Implementation of DSP Embedded Number-Braille Conversion Algorithm based on Image Processing (DSP 임베디드 숫자-점자 변환 영상처리 알고리즘의 구현)

  • This paper describes the implementation of automatic number-braille converter based on image processing for the blind people. The algorithm is consists of four main steps. First step is binary image conversion of the input image obtained by the camera. the second step is segmentation operation by means of dilation and labelling of the character. Next step is calculation of cross-correlation between segmented text image and pre-defined text-pattern image. The final step is generation of brail output which is relevant to input image. The computer simulation result was showing 91.8% correct conversion rate for arabian numbers which is printed in A4-sheet and practical possibility was also confirmed by using implemented automatic number-braille converter based on DSP image processing board.

  • In this paper, we proposed real-time relative radiometric calibration processing method for SWIR(Short Wavelength Infra-Red) sensor using 'Hyper-Spectral Imager'. Until now domestic research for Hyper-Spectral Imager has been performing with foreign sensor device. So we have been studying hyper spectral sensor device to meet domestic requirement, especially military purpose. To improve detection & identify capability in 'Hyper-Spectral Imager', it is necessary to expend sensing wavelength from visual and NIR(Near Infra-Red) to SWIR. We aimed to design real-time processor for SWIR sensor which can control the sensor ROIC(Read-Out IC) and process calibrate the image. To build Hyper-Spectral sensor device, we will review the SWIR sensor and its signal processing board. And we will analyze relative radiometric calibration processing method and result. We will explain several SWIR sensors, our target sensor and its control method, steps for acquisition of reference images and processing result.

  • In aquaculture industrial field, an automatic management and control system is needed to cope with the difficulties such as expensive wage, ripe age of management worker and risk according to the unexpected change of environmental conditions in the aquarium. This paper introduces an automatic aquarium monitoring and control system. The system is developed using PC single board computer. A PC can be connected to multi-single hoard computers, and the communication between PC and single board computers is based on RS-422/485 interfacing method. The physical data of pH, DO, temperature and water level etc. are real-timely treated in the single board computer though individual transducers, transfered to the main monitoring PC through RS-422/485 communication, and those data are graphically shown on the PC monitor. Furthermore, the environmental circumstance can be monitored through the image processing system, and the emergency system can be operated under the condition of environmental incident such as electric power stoppage, DO deficiency, pump shut down and low level water etc.

  • CNNs tend to take a long time to learn and consume a lot of power due to lack of system resources with many data processing units when there are repetitive handles that do not have high performance in the image field. In this paper, we propose a handling method based on a low-power bus that can increase the exchange rate of multipliers and multiplicands within the convolution mixer, which is a tendency activity that occurs when a convolution mixer has multiplication, which is the core element of combination. Convolutional neural networks have proprietary low-power shared processor support and the design was implemented on an Intel DE1-SoC FPGA board using Verilog-HDL. The experiments validated the performance by comparing it with the exchange rate of the multiplier originally proposed by Shen on MNIST's numeric image database.

  • In this paper vector code correlation(VCC) method and an algorithm to promote the image processing performance in building an effective measurement system using cameras are described for automatically berthing and controlling the ship equipped with side thrusters. In order to realize automatic ship berthing, it is indispensable that the berthing assistant system on the ship should continuously trace a target in the berth to measure the distance to the target and the ship attitude, such that we can make the ship move to the specified location. The considered system is made up of 4 apparatuses compounded from a CCD camera, a camera direction controller, a popular PC with a built in image processing board and a signal conversion unit connected to parallel port of the PC. The object of this paper is to reduce the image processing time so that the berthing system is able to ensure the safety schedule against risks during approaching to the berth. It could be achieved by composing the vector code image to utilize the gradient of an approximated plane found with the brightness of pixels forming a certain region in an image and verifying the effectiveness on a commonly used PC. From experimental results, it is clear that the proposed method can be applied to the measurement system for automatic ship berthing and has the image processing time of fourfold as compared with the typical template matching method.

Design of an Image Interpolator for Low Computation Complexity

  • In this paper, we propose an image interpolator for low computational complexity. The proposed image interpolator supports the image scaling using a modified cubic convolution interpolation between the input and output resolutions for a full screen display. In order to reduce the computational complexity, we use the difference in value of the adjacent pixels for selecting interpolation methods and linear function of the cubic convolution. The proposed image interpolator is compared with the conventional one for the computational complexity and image quality. The proposed image interpolator has been designed and verified by Verilog HDL(Hardware Description Language). It has been synthesized using the Xilinx VirtexE FPGA, and implemented using an FPGA-based prototype board.

  • Recently, the improvement of on-board satellite sensors covering hyperspectral image sensors, high spatial resolution sensors provide data on earth in diverse aspect. The application field relating remotely sensed data also varies depending on what type of job one wants. The various resolution of sensors from low to extremely high is also available on the market with a user defined specific location. The expense to purchase remote sensed data is going down compare to the cost it need past few years ago in terms of research or private use. Now, the satellite remote sensed data is used on the field of forecasting, forestry, agriculture, urban reconstruction, geology, or other research field in order to extract meaningful information by applying special techniques of image processing. There are many image processing packages available worldwide and one common aspect is that they are expensive. There need to be a advanced satellite data processing package for people who can not afford commercial packages to apply special remote sensing techniques on their data and produce valued-added product. The study was carried out with the purpose of developing a special satellite data processing package which covers almost every satellite produced data with normal image processing functions and also special functions needed on specific research field with friendly graphical user interface (GUI). And for the people with any background of remote sensing with windows platform.

  • In this paper, an algorithm is presented to recogniz the driving direction of a vehicle and obstacles in front of it based on highway road image. The algorithm employs a neural network with 27 sub sets obtained from the road image as its input. The outputs include the direction of the vehicle movement and presence or absence of obstacles. The road image, obtained by a video camera, was digitized and processed by a personal computer equipped with an image processing board.

  • In this paper, we implement robot which are ability to recognize obstacles and moving automatically to destination. we present two results in this paper; hardware implementation of image processing board and software implementation of visual feedback algorithm for a self-controlled robot. In the first part, the mobile robot depends on commands from a control board which is doing image processing part. We have studied the self controlled mobile robot system equipped with a CCD camera for a long time. This robot system consists of a image processing board implemented with DSPs, a stepping motor, a CCD camera. We will propose an algorithm in which commands are delivered for the robot to move in the planned path. The distance that the robot is supposed to move is calculated on the basis of the absolute coordinate and the coordinate of the target spot. And the image signal acquired by the CCD camera mounted on the robot is captured at every sampling time in order for the robot to automatically avoid the obstacle and finally to reach the destination. The image processing board consists of DSP (TMS320VC33), ADV611, SAA7111, ADV7l76A, CPLD(EPM7256ATC144), and SRAM memories. In the second part, the visual feedback control has two types of vision algorithms: obstacle avoidance and path planning. The first algorithm is cell, part of the image divided by blob analysis. We will do image preprocessing to improve the input image. This image preprocessing consists of filtering, edge detection, NOR converting, and threshold-ing. This major image processing includes labeling, segmentation, and pixel density calculation. In the second algorithm, after an image frame went through preprocessing (edge detection, converting, thresholding), the histogram is measured vertically (the y-axis direction). Then, the binary histogram of the image shows waveforms with only black and white variations. Here we use the fact that since obstacles appear as sectional diagrams as if they were walls, there is no variation in the histogram. The intensities of the line histogram are measured as vertically at intervals of 20 pixels. So, we can find uniform and nonuniform regions of the waveforms and define the period of uniform waveforms as an obstacle region. We can see that the algorithm is very useful for the robot to move avoiding obstacles.

A Study on the Analysis of Mucociliary Beat Frequency Using Image Processing (영상 처리 방법을 이용한 후각 상피 세포의 섬모 운동 특성 분석에 관한 연구)

  • Mucociliary transport is one of the essential defensive functions of the airway mucosa. In this paper, the objective and quantitative method of measuring CBF(Ciliary Beat Frequency) was developed based on the image processing method. Microscopic ciliary images are acquired through image processing board inside PC, and data necessary for the FFT(Fast Fourier Transform) analysis are extracted. By means of FFT analysis, maximum peak frequencies are found in each divided block of a whole acquired image. Finally using these frequencies, we compose a frequency map showing the spatial distribution of CBF's.
