To assess tunnel safety, cracks in tunnel lining are measured by inspectors who observe cracks with their eyes. A manual inspection is, however, slow and subjective. This paper, therefore, proposes vision-based inspection system for measuring cracks in the tunnel lining that inspects cracks fast and objective. The system is consisted of an on-vehicle system and a lab system. An on-vehicle system acquires image data with line CCD camera. A lab system extracts crack then inform their thickness, length and orientation by using image processing. To improve accuracy of crack recognition the geometric properties of a crack was applied to image processing. The proposed system were verified with experiments in both laboratory and field environment.
A new texture segmentation-based image coding technique which performs segmentation based on roughness of textural regions and properties of the human visual system (HVS) is presented. This method solves the problems of a segmentation-based image coding technique with constant segments by proposing a methodology for segmenting an image texturally homogeneous regions with respect to the degree of roughness as perceived by the HVS. The fractal dimension is used to measure the roughness of the textural regions. The segmentation is accomplished by thresholding the fractal dimension so that textural regions are classified into three texture classes; perceived constant intensity, smooth texture, and rough texture. An image coding system with high compression and good image quality is achieved by developing an efficient coding technique for each segment boundary and each texture class. For the boundaries, a binary image representing all the boundaries is created. For regions belonging to perceived constant intensity, only the mean intensity values need to be transmitted. The smooth and rough texture regions are modeled first using polynomial functions, so only the coefficients characterizing the polynomial functions need to be transmitted. The bounda-ries, the means and the polynomial functions are then each encoded using an errorless coding scheme. Good quality reconstructed images are obtained with about 0.08 to 0.3 bit per pixel for three different types of imagery ; a head and shoulder image with little texture variation, a complex image with many edges, and a natural outdoor image with highly textured areas.

The computer vision system was designed and constructed to measure the weight of a dairy cattle. Its development involved the functions of image capture, image preprocessing, image algorithm, and control integrated into one program. The experiments were conducted with the model dairy cattle and the real dairy cattle by two ways. First experiment with the model dairy cattle was conducted by using the indoor vision experimental system, which was built to measure the model dairy cattle in the laboratory. Second experiment with real dairy cattle was conducted by using the outdoor vision experimental system, which was built for measuring 229 heads of cows in the cattle facilities. This vision system proved to a reliable system by conducting their performance test with 15 heads of real cow in the cattle facilities. Indirect weight measuring with four methods were conducted by using the image processing system, which was the same system for measuring of body parameters. Error value of transform equation using chest girth was 30%. This error was seen as the cause of accumulated error by manually measurement. So it was not appropriate to estimate cow weight by using the transform equation, which was calculated from pixel values of the chest girth. Measurement of cow weight by multiple regression equation from top and side view images has relatively less error value, 5%. When cow weight was measured indirectly by image surface area from the pixel of top and side view images, maximum error value was 11.7%. When measured cow weight by image volume, maximum error weight was 57 kg. Generally, weight error was within 30 kg but maximum error 10.7%. Volume transform method, out of 4 measuring weight methods, was minimum error weight 21.8 kg.
Recently, in distribution market, demand for electronic shelf label system is increasing gradually to provide the accurate price immediately and detailed product information to consumers and reduce operation costs. Most of electronic shelf label system companies develop the full-graphic display device to display a wide variety of product information as well as the exact price. Our system had introduced Go-Back-N retransmission method in the early. However, we encountered performance problems that it delayed updating of the electronic shelf label system and exhausted the battery life time. Proposed adaptive image retransmission technique based on the selective scheme is that tags of electronic shelf label system recognize idle time of transmission cycle and require partial image retransmission to sever by itself. As a result, it can acquire much more opportunities of partial image retransmission within the same period and increase reception rate of full image for each tags. The experimental result shows that adaptive image retransmission technique's reception rate of full image for each tags is approximately 4% higher than existing previous works. And total battery life time increases 30 hours because tag reduce wake-up time as it receive only lost data instead of whole data.
In this paper, we propose Intelligent Driver Assistance System (I-DAS) for driver safety. The proposed system recognizes safety and danger status by analyzing blind spots that the driver cannot see because of a large angle of head movement from the front. Most studies use image pre-processing such as face detection for collecting information about the driver's head movement. This not only increases the computational complexity of the system, but also decreases the accuracy of the recognition because the image processing system dose not use the entire image of the driver's upper body while seated on the driver's seat and when the head moves at a large angle from the front. The proposed system uses a convolutional neural network to replace the face detection system and uses the entire image of the driver's upper body. Therefore, high accuracy can be maintained even when the driver performs head movement at a large angle from the frontal gaze position without image pre-processing. Experimental result shows that the proposed system can accurately recognize the dangerous conditions in the blind zone during operation and performs with 95% accuracy of recognition for five drivers.

In this paper, we deseribe a Medical Image Information System. Our system stores and manages 5 dimensional medical image data and provides the 3 dimensional medical data via the Internet. The Internet standard VR format. VRML(Virtual Reality Modeling Language) is used to represent the 3I) medical image data. The 3D images are reconstructed from medical image data which are enerated by medical imaging systems such ans CT(Computerized Tomography). MRI(Magnetic Resonance Imaging). PET(Positron Emission Tomograph), SPECT(Single Photon Emission Compated Tomography). We implemented the medical image information system shich rses a surface-based rendering method for the econstruction of 3D images from 2D medical image data. In order to reduce the size of image files to be transfered via the Internet. The system can reduce more than 50% for the triangles which represent the surfaces of the generated 3D medical images. When we compress the 3D image file, the size of the file can be redued more than 80%. The users can promptly retrieve 3D medical image data through the Internet and view the 3D medical images without a graphical acceleration card, because the images are represented in VRML. The image data are generated by various types of medical imaging systems such as CT, MRI, PET, and SPECT. Our system can display those different types of medical images in the 2D and the 3D formats. The patient information and the diagnostic information are also provided by the system. The system can be used to implement the "Tele medicaine" systems.
Volumetric image system has many applications recently in education, 3D movie, medical images but these applications have several problems that need to be overcome. Volumetric display may process a amount of visual data and design the high efficient vision system for realtime display. In case of stereo system for volumetric display motion vectors, disparity vectors from the stereoscopic sequences and residual images with the reference images has been transmitted, and the stereoscopic sequences have been reconstructed at the receiver for volumetric display. So central issue for the design of efficient volumetric image system lies in selecting an appropriate stereo matching and robust vision system. In this paper, we proposed high efficient vision system, which design vision stage with rotating and moving horizontally, and match the successive stereo image efficiently. In experimental results with volumetric image system, the proposed method represents high efficiency with minimizing error and low computational load for volumetric display.
In this paper, we propose a new progressive image transmission system including the image coding scheme that efficiently uses the relationship between the properties of a spatial image and its wavelet transform. Firstly, an original image is decomposed into several layers by the wavelet transform, and simultaneously decomposed into 2"x2" blocks. Each image is classified into two image types according to the standard deviations of its blocks. And then each block is categorized into two regions by different thresholds according to the image types, i.e., significant activity region (SAR) and insignificant activity region (IAR). Simulation results show that the proposed coding method has better performance than the EZW and SPIHT in terms of image quality and transmitted bit-rate. In addition, it can be applied to the applications requiring the progressive image transmission.nsmission.
A wide field-of-view (FOV) image contains more visual information than a conventional image. This study proposes a new type of hyperbolic mirror for wide FOV image acquisition. The proposed mirror consists of a hyperbolic cylindrical section and a bowl-shaped hyperbolic omnidirectional section. Using an imaging system with this mirror, it is possible to achieve a $213.8^{\circ}$ horizontal and a $126.94^{\circ}$ vertical maximum FOV. Parameters of each section of the mirror are designed to be continuous at the junction of the two parts, and the resultant image is seamless. The image-acquisition model is obtained using ray-tracing optics. To rectify the geometrical distortion of the original image due to the mirror, an image-restoration algorithm based on conformal projection is presented in this study. The performance of the proposed imaging system with the hyperbolic mirror and its image-restoration algorithm are verified by experiments.

In this paper, A simple image hologram encryption and decryption technique based on the principle of interference are proposed. The technique using the photorefractive material for getting a stable interference pattern is also proposed. And combine these two techniques, I would like to implement a stable optical information security system. In the encrypting process, I would generate binary phase hologram which can reconstruct original image perfectly, and regard this hologram as original image to be encrypted image. And then the hologram is encrypted as randomly generated binary phase image. Reference image is also generated from the encrypted image by applying interference rule. In the decrypting process, I can get a interference intensity by interfering the reference image and the encrypted image in the interferometer. and transform inferference intensity information into phase information. I recover original image by inverse Fourier transforming the phase information. In this process, the intensity information generated by interference of two images is very sensitive to external vibrations. So, I would like to get a stable interference using the characteristic of SPPCM(self pumped phase conjugate mirror) in photorefractive materials, especially BaTiO₃.
