In a classification problem, data imbalance occurs when the number of instances in one class greatly outnumbers the number of instances in the other class. Such data sets often cause a default classifier to be built due to skewed boundary and thus the reduction in the classification accuracy of such a classifier. This paper proposes a Geometric Mean-based Boosting (GM-Boost) to resolve the problem of data imbalance. Since GM-Boost introduces the notion of geometric mean, it can perform learning process considering both majority and minority sides, and reinforce the learning on misclassified data. An empirical study with bankruptcy prediction on Korea companies shows that GM-Boost has the higher classification accuracy than previous methods including Under-sampling, Over-Sampling, and AdaBoost, used in imbalanced data and robust learning performance regardless of the degree of data imbalance.
In this manuscript, we tried to improve the performance of the FC-DenseNet by applying an attention gate for the classification of cropping areas. The attention gate module could facilitate the learning of a deep learning model and improve the performance of the model by injecting of spatial/spectral weights to each feature map. Crop classification was performed in the onion and garlic regions using a proposed deep learning model in which an attention gate was added to the skip connection part of FC-DenseNet. Training data was produced using various PlanetScope satellite imagery, and preprocessing was applied to minimize the problem of imbalanced training dataset. As a result of the crop classification, it was verified that the proposed deep learning model can more effectively classify the onion and garlic regions than existing FC-DenseNet algorithm.

Recently, ransomware damage has been increasing rapidly around the world, including Irish health authorities and U.S. oil pipelines, and is causing damage to all sectors of society. In particular, research using machine learning as well as existing detection methods is increasing for ransomware detection and response. However, traditional machine learning has a problem in that it is difficult to extract accurate predictions because the model tends to predict in the direction where there is a lot of data. Accordingly, in an imbalance class consisting of a large number of non-Ransomware (normal code or malware) and a small number of Ransomware, a technique for resolving the imbalance and improving ransomware detection performance is proposed. In this experiment, we use two scenarios (Binary, Multi Classification) to confirm that the sampling technique improves the detection performance of a small number of classes while maintaining the detection performance of a large number of classes. In particular, the proposed mixed sampling technique (SMOTE+ENN) resulted in a performance(G-mean, F1-score) improvement of more than 10%.

In recent research, deep learning-based methods have achieved state-of-the-art performance in various computer vision tasks. However, these methods are commonly supervised, and require huge amounts of annotated data to train. Acquisition of data demands an additional costly effort, particularly for the tasks where it becomes challenging to obtain large amounts of data considering the time constraints and the requirement of professional human diligence. In this paper, we present a data level synthetic sampling solution to learn from small and imbalanced data sets using Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). The reason for using GANs are the challenges posed in various fields to manage with the small datasets and fluctuating amounts of samples per class. As a result, we present an approach that can improve learning with respect to data distributions, reducing the partiality introduced by class imbalance and hence shifting the classification decision boundary towards more accurate results. Our novel method is demonstrated on a small dataset of 2789 tomato plant disease images, highly corrupted with class imbalance in 9 disease categories. Moreover, we evaluate our results in terms of different metrics and compare the quality of these results for distinct classes.

A dramatic rise in the number of people dying from heart disease has prompted efforts to find a way to identify it sooner using efficient approaches. A variety of variables contribute to the condition and even hereditary factors. The current estimate approaches use an automated diagnostic system that fails to attain a high level of accuracy because it includes irrelevant dataset information. This paper presents an effective neural network with convolutional layers for classifying clinical data that is highly class-imbalanced. Traditional approaches rely on massive amounts of data rather than precise predictions. Data must be picked carefully in order to achieve an earlier prediction process. It's a setback for analysis if the data obtained is just partially complete. However, feature extraction is a major challenge in classification and prediction since increased data increases the training time of traditional machine learning classifiers. The work integrates the CNN-MDRP classifier (convolutional neural network (CNN)-based efficient multimodal disease risk prediction with TANFIS (tuned adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system) for earlier accurate prediction. Perform data cleaning by transforming partial data to informative data from the dataset in this project. The recommended TANFIS tuning parameters are then improved using a Laplace Gaussian mutation-based grasshopper and moth flame optimization approach (LGM2G). The proposed approach yields a prediction accuracy of 98.40 percent when compared to current algorithms.
Seafood is a major source of protein in many countries and its consumption is increasing. In Korea, consumption of seafood is increasing, but self-sufficiency rate is decreasing, and the importance of safety management is increasing as the amount of imported seafood increases. There are hundreds of species of aquatic products imported into Korea from over 110 countries, and there is a limit to relying only on the experience of inspectors for safety management of imported aquatic products. Based on the data, a model that can predict the customs inspection results of imported aquatic products is developed, and a machine learning classification model that determines the non-conformity of aquatic products when an import declaration is submitted is created. As a result of customs inspection of imported marine products, the nonconformity rate is less than 1%, which is very low imbalanced data. Therefore, a sampling method that can complement these characteristics was comparatively studied, and a preprocessing method that can interpret the classification result was applied. Among various machine learning-based classification models, Random Forest and XGBoost showed good performance. The model that predicts both compliance and non-conformance well as a result of the clearance inspection is the basic random forest model to which ADASYN and one-hot encoding are applied, and has an accuracy of 99.88%, precision of 99.87%, recall of 99.89%, and AUC of 99.88%. XGBoost is the most stable model with all indicators exceeding 90% regardless of oversampling and encoding type.
Purpose: The development of information technology makes it easy to utilize high-dimensional categorical data. In this regard, the purpose of this study is to propose a novel method to select the proper categorical variables in high-dimensional categorical data. Methods: The proposed feature selection method consists of three steps: (1) The first step defines the goodness-to-pick measure. In this paper, a categorical variable is relevant if it has relationships among other variables. According to the above definition of relevant variables, the goodness-to-pick measure calculates the normalized conditional entropy with other variables. (2) The second step finds the relevant feature subset from the original variables set. This step decides whether a variable is relevant or not. (3) The third step eliminates redundancy variables from the relevant feature subset. Results: Our experimental results showed that the proposed feature selection method generally yielded better classification performance than without feature selection in high-dimensional categorical data, especially as the number of irrelevant categorical variables increase. Besides, as the number of irrelevant categorical variables that have imbalanced categorical values is increasing, the difference in accuracy between the proposed method and the existing methods being compared increases. Conclusion: According to experimental results, we confirmed that the proposed method makes it possible to consistently produce high classification accuracy rates in high-dimensional categorical data. Therefore, the proposed method is promising to be used effectively in high-dimensional situation.
In this study, the relationship between natural gas (NG) data and gas-related environmental elements was performed using machine learning algorithms to predict the level of gas leakage risk without directly measuring gas leakage data. The study was based on open data provided by the server using the IoT-based remote control Picarro gas sensor specification. The naturel gas leaks into the air, it is a big problem for air pollution, environment and the health. The proposed method is multivariate outlier removing method based Random Forest (RF) classification for predicting risk of NG leak. After, unsupervised k-means clustering, the experimental dataset has done imbalanced data. Therefore, we focusing our proposed models can predict medium and high risk so best. In this case, we compared the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, accuracy, area under the ROC curve (AUC), and mean standard error (MSE) for each classification model. As a result of our experiments, the evaluation measurements include accuracy, area under the ROC curve (AUC), and MSE; 99.71%, 99.57%, and 0.0016 for MOL_RF respectively.

This paper is a study to find out the factors affecting the defects that occur during the use of Electron Beam Melting (EBM), one of the 3D printer output methods, through data analysis. By referring to factors identified as major causes of defects in previous studies, log files occurring between processes were analyzed and related variables were extracted. In addition, focusing on the fact that the data is time series data, the concept of a window was introduced to compose variables including data from all three layers. The dependent variable is a binary classification problem with the presence or absence of defects, and due to the problem that the proportion of defect layers is low (about 4%), balanced training data were created through the SMOTE technique. For the analysis, I use XGBoost using Gridsearch CV, and evaluate the classification performance based on the confusion matrix. I conclude results of the stuy by analyzing the importance of variables through SHAP values.
As generative adversarial network (GAN) based oversampling techniques have achieved impressive results in class imbalance of unstructured dataset such as image, many studies have begun to apply it to solving the problem of imbalance in structured dataset. However, these studies have failed to reflect the characteristics of structured data due to changing the data structure into an unstructured data format. In order to overcome the limitation, this study adapted CycleGAN to reflect the characteristics of structured data, and proposed hybridization of synthetic minority oversampling technique (SMOTE) and the adapted CycleGAN. In particular, this study tried to overcome the limitations of existing studies by using a one-dimensional convolutional neural network unlike previous studies that used two-dimensional convolutional neural network. Oversampling based on the method proposed have been experimented using various datasets and compared the performance of the method with existing oversampling methods such as SMOTE and adaptive synthetic sampling (ADASYN). The results indicated the proposed hybrid oversampling method showed superior performance compared to the existing methods when data have more dimensions or higher degree of imbalance. This study implied that the classification performance of oversampling structured data can be improved using the proposed hybrid oversampling method that considers the characteristic of structured data.
