We describe an approach that uses a bilateral filter to reduce the ringing artifact in motion-blurred restoration image. It takes into account the specific physical structure of the ringing artifact combined with the properties of the human visual system. To properly reduce the ringing artifact, each of the adjacent pixels is limited in a straight line which has a given direction. To protect the edges and the texture regions of an image, our algorithm divides the image into texture regions and flat regions, and the artifact reduction algorithm is only applied to the flat region. Finally, we use 8 typical images and 5 objective quality evaluation indices to evaluate our algorithm. Experimental results show that our algorithm can obtain better results in subjective visual effect and in objective image quality evaluation.
This paper proposes a new automatic detection method to inspect mura defects on display film surface using morphological image processing and labeling. This automatic detection method for mura defects on display films comprises 3 phases of preprocessing with morphological image processing, Gabor filtering, and labeling. Since distorted results could be obtained with the presence of non-uniform illumination, preprocessing step reduces illumination components using morphological image processing. In Gabor filtering, mura images are created with binary coded mura components using Gabor filters. Subsequently, labeling is a final phase of finding the mura defect area using the difference between large mura defects and values in the periphery. To evaluate the accuracy of the proposed detection method, detection rate was assessed by applying the method in 200 display film samples. As a result, the detection rate was high at about 95.5%. Moreover, the study was able to acquire reliable results using the Semu index for luminance mura in image quality inspection.
This paper proposes computer visual inspection algorithms for PCB defects which are found in a manufacturing process. The proposed method can detect open circuit and short circuit on bare PCB without using any reference images. It performs adaptive threshold processing for the ROI (Region of Interest) of a target image, median filtering to remove noises, and then analyzes connected components of the binary image. In this paper, the connected components of circuit pattern are defined as 6 types. The proposed method classifies the connected components of the target image into 6 types, and determines an unclassified component as a defect of the circuit. The analysis of the original target image detects open circuits, while the analysis of the complement image finds short circuits. The machine vision inspection system is implemented using C language in an embedded Linux system for a high-speed real-time image processing. Experiment results show that the proposed algorithms are quite successful.
To solve the problems of the low image contrast, fuzzy edge details and edge details missing in noisy image fusion, this study proposes a noisy infrared and visible light image fusion algorithm based on non-subsample contourlet transform (NSCT) and an improved bilateral filter, which uses NSCT to decompose an image into a low-frequency component and high-frequency component. High-frequency noise and edge information are mainly distributed in the high-frequency component, and the improved bilateral filtering method is used to process the high-frequency component of two images, filtering the noise of the images and calculating the image detail of the infrared image's high-frequency component. It can extract the edge details of the infrared image and visible image as much as possible by superimposing the high-frequency component of infrared image and visible image. At the same time, edge information is enhanced and the visual effect is clearer. For the fusion rule of low-frequency coefficient, the local area standard variance coefficient method is adopted. At last, we decompose the high- and low-frequency coefficient to obtain the fusion image according to the inverse transformation of NSCT. The fusion results show that the edge, contour, texture and other details are maintained and enhanced while the noise is filtered, and the fusion image with a clear edge is obtained. The algorithm could better filter noise and obtain clear fused images in noisy infrared and visible light image fusion.
A new nonlinear filtering algorithm for effectively denoising images corrupted by the random-valued impulse noise, called dual sliding statistics switching median (DSSSM) filter is presented in this paper. The proposed DSSSM filter is made up of two subunits; i.e. Impulse noise detection and noise filtering. Initially, the impulse noise detection stage of DSSSM algorithm begins by processing the statistics of a localized detection window in sorted order and non-sorted order, simultaneously. Next, the median of absolute difference (MAD) obtained from both sorted statistics and non-sorted statistics will be further processed in order to classify any possible noise pixels. Subsequently, the filtering stage will replace the detected noise pixels with the estimated median value of the surrounding pixels. In addition, fuzzy based local information is used in the filtering stage to help the filter preserves the edges and details. Extensive simulations results conducted on gray scale images indicate that the DSSSM filter performs significantly better than a number of well-known impulse noise filters existing in literature in terms of noise suppression and detail preservation; with as much as 30% impulse noise corruption rate. Finally, this DSSSM filter is algorithmically simple and suitable to be implemented for electronic imaging products.

A morphological filtering algorithm using directional information is presented. Directional filtering technique is effective in reducing noises and preserving edges. The proposed directional filtering is composed of two stage filtering processes. The opening and closing operations in the lst stage are performed for the pixels is aligned to the vertical, horizontal, and two diagonal directions, respectively. The opening operation supresses the positive impulse noises, while the closing operation the negative ones. Then, each directional result and their average value are filtered by the opening or closing operations in the 2nd stage. The averaging operation diminishes the effects of Gaussian noises in the homogeneous regions. Thus, the morphological operation in the 1 st stageremoves the impulse noises and in 2nd stage reduces. Gaussian ones. The experimental results show that the proposed filtering is superior to the existing nonlinear filtering in the aspects of the subjective quality. Also, the morphological filtering method reduces the computational loads.

Image processing techniques are fundamental in human vision-based image information processing. There have been widely studied areas such as image transformation, image enhancement, image restoration, and image compression. One of research subgoals in those areas is enhancing image information for the correct information retrieval. As a fundamental task for the image recognition and interpretation, image enhancement includes noise filtering techniques. Conventional filtering algorithms may have high noise removal rate but usually have difficulty in conserving boundary information. As a result, they often use additional image processing algorithms in compensation for the tradeoff of more CPU time and higher possibility of information loss. In this paper, we propose a Fuzzy Mask Filtering algorithm that has high noise removal rate but lesser problems in above-mentioned side-effects. Our algorithm firstly decides a threshold based on fuzzy logic with information from masks. Then it decides the output pixel value by that threshold. In a designed experiment that has random impulse noise and salt pepper noise, the proposed algorithm was more effective in noise removal without information loss.
Authors studied on the applicability of image analysis technique using a scanner with a CCD (charged coupled deviced) to the evaluation of evenness of nonwovens because it has distinctive features to considerably save time and labor in the analysis compared with other classical methods. As specimens fur the experiment, two different types that are unpatterned and patterned ones were prepared. For the unpatterned specimen, webs were chemically bonded, while for the patterned specimen, webs being thermally calendered with engraved roller. Several webs having various areal densities were prepared and bonded. Coefficient of variation (CV%) was used as a parameter to evaluate the evenness. Scanning conditions could be suitably set up through comparing the total variance to the between-group variance and to the within-group variance, respectively, on the images scanned at the different conditions. The 2D convolution method with smoothing filter kernel was introduced to further filter the noises on the scanned images. After the filtering process, the increase of web areal densities gave an uniform decrease of the CV%. This showed that the scanned image analysis with proper filtering process could be successfully applicable to the evaluation of evenness in nonwovens.

In this paper, we address the tracking problem caused by camera motion and rolling shutter effects associated with CMOS sensors in consumer handheld cameras, such as mobile cameras, digital cameras, and digital camcorders. A modified particle filtering method is proposed for simultaneously tracking objects and compensating for the effects of camera motion. The proposed method uses an elastic registration algorithm (ER) that considers the global affine motion as well as the brightness and contrast between images, assuming that camera motion results in an affine transform of the image between two successive frames. By assuming that the camera motion is modeled globally by an affine transform, only the global affine model instead of the local model was considered. Only the brightness parameter was used in intensity variation. The contrast parameters used in the original ER algorithm were ignored because the change in illumination is small enough between temporally adjacent frames. The proposed particle filtering consists of the following four steps: (i) prediction step, (ii) compensating prediction state error based on camera motion estimation, (iii) update step and (iv) re-sampling step. A larger number of particles are needed when camera motion generates a prediction state error of an object at the prediction step. The proposed method robustly tracks the object of interest by compensating for the prediction state error using the affine motion model estimated from ER. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the conventional particle filter, and can track moving objects robustly in consumer handheld imaging devices.
Ship detection in synthetic aperture radar(SAR)imagery has long been an active research topic and has many applications. In this paper,we propose an efficient method for detecting ships from SAR imagery using filtering. This method exploits ship masking using a median filter that considers maximum ship sizes and detects ships from the reference image, to which a Non-Local means (NL-means) filter is applied for speckle de-noising and a differential image created from the difference between the reference image and the median filtered image. As the pixels of the ship in the SAR imagery have sufficiently higher values than the surrounding sea, the ship detection process is composed primarily of filtering based on this characteristic. The performance test for this method is validated using KOMPSAT-5 (Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite-5) SAR imagery. According to the accuracy assessment, the overall accuracy of the region that does not include land is 76.79%, and user accuracy is 71.31%. It is demonstrated that the proposed detection method is suitable to detect ships in SAR imagery and enables us to detect ships more easily and efficiently.
