  • In the present study, two-dimensional numerical investigation of flow past a square cylinder beneath the free surface has been performed to identify the effects of presence of the free surface. An immersed boundary method was adopted for implementation of the cylinder cross-section in a Cartesian grid system. Also, a level-set method was used to capture the interface of two fluids. To prevent transition to three-dimensional flow, Reynolds number chosen for this simulation was 150. The cases for Froude number 0.2 and gap ratio(h/D) between 0.25 and 5.00 were examined. At the specific Reynolds number, we study the effects of gap ratio on flow characteristics around a square cylinder by computing flow fields, force coefficients and Strouhal number.

  • We investigate two-dimensional laminar flow around rectangular cylinders placed in a uniform stream. Numerical simulations are performed, using finite volume method, in the ranges of $50{\leq}Re{\leq}150$ and $0.1{\leq}W/H{\leq}1.0$, where Re and W/H are the Reynolds number and the width-to-height ratio, respectively. The immersed boundary method is used to handle the rectangular cylinder in a rectangular grid system. Comparisons with the previous results show good agreement in Strouhal number, drag and lift coefficient. The present study reports the detailed information of flow structure at different width-to-height ratios in the ranges of $50{\leq}Re{\leq}150$.

  • Effect of computational domain size in simulating of periodic obstacle flow has been investigated for the flow past tube banks. Reynolds number, defined by freestream velocity ($U_{\infty}$) and cylinder diameter (d), was fixed as 200, and center-to-center distance (P) as 1.5d. In-line square array and staggered square array were considered. Drag coefficient, lift coefficient and Strouhal number were calculated depending on domain size. Circular cylinders were implemented on a Cartesian grid system by using an immersed boundary method. Boundary condition is periodic in both streamwise and lateral directions. Previous studies in literature often use a square domain with a side length of P, which contains only one cylinder. However, this study reveals that the domain size is improper. Especially, RMS values of flow-induced forces are most sensitive to the domain size.

  • Flexible structures have been adopted in heat transfer systems as vortex generators. The flexible vortex generators immersed in a flow show a self-sustained oscillatory motion, which enhances fluid mixing and heat transfer. In the present study, the vortex generators in a two-dimensional channel flow are numerically investigated, and they are symmetrically mounted on the upper and lower walls with an inclination angle. The momentum interaction and heat transfer between the flexible vortex generators and the surrounding fluid are considered by using an immersed boundary method. The inclination angle is one of the important factors in determining the flapping kinematics of the flexible vortex generators. The flapping amplitude increases as the inclination angle increases, thereby enhancing fluid mixing. The heat transfer is enhanced up to 80% comparing to the baseline channel flow.

  • Strong wind flow around a building complex was numerically studied by LES. The original motivation of this work stemmed from the efforts to develop a risk assessment technique for windstorm hazards. Lagrangian-averaged scale-invariant dynamic subgrid-scale model was used for turbulence modeling, and a log-law-based wall model was employed on all the solid surfaces including the ground and the surface of buildings to replace the no-slip condition. The shape of buildings was implemented on the Cartesian grid system by an immersed boundary method. Key flow quantities for the risk assessment such as mean and RMS values of pressure on the surface of the selected buildings are presented. In addition, characteristics of the velocity field at some selected locations vital to safety of human beings is also reported.

  • An efficient code has been developed to predict dispersion of indoor air pollutants The computing capability of the code has been compared with that of a commercial code inn a benchmark test. After that, the code has been employed to compute dispersion of a pollutant released from a new furniture, a kind of Sick Building Syndrome (SBS). A sofa which generates formaldehyde is implemented by using an immersed boundary method. Large Eddy Simulation (LES) is employed to obtain time-dependent velocity and scalar fields. LES has bee regarded as an academic tool, but the newly-developed code reveals a possibility of application of LES to practical problems, especially dispersion of indoor pollutants.

  • Flows around two oscillating cylinders in side-by-side arrangement at Re=185 are simulated using an immersed boundary method. The cylinders oscillate vertically in opposite directions in uniform cross-flow. We describe flow patterns, drag and lift forces by varying distance between two cylinders $(1.4{\leq}g{\leq}2.2,\;1.0{\leq}g{\leq}1.8)$ and oscillating frequency ratios $(f_e/f_o=0.8,\;f_e/f_o=1.0\;and\;f_e/f_o =1.2)$. Wake patterns, drag and lift coefficients are affected by both of frequency ratio and gap between two cylinders. Near wakes of each case are classified with the definition of previous studies.

  • We present a mathematical model of left heart governed by the partial differential equations. This heart is coupled with a lumped model of the whole circulatory system governed by the ordinary differential equations. The immersed boundary method is used to investigate the intracardiac blood flow and the cardiac valve motions of the normal circulation in humans. We investigate the intraventricular velocity field and the velocity curves over the mitral ring and across outflow tract. The pressure and flow are also measured in the left and right heart and the systemic and pulmonary arteries. The simulation results are comparable to the existing measurements.
