According to the remarkable advances in sonar technology, positioning capabilities and computer processing power we can accurately image and explore the seafloor in hydrography. Especially, Multibeam Echo Sounder can provide nearly perfect coverage of the seafloor with high resolution. Since the mid-1990's, Multibeam Echo Sounders have been used for hydrographic surveying in Korea. In this study, new marine data set as an effective decision-making tool in various fields was proposed by visualizing and combining with Multibeam sonar data and marine spatial data sets such as satellite image and digital nautical chart. The proposed method was tested around the port of PyeongTaek-DangJin in the west coast of Korea. The Visualization and fusion methods are described with various marine data sets with processing. We demonstrated that new data set in marine GIS is useful in safe navigation and port management as an efficient decision-making tool.
Hippocampus is an important part of brain which is related with early memory storage and spatial navigation. By observing the anatomy of hippocampus, some brain diseases effecting human memory (e.g. Alzheimer, schizophrenia, etc.) can be diagnosed and predicted earlier. The diagnosis process is highly related with hippocampus segmentation. In this paper, hippocampus segmentation using Active Shape Model, which not only works based on image intensity, but also by using prior knowledge of hippocampus shape and intensity from the training images, is proposed. The results show that ASM is applicable in segmenting hippocampus from whole brain MR image. It also shows that adding more images in the training set results in better accuracy of hippocampus segmentation.

The suitcase can follow its owner all on its own via the Bluetooth connectivity in your phone. A robotic vacuum cleaner than can understand voice commands and even follow homeowner. Robots are used in a variety of applications such as a robot wheelchair. In this paper, I focus the problem of automatic return to the base in the process of developing the moving robot for loading things. In this paper, I propose the indoor localization method which is able to determine the position of the robot in the building by using image processing techniques.
We describe a method for localizing a mobile robot in the working environment using a vision system and VRML. The robot identifies landmarks in the environment and carries out the self-positioning. The image-processing and neural network pattern matching technique are employed to recognize landmarks placed in a robot working environment. The robot self-positioning using vision system is based on the well-known localization algorithm. After self-positioning, 2D scene is overlaid with VRML scene. This paper describes how to realize the self-positioning and shows the result of overlaying between 2D scene and VRML scene. In addition we describe the advantage expected from overlapping both scenes.

A new method for the catadioptric omnidirectional stereo vision with single camera is presented in this paper. The proposed method uses a concave lens with a convex mirror. Since the optical part of the proposed method is simple and commercially available, the resultant omnidirectional stereo system becomes versatile and cost-effective. The closed-form solution for 3D distance computation is presented based on the simple optics including the reflection and the reflection of the convex mirror and the concave lens. The compactness of the system and the simplicity of the image processing make the omnidirectional stereo system appropriate for real-time applications such as autonomous navigation of a mobile robot or the object manipulation. In order to verify the feasibility of the proposed method, an experimental prototype is implemented.
For robot navigation and visual reconstruction , structure from motion (SFM) is an active issue in computer vision community and its properties are also becoming well understood. As a drawback in SFM, it is well known that the SFM methods, using small motion model such as optical flow and direct method, have inevitably motion ambiguity between translation and rotation, which is called bas-relief ambiguity. In this paper based on the robust direct method using stereo image sequence, we present a new method for improving those ambiguities. Basically, the direct method uses nearly all image pixels for estimating motion parameters and depths, and global optimization techniques are adopted for finding its solution ...
For visual navigation, mobile robot can use a stereo camera which has large field of view. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to detect and recognize human face on the basis of such camera system. In this paper, a new coarse to fine detection algorithm is proposed. For coarse detection, nearly face-like areas are found in entire image using dual ellipse templates. And, detailed alignment of facial outline and features is performed on the basis of view- based multiple appearance model. Because it hard to finely align with facial features in this case, we try to find most resembled face image area is selected from multiple face appearances using most distinguished facial features- two eye...
In this paper, a blackboard-based road image understanding system is implemented. The 7 useful information which organized by the hierarchical manner are stored in the blackboard system. The 6 Knowledge source modules and the blackboard make the communications under the supervision of the control module. For a scene, each hypothesis is generated and then verified for every meaningful object. On the simulation results, the correct recognition ratio can be reached out 90%. It shows that the extraction of road information for the autonomous navigation can be obtained using the blackboard architecture.
This paper describes the path planning method in an unknown environment for an autonomous mobile robot equipped with CCD(Charge-Coupled Device) camera. The mobile robot moves along the guideline. The CCD camera is useful to detect the existence of a guideline. The wavelet transform is used to find the edge of guideline. Using wavelet transform, we can make an image processing more easily and rapidly. We make a fuzzy control rule using image data then make a decision the position and the navigation of the mobile robot. The center value that indicates the center of guideline is the input of fuzzy logic controller and the steering angle of the mobile robot is the fuzzy output. Some actual experiments for the mobile robot applied fuzzy control show that the mobile robot effectively moves to target position.
Based on object recognition technology, we present a new global localization method for robot navigation. For doing this, we model any indoor environment using the following visual cues with a stereo camera; view-based image features for object recognition and those 3D positions for object pose estimation. Also, we use the depth information at the horizontal centerline in image where optical axis passes through, which is similar to the data of the 2D laser range finder. Therefore, we can build a hybrid local node for a topological map that is composed of an indoor environment metric map and an object location map. Based on such modeling, we suggest a coarse-to-fine strategy for estimating the global localization of a mobile robot. The coarse pose is obtained by means of object recognition and SVD based least-squares fitting, and then its refined pose is estimated with a particle filtering algorithm. With real experiments, we show that the proposed method can be an effective vision- based global localization algorithm.
