  • This paper presents the navigation method for a mobile robot which uses a single camera and fluorescent lamp as a guide mark, projected on a convex mirror. The current position and heading direction of the mobile robot are obtained from the image of the guide mark. While the mobile robot travels to a goal position, the current position and heading direction of the mobile robot are updated continuously and the desired path and actual moving path are displayed on the monitor screen in real time. This proposed method eliminates the need to rotate the camera to track the guide mark, since a panoramic view of the surrounding area is available from the convex mirror, and natural guide marks such as usual florescent lamp on the ceiling or door frame can be used for navigation.

  • This paper describes the mechanism, guidance, sensor system, and navigation algorithm of METRO, a free ranging mobile robot. METRO is designed for use in structured surroundings or factory environments rather than unstructured natural environments. An overview of the physical configuration of the mobile robot is presented as well as a description of its sensor system, an omnidirectional laser range finder. Except for the global path planning algorithm, a guidance and a navigation algorithm with a local path planning algorithm are used to navigate the mobile robot. In METRO the computer support is divided into a supervisor with image processing and local path planning and a slave with motor control. The free ranging mobile robot is self-controlled and all processing being performed on board.

  • The safe navigation of a mobile robot requires the recognition of the environment in terms of vision processing. To be guided in the given path, the robot should acquire the information about where the wall and corridor are located. Also unexpected obstacles should be detected as rapid as possible for the safe obstacle avoidance. In the paper, we assume that the mobile robot should be navigated in the flat surface. In terms of this assumption we simplify the correspondence problem by the free navigation surface and matching features in that coordinate system. Basically, the vision processing system adopts line segment of edge as the feature. The extracted line segments of edge out of both image are matched in the free nevigation surface. According to the matching result, each line segment is labeled by the attributes regarding obstacle and free surface and the 3D shape of obstacle is interpreted. This proposed vision processing method is verified in terms of various simulations and experimentation using real images.

  • Current accuracy of GPS is within the meter level, which is sufficient for route guidance of car navigation system(CNS). But receiving condition of GPS signal varies time to time according to surrounding objects such as building, trees, and terrain. For this reason, the performance of the route guidance is degraded in urban region. In this paper, to improve the performance of the route guidance of CNS, we propose a method for determining location of vehicle using a location of the traffic signal and its pixel size extracted from real-time Image.

  • Navigation in environments that are densely cluttered with obstacles is still a challenge for Autonomous Ground Vehicles (AGVs), especially when the configuration of obstacles is not known a priori. Reactive local navigation schemes that tightly couple the robot actions to the sensor information have proved to be effective in these environments, and because of the environmental uncertainties, STSF(Space and Time Sensor Fusion)-based fuzzy behavior systems have been proposed. Realization of autonomous behavior in mobile robots, using STSF control based on spatial data fusion, requires formulation of rules which are collectively responsible for necessary levels of intelligence. This collection of rules can be conveniently decomposed and efficiently implemented as a hierarchy of fuzzy-behaviors. This paper describes how this can be done using a behavior-based architecture. The approach is motivated by ethological models which suggest hierarchical organizations of behavior. Experimental results show that the proposed method can smoothly and effectively guide a robot through cluttered environments such as dense forests.

  • This paper addresses estimation of the relative shift vector from aerial image sequences. We perform similarity function tests and decide the most appropriate similarity function for the visual navigation system using aerial images. Finally, we propose the maximum variance reference line selection method for reducing the estimation error of the shift vector.

  • Moving pixel displacement detection algorithm using correlation functions for making panorama image on the continuous images is presented in this paper. The input images get from a CMOS image sensor (CIS). The camera is maintained by constant brightness and uniform sensing area in test input pattern. For simple navigation and capture image has to 70% overlapped region. A correlation rate in two image data is evaluated by using reference image with first captures, and compare image with next captures. The displacement of the two images are expressed to second order function of x, y and solved with finding the coefficient in second order function. That results in the change in the peak correlation displacement from the reference to the compare image, is moving to pixel length. The navigating error is reduced by varying the path because the error is shown in the difference of the positioning vector between the true pixel position and the navigated pixel position. The algorithm performance is evaluated to be different from the error vector to vary the navigating path grid.

  • Detection and classification of underwater objects in sonar imagery are challenging problems. This paper proposes a system that detects and identifies underwater objects at the sea floor level using a sonar image and image processing techniques. The identification process of underwater objects consists of two steps; detection of candidate regions and identification of underwater objects. The candidate regions of underwater objects are extracted by image registration through the detection of common feature points between the reference background image and the current scanning image. And then, underwater objects are identified as the closest pattern within the database using eigenvectors and eigenvalues as features. The proposed system is expected to be used in efficient securement of Q route in vessel navigation.

  • This study has been carried for the development of the basic algorithm of helicopter navigation system based on TRN (Terrain Referenced Navigation) with information input from the GPS. The helicopter determines flight path due to Origination-Destination analysis on the Cartesian coordinate system of 3-D DTM. This system shows 3-D mesh map and the O-D flight path profile for the pilot's acknowledgement of the terrain, at first. The system builds TCF (terrain clearance floor) far the buffer zone upon the surface of ground relief to avid the ground collision. If the helicopter enters to the buffer zone during navigation, the real-time warning message which commands to raise the body pops up using Matlab menu. While departing or landing, control of the height of the body is possible. At present, the information (x, y, z coordinates) from the GPS is assumed to be input into the system every 92.8 m of horizontal distance while navigating along flight path. DTM of 3" interval has been adopted from that which was provided by ChumSungDae Co., Ltd..

  • The conventional assistive tool for visually impaired people provide Simple service using a ultrasound, or an RFID tag to identify the obstacles. It is impossible to clear guide and has a vulnerability to unforeseen circumstances because of short recognition distance, The ARM Cortex-A9 Platform based implementation of the Portable Navigation System and Service Center will help the visually impaired gait. The Service Center will also provide solution for the lack of jobs due to the increase of the aging population. Navigation System that the visually impaired can carry possessing devices such as a camera, GPS, Audio, Ethernet transmit Image shown at the location of the visually impaired, GPS information and Sound Via TCP / IP. The staff of the service center receives information and can provide directions by communicating with them. So, the system can provide effective guidance to the visually impaired.
