  • We present an efficient algorithm for skew correction of business card images obtained by a PDA (personal digital assistant) camera. The proposed method is composed of four parts: block adaptive binarization (BAB), stripe generation, skew angle calculation, and image rotation. In the BAB, an input image is binarized block by block so as to lessen the effect of irregular illumination and shadow over the input image. In the stripe generation, character string clusters are generated merging adjacent characters and their strings, and then only clusters useful for skew angle calculation are output as stripes. In the skew angle calculation, the direction angles of the stripes are calculated using their central moments and then the skew angle of the input image is determined averaging the direction angles. In the image rotation, the input image is rotated by the skew angle. Experimental results shows that the proposed method yields skew correction rates of about 93% for test images of several types of business cards acquired by a PDA under various surrounding conditions.

  • The performance of morphological image segmentation heavily depends on a proper selection of markers. In this paper, we propose a marker incubator where only a catchment basin that has grown sufficiently large through flooding simulation is registered as a marker. Marker incubator does following things at each flooding level; growing defined marker regions, finding new marker regions, and postponing irrelevant regions to be examined at the next level. The examination for a region to be a valid marker is performed by two size-oriented criterions that are derived from the structuring element size of a morphological filter. The simulation result shows that the image segmentation with the proposed marker incubator achieves the comparable image quality to Wang's method in a less number of markers even without region merging. Additionally, since the proposed method also performs better in terms of image quality and information for transmission, it is well suited for region-based image coding.

  • In this paper, we present a content-based image retrieval method which is based on the feature extraction in the wavelet transform domain. In order to overcome the drawbacks of the feature vector making up methods which use the global wavelet coefficients in subbands, we utilize the energy value of wavelet coefficients, and the shape-based retrieval of objects is processed by moment which is invariant in translation, scaling, rotation of the objects The proposed methods reduce feature vector size, and make progress performance of classification retrieval which provides fast retrievals times. To offer the abilities of region-based image retrieval, we discussed the image segmentation method which can reduce the effect of an irregular light sources. The image segmentation method uses a region-merging, and candidate regions which are merged were selected by the energy values of high frequency bands in discrete wavelet transform. The region-based image retrieval is executed by using the segmented region information, and the images are retrieved by a color, texture, shape feature vector.

  • In this paper, to extract object regions in stereo image, we propose an enhanced algorithm that extracts objects combining both of brightness information and disparity information. The approach that extracts objects using both has been studied by Ping and Chaohui. In their algorithm, the segmentation for an input image is carried out using the brightness, and integration of segmented regions in consideration of disparity information within the previously segmented regions. In the regions where the brightness values between object regions and background regions are similar, however, the segmented regions probably include both of object regions and background regions. It may cause incorrect object extraction in the merging process executed in the unit of the segmented region. To solve this problem, in proposed method, we adopt the merging process which is performed in pixel unit. In addition, we perform the bi-directional stereo matching process to enhance reliability of the disparity information and supplement the disparity information resulted from a single directional matching process. Further searching for disparity is decided by edge information of the input image. The proposed method gives good performance in the object extraction since we find the disparity information that is not extracted in the traditional methods. Finally, we evaluate our method by experiments for the pictures acquired from a real stereoscopic camera.

  • In this paper, as a prior study related to the generation of topographic information using the CAS500-1/2 satellite, we propose a method of extraction DSM for each 1:5000 scaled map in North Korea using KOMPSAT-3A strip images. This technique is designed to set the processing area by receiving shape file, only to generate output for every 1:5000 scaled map. In addition, dense point clouds and the DSM were extracted by applying MDR, a robust stereo image matching technique. Considering that the strip images are input in the units of scenes, we attempted to extract a DSM by processing and merging multiple image pairs in one 1:5000 map area. As a result, it was possible to confirm the generation of an integrated DSM with minimal separation at the junction, and as a result of the accuracy analysis, it was confirmed that the accuracy was within 5m compared to GCP.

  • Chromakey method is one of key technologies for realizing virtual studio, and the blue portions of a captured image in virtual studio, are replaced with a computer generated or real image. The replaced image must be changed according to the camera parameter of studio for natural merging with the non-blue portions of a captured image. This paper proposes a novel method to extract camera parameters using the recognition of pentagonal patterns that are painted on a blue screen. We extract corresponding points between a blue screen. We extract corresponding points between a blue screen and a captured image using the projective invariant features of a pentagon. Then, calculate camera parameters using corresponding points by the modification of Tsai's method. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method is more accurate compared to conventional method and can process about twelve frames of video per a second in Pentium-MMX processor with CPU clock of 166MHz.

  • This study used the multistage hierarchical clustering image classification to analyze the satellite images for the land-cover types of an area in the Korean peninsula. The multistage algorithm consists of two stages. The first stage performs region-growing segmentation by employing a hierarchical clustering procedure with the restriction that pixels in a cluster must be spatially contiguous, and finally the whole image space is segmented into sub-regions where adjacent regions have different physical properties. Without spatial constraints for merging, the second stage clusters the segments resulting from the previous stage. The image classification of hierarchical clustering, which merges step-by step two small groups into one large one based on the hierarchical structure of digital imagery, generates a hierarchical tree of the relation between the classified regions. The experimental results show that the hierarchical tree has the detailed information on the hierarchical structure of land-use and more detailed spectral information is required for the correct analysis of land-cover types.

  • This paper proposes a new approach to eliminate the reflectance component for the localization of text in natural scene images. Natural scene images normally have an illumination component as well as a reflectance component. It is well known that a reflectance component usually obstructs the task of detecting and recognizing objects like texts in the scene, since it blurs out an overall image. We have developed an approach that efficiently removes reflectance components while Preserving illumination components. We decided whether an input image hits Normal or Polarized for determining the light environment, using the histogram which consisted of a red component. In the normal image, we acquired the text region without additional processing. Otherwise we removed light reflecting from the object using homomorphic filtering in the polarized image. And then this decided the each text region based on the color merging technique and the Saliency Map. Finally, we localized text region on these two candidate regions.

  • This paper presents the new obstacle avoidance method that is composed of vision and sonar sensors, also a navigation algorithm is proposed. Sonar sensors provide poor information because the angular resolution of each sonar sensor is not exact. So they are not suitable to detect relative direction of obstacles. In addition, it is not easy to detect the obstacle by vision sensors because of an image disturbance. In This paper, the new obstacle direction measurement method that is composed of sonar sensors for exact distance information and vision sensors for abundance information. The modified splitting/merging algorithm is proposed, and it is robuster for an image disturbance than the edge detecting algorithm, and it is efficient for grouping of the obstacle. In order to verify our proposed algorithm, we compare the proposed algorithm with the edge detecting algorithm via experiments. The direction of obstacle and the relative distance are used for the inputs of the fuzzy controller. We design the angular velocity controllers for obstacle avoidance and for navigation to center in corridor, respectively. In order to verify stability and effectiveness of our proposed method, it is apply to a vision and sonar based mobile robot navigation system.
