistical analysis is performed for static and dynamic response characteristics and their ratios of calculated versus measured values based on a good many safety assessment reports for bridges. Homogeneity and post hoc test based on descriptive statistical analysis provide the measures for homogeneity identification among comparison groups in addition to the statistical reference values such as central tendency, variation and shape. This study is expected to be valuable for structural integrity assessment and design by comparing the measured and calculated values with the reference values for the homogeneous group identified, which can help the engineers review the adequacy of the values and put the group database to practical use.

  • Although it is important to reflect the accurate information of the ground condition in the tunnel design, the analysis and design are conducted by limited information because it is very difficult to get it practically on considering various geography and geotechnical condition. So construction management of information concept is required to manage immediately on the field condition because it is very time-consuming to establish the countermeasure of underground reinforcement and the pattern change of Bo. Therefore, when construction is on tunnel area, examination of accurate safety and prediction of behavior is performed to overcomes the limit of predicting behavior by using Artificial Neural Network(ANN) in this study. Firstly, the field data was secured. Secondly, suitable structure was made on multi-layer perceptrons among the ANN. Thirdly, learning algorithm-propagated applies to ANN. The data for the learn of field application using ANN was used by considering impact factors, which influenced the behavior of tunnel, and performing credibility analysis. crown displacement, spring displacement, subsurfacement, and rock bolt axial force are predicted at the tunnel construction and on-site application was confirmed by using ANN from analyzing and comparing with measurement value of on-site. In this study, the data from Seoul Highway $\bigcirc\bigcirc$ tunnel section was applied to the ANN Theory, and the analysis on the investigate value and the reasoning for the value associated with field application was performed.

  • Recently, not only around Korea but also other countries shows a pattern of arising high-rise building construction project which was delayed or aborted during global economic crises and recession. Although the market starts to stretch, It is getting competitive to win a contract in high-rise construction project between contractors due to lack of competitive advantage especially to Korea contractors. To get that, Korean contractors needs lifting equipment plan. But currently, they depend on the empirical methods and that cause schedule delay, not controlled cost management problem. Therefore, this research is to improve the accuracy of Lifting plan by analyzing the current issues of Lifting plan system and deducing the types of failures with planning factors, as well as analyzing the impact on schedule and cost control and safety management by each failure mode. Also, by analyzing detail risk factors per Lifting Equipment with FMEA, to infer the critical risk factor on high-rise construction project.

  • This study is to find out empirically how the fear of crime is affected by the level of recognition of people. CPTED elements including natural surveillance, access control, utilization enhancement, territoriality securement, etc. Safety of residents could be considered and then increased when we plan, design, and operate a city. In Korea, CPTED is currently being applied to every town. However, it is not systemized and neither efficient, for there are no constraint provisions, and the foreign cases are not specifically customized to the current situation of the country. This study, therefore, aims to find the limits from analyzing related laws and regimes, administrative regulations, and applied cases, and to deduct improvement plans based on examined foreign cases.

  • Corresponding to the rapid growth of the aging population without an adequate social safety net for the elderly, older people face great disadvantages due to sudden illness or poor health and a lack of support from the younger generation. Furthermore, older women are suffering from a drastic deterioration of their economic status because of insufficient retirement savings. Examining the impact of labor force participation and living arrangement on health status and life satisfaction in later life, it is important to consider gender differences in context of social policies for the elderly. Using data based on a stratified national sample of the elderly by the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLoSA), multiple regression model were used to estimate the relationships between labor force participation and health status and subjective life satisfaction concerning the quality of their later life. The result indicates that good health status and high level of life satisfaction are associated with the type of paid work status for the elderly men, but those are associated with the type of non paid work, such as family businesses employees for the elderly women. Significant differences in chronic health condition and subjective life satisfaction by employment characteristics are found among the elderly. In addition, older women's high level of life satisfaction was associated with the participation of the social activity. The major conclusion from these results should help us understand gender differences in the elderly and acknowledge further exploration of gender variations in these people's later life.
