Rapid and accurate phase synchronization is critical for the reliable control of grid-tied inverters. However, the commonly used software phase-locked loop methods do not always satisfy the need for high-speed and accurate phase synchronization under severe grid imbalance conditions. To address this problem, this study develops a novel open-loop phase locking scheme based on a synchronous reference frame. The proposed scheme is characterized by remarkable response speed, high accuracy, and easy implementation. It comprises three functional cascaded blocks: fast orthogonal signal generation block, fast fundamental-frequency positive sequence component construction block, and fast phase calculation block. The developed virtual orthogonal signal generation method in the first block, which is characterized by noise immunity and high accuracy, can effectively avoid approximation errors and noise amplification in a wide range of sampling frequencies. In the second block, which is the foundation for achieving fast phase synchronization within 3 ms, the fundamental-frequency positive sequence components of unsymmetrical grid voltages can be achieved with the developed orthogonal signal construction strategy and the symmetrical component method. The real-time grid phase can be consequently obtained in the third block, which is free from self-tuning closed-loop control and thus improves the dynamic performance of the proposed scheme. The proposed scheme is adaptive to severe unsymmetrical grid voltages with sudden changes in magnitude, phase, and/or frequency. Moreover, this scheme is able to eliminate phase errors induced by harmonics and random noise. The validity and utility of the proposed scheme are verified by the experimental results.
Drug-resistance and imbalance of apoptotic regulation limit chemotherapy clinical application for the human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) treatment. The reactivation of p53 is an attractive therapeutic strategy in cancer with disrupted-p53 function. Nutlin-3, a MDM2 antagonist, has antitumor activity in various cancers. The post-translational modifications of p53 are a hot topic, but there are some controversy ideas about the function of phospho-$Ser^{392}$-p53 protein in cancer cell lines in response to Nutlin-3. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between Nutlin-3 and phospho-$Ser^{392}$-p53 protein expression levels in SMMC-7721 (wild-type TP53) and HuH-7 cells (mutant TP53). We demonstrated that Nutlin-3 induced apoptosis through down-regulation phospho-$Ser^{392}$-p53 in two HCC cells. The result suggests that inhibition of p53 phosphorylation on $Ser^{392}$ presents an alternative for HCC chemotherapy.
Panic disorder is a common psychiatric illness that causes considerable morbidity. However, the biological basis of panic disorder remains unclear. In this report, we present and summarize the current literature on functional neuroimaging studies related to the neurobiology of panic disorder. The findings were summarized and divided into six groups : (1) known brain structures related to anxiety, especially panic disorder ; (2) structural results ; (3) functional imaging studies at rest ; (4) functional imaging studies with challenge testing ; (5) neuroreceptor studies ; and (6) changes in the treatment of panic disorder. Based on the findings of these neuroimaging studies, it seems as though panic disorder involves the hippocampal and parahippocampal areas, including the amygdala, as well as some cortical regions, such as the temporal and prefrontal cortices. Panic disorder is known to be associated with an imbalance between the right and left hemispheres of the brain at rest or during panic attacks. During a panic attack, patients with panic disorder are likely to experience an increase in local activity in the cingulate, insula, midbrain, and so on. On the other hand, a widespread reduction in the cortical areas has also been reported in most provocation studies. Thus, panic disorder may be related to the excess activation of the fear networks in response to subtle environmental cues and insufficient inhibition from higher cortical control areas ; however ; further studies are recommended in order to fully understand the neurobiology of panic disorder.
Introduction : Orthostatic tremor develops in the legs while standing up with no weakness, pain or imbalance in the leg and the tremor is characteristically not observed when walking. However there have been some confusions about orthostatic tremor in several aspects. For the past ten years, we have observed 4 patients with orthostatic tremor. In each case tests were performed to investigate the following three important areas of inquiry about orthostatic tremor. Firstly, whether this disorder is an independent diagnostic entity or a variant of essential tremor. Secondly, whether the progress of this disorder is specifically related with standing posture. Lastly, the nature of the pathophysiologic mechanism behind the appearance of the tremor when standing after the lapse of a certain latent period and its disappearance upon the commencement of walking. Methods : Our 4 cases of orthostatic tremor were studied clinically, electrophysiologically, and pharmacologically. Electrophysiological tests included tremor spectrum test and electromyography. Results : We observed the presence of this tremor in several other tonic postures, as well as its absence, in a vertically lifted position from all our cases. Our cases registered a variable tremor frequency between 5 and 12 Hz according to the tremor spectrum test and EMG. Furthermore all our 4 cases demonstrated patterns of both synchronous EMG activity and alternating EMG activity at various times in homologous muscles of both legs. Orthostatic tremor was improved significantly with propranolol as well as clonazepam. Conclusions : From the results of our study we drew the following conclusions. It is probable that orthostatic tremor is simply a variant of essential tremor rather than being an independent diagnostic entity and that in most cases its development is specifically related with muscle contraction rather than merely with the act of standing. Furthermore we discovered a clue in the previously described neural control mechanism that the nuclear bag fibers in the muscle spindle have lag time of several seconds in their response to muscle strength and that their baseline does not reset fully in rapidly moving muscle. This neural control mechanism could offer sufficient explanation for the phenomena of tremor appearance when standing and disappearance when walking in orthostatic tremor.
In this paper, a method is proposed for establishing an approximate prediction model of rotor-dynamics through modal testing. In particular, the proposed method is applicable to systems that cannot be established according to conventional methods owing to the absence of information regarding the dimensions and material of the rotor-bearing system. The proposed method is demonstrated by employing a motor dynamometer driven by a 1 MW class induction motor without dimension and material information. The proposed method comprises a total of seven steps, wherein an initial model is established by incorporating approximate dimensions and material information, and the model is improved on the basis of the natural frequency characteristics of the system. During model improvement, the modification factor is introduced for adjusting the elastic modulus and shear modulus of the system. Analysis of critical speed and imbalance response indicates that the separation margin is 67% and the maximum vibration amplitude is less than the amplitude limit of 0.032 mm under the API 611 standard, which means that the motor dynamometer can stably operate at a rated speed of 1800 rpm. Hence, the obtained results validate the feasibility of the proposed method. Furthermore, for broad usage, it is necessary to accordingly apply and validate the proposed method for various rotor-bearing systems.
Populations both in the US and worldwide are aging. It is projected that by the year 2030 the population of Americans over 65 will increase to 70 million, more than twice their number in 1998. About one-third of elderly over the age of 65 have debilitating chronic health conditions that greatly impede their activities. Age-associated chronic diseases are believed to be associated with free radicals and the imbalance in antioxidant and oxidative stress contributes to development of several chronic health conditions. Diet and nutrients can have great impact in the health status of elderly. Several factors may contributor to the inadequate consumption of nutrients in elderly, including an inability to chew food adequately, polypharmacy, living along and limited income. Low intake of energy and several micronutrients are common among the elderly. Although overt deficiency of nutrients among the elderly is not common. a recent study showed that while elderly consume more fat, the total energy intake is low among the elderly. Inadequate intake of antioxidant nutrients such as vitamin E in elderly may contribute to the development of chronic health problems. Intake of higher than normal RDA levels of vitamin E for long periods of time has been shown to reduce the risk of many degenerative diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases(CVD) and cancer, and improve immune response in elderly. High intake of other antioxidants is also associated with reduced risk chronic diseases. Dietary antioxidants are abundant in fruits and vegetables. However, due to variety of factors, the elderly may not be able to receive these and other micronutrients through diet. Therefore, supplemental intake of micronutrients in the form of multi vitamins/minerals and/or specific micronutrients is a more practical approach to the maintenance of health status in the elderly.
Background: The pathophysiology of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) includes inflammation, oxidative stress, an imbalance of proteases and antiproteases and apoptosis which has been focused on lately. Abnormal apoptotic events have been demonstrated in both epithelial and endothelial cells, as well as in inflammatory cells including neutrophils and lymphocytes in the lungs of COPD patients. An increased propensity of activated T lymphocytes to undergo apoptosis has been observed in the peripheral blood of COPD patients. Therefore, the apoptosis of T lymphocytes without activating them was investigated in this study. Methods: Twelve control subjects, 21 stable COPD patients and 15 exacerbated COPD patients were recruited in the study. The T lymphocytes were isolated from the peripheral blood using magnetically activated cell sorting. Apoptosis of the T lymphocytes was assessed with flow cytometry using Annexin V and 7-aminoactinomycin D. Apoptosis of T lymphocytes at 24 hours after the cell culture was measured so that the T lymphocyte apoptosis among the control and the COPD patients could be compared. Results: Stable COPD patients had increased rates of $CD4^+$ T lymphocyte apoptosis at 24 hours after the cell culture, more than the $CD4^+$ T lymphocyte apoptosis which appeared in the control group, while the COPD patients with acute exacerbation had an amplified response of $CD4^+$ T lymphocyte apoptosis as well as of $CD8^+$ T lymphocyte apoptosis at 24 hours after the cell culture. Conclusion: Stable COPD patients have more apoptosis of $CD4^+$ T lymphocytes, which can be associated with the pathophysiology of COPD in stable conditions.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of Taegeuk acupuncture on reducing mental stress by analyzing heart rate variability in Soyangin. Methods : Eight Soyangin-diagnosed women participated in this study. They were randomly divided into group A and group B. Each participant went through 3 sessions every week with 1 week of washout period in between each session. HRV was measured three times at every session; at baseline, after administering mentally stressful circumstances and after applying either one of simple rest, Soyangin Taegeuk acupuncture or Soeumin Taegeuk acupuncture. This study was designed as a crossover clinical trial. After same initial simple resting session for both groups at week 1, acupuncture for group A were executed in the order of Soyangin Taegeuk acupuncture and Soeumin Taegeuk acupuncture at week 2 and 3 respectively, with acupuncture for group B conducted in reverse order. Results : Simple rest and Soeumin Taegeuk acupuncture did not show the significant changes in response to LF(norm) and HF(norm) after stress stimuli. Soyangin Taegeuk acupuncture did, however, significantly decrease LF(norm) and increase HF(norm). Soyangin Taegeuk acupuncture, compared to Soeumin Taegeuk acupuncture, significantly stabilized autonomic nervous system. Conclusions : This study suggests that Soyangin Taegeuk acupuncture might be an effective means of stabilizing mental stress-induced imbalance of autonomic nervous system for Soyangin.
Dietary flavonoids have attracted a great deal of attention as agents for preventing estrogen-related diseases, such as postmenopausal symptoms, and for reducing the risk of estrogen-dependent cancer. Kaempferol is one of the most commonly found dietary phytoestrogen. The aim of this study was to investigate the estrogenic and/or antiestrogenic effect of kaempferol, which can confirm its potency as a preventive agent against estrogen-related diseases. Kaempferol has both estrogenic and antiestrogenic activity, which are biphasic response on estrogen receptor. The estrogenic activity of kaempferol induced via ER-mediated pathway depending on $E_2$ concentration $(\leq\;10^{-12}M)$. Kaempferol $(10^{-5}\;M)$ also caused antiproliferative effect on MCF-7 cell in the presence of $E_2\;(10^{-11}\;M)$ and restored to the addition of excess $E_2\;(10^{-7}\;M)$, which confirms that antiproliferation of kaempferol was induced via ER-dependent pathway. However, at $10^{-4}\;M$, concentration higher than the concentrations at which the estrogenic effects of kaempferol are detected $(10^{-5}\;M)$, kaempferol induced strong antiproliferative effect, but were unaffected by the addition of excess $E_2\;(10^{-7}\;M)$ indicating that kaempferol exerts antiproliferation via ER-independent pathway. In particular, kaempferol blocked the focus formation induced by $E_2$, which confirms that kaempferol might inhibit the malignant transformation caused by estrogens. Therefore, we suggested that kaempferol might regulate a suitable level of estrogenic activity in the body and is expected to have potential beneficial effects in preventing estrogen imbalance diseases (breast cancer, osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease and etc.).
Allergy is an immune response that appears in certain people, and reactions such as coughing, shortness of breath, and hives occur. The immune system plays an important role in homeostasis and host defense, and allergies cause hypersensitivity reactions when an imbalance of immunity occurs. Mutations in the TLR genes are associated with autoimmune conditions such as allergies and asthma. It has been reported that a locus in the TLR1-TLR6-TLR10 region may be associated with atopic sensitization or allergy. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to select an allergy patient group and a healthy control group to determine how the genetic mutation of TLR1 affects the onset of disease. This study was conducted in 709 patients and 5,025 control groups out of 10,956 patients with data from KARE and HEXA cohorts. As a result of logistic regression analysis of 6 SNPs selected from the TLR1 gene, only rs117033348 showed a statistically significant correlation (P = 0.002356). The influence of rs117033348 was examined using PolyPhen-2, and a significant result was shown. Therefore, it can be predicted that the G base in rs117033348 will have an influence on the human body. In addition, Geography of Genetic Variants browser was used to confirm the geographical distribution of allele frequencies for the TLR1 gene. Although it was found that there was a large racial difference in the prevalence of TLR1 SNP, it could be confirmed that the polymorphism of rs117033348 conducted in this study was only specific in East Asia when compared with each race.
