Pulverized coal is widely used as the source of electrical power generation and industrial processes. Numerical analysis on the transient ignition process of the cloud of pulverized coal particles in various cases is carried out. Particle radius, initial particle temperature, number density are chosen as major parameters that influence the characteristics of ignition and combustion. The result can be summarized as follow. The ignition occurs at the position that is closed to the surface of the cloud. Maximum temperature and velocity appear at ignition point, and the concentrations of gaseous fuel and oxidizer decrease rapidly near the ignition point. The chemical reaction takes place in wider zone as number density and particle radius decrease. The ignition delay is shortest when particle radius is about $50\;{\mu}m$, and tends to be shorter as number density and initial ambient temperature increase.

High combustion efficiency of hydrogen could make it an ideal source of green energy in the future. At this time, high pressure vessel is the most reasonable method of storing hydrogen. However, such a high pressurized vessel could pose a critical threat if ruptured. For this reason, it is important to understand the mechanism of hydrogen's self-ignition when a high-pressure hydrogen released into air. This paper presents several visualization images as experimental results using high-speed camera. From the visualization images, the ignition is initiated near rupture disk immediately after failure of disk. And the initial ignition and flame is stronger as a rupture pressure increases. However, this ignition region do not affect the general self-ignition mechanism when a high-pressure hydrogen is released into air through tue after failure of disk.
Hydrogen is considered a cleaner energy source than fossil fuels. As a result, the use of hydrogen in daily life and economic industries is expected to increase. However, the use of hydrogen energy is currently limited because of safety issues. The rate of combustion of the hydrogen mixture is about seven times higher than that of hydrocarbon fuels. The hydrogen mixture is highly flammable and has a low minimum ignition energy. Therefore, it presents considerable risks for fire and explosions in all areas of hydrogen manufacturing, transportation, storage, and use. In this study, the auto-ignition characteristics of hydrogen were investigated numerically for diluted hydrogen mixtures. Auto-ignition temperature, a critical property predicting the fire and explosion risk in hydrogen combustion, was determined in well-stirred reactors. When N2 and CO2 were used to dilute the hydrogen/air mixture, the ignition delay time increased with increasing dilution ratios in both cases. The CO2-diluted mixtures exhibited a longer ignition delay than the N2-diluted mixtures. We also confirmed that lower initial ignition temperatures increased the ignition delay times at 950 K and above. Overall, the auto-ignition characteristics, such as the concentrations of participating species and ignition delay times, were primarily affected by the initial temperature of the mixture.

The synthetic breaking test method was developed to evaluate the breaking performance of ultra high-voltage circuit breaker and made up of two independent circuits; current source circuit and voltage source circuit. In application of this test method, it is necessary to extend the arc of the test breaker. So, the new re-ignition system using VTGS (Vacuum Triggered Gap-Switch) was constructed to improve the efficiency and reliability of this test. In this re-ignition system, VTGS operates in high vacuum state of $5{\time}10^{17}$torr and control system consists of the triggering device and the air M-G (Motor-Generator). This re-ignition system showed the operating characteristics, such as delay time ($t_d$) and jitter time ($t_j$ not exceeding 5us and 1us respectively, and had the operating voltage of $25\~150kVdc$ at the gap distance of 24mm.
Research to discuss the fire performance of materials requires tools for measuring their burning characteristics and validated fire growth models to predict fire behavior of the materials under specific tire scenarios using the measured properties as input for the models. In this study, burning characteristics such as time to ignition, weight loss rate, flame spread, heat release rate, total heat evolved, and effective heat of combustion for four types of wood-based materials were evaluated using the cone calorimeter and inclined panel tests. Time to ignition was affected by not only surface condition and specific gravity of the tested materials but also the type and magnitude of heat source. Results of weight loss rate, measured by inclined panel tests, indicated that heat transfer from the contacted flame used as the heat source into the inner part of the specimen was inversely proportional to specific gravity of material. Flame spread was closely related with ignition time at the near part of burning zone. Under constant and severe external heat flux, there was little difference in weight loss rate and total heat evolved between four types of wood-based panels. More applied heat flux caused by longer ignition time induced a higher first peak value of heat release rate. Burning characteristics data measured in this study can be used effectively as input for fire growth models to predict the fire behavior of materials under specific fire scenarios.

For Lab-scale Hybrid Rocket's Ignition, It is needs of heat source to vaporize solid fuel. We used Nichrome wire which has a electric resistance for ignition. But Ignition system by using Nichrome wire is not only the disposable system, but also the system which has an affect on the Hybrid rocket's structures(nozzle throat diameter). The new Ignition system composed of Butane+propane gas' supply devices and spark plug. RPL(Rocket Propulsion Lab.) perform the hybrid rocket experiments over 50 times by using new ignition system. The fact that is possible to throttle the Thrust in hybrid rocket is confirmed.
This paper investigates a power supply of medium voltage with enhanced ignition characteristics for plasma torch. Series resonant half-bridge topology is presented to be a suitable ignition circuitry. The ignition circuitry is integrated into the main power conversion system of a multi-phase staggered three-level dc-dc converter with a diode front-end rectifier. The plasma torch rated for 3MW, 2kA and having the physical size of 1m long is selected to be a high enthalpy source in waste disposal system. The steady-state and transient operations of plasma torch are simulated. The parameters of Cassie-Mary arc model are calculated based on 3D magneto-hydrodynamic simulations. Circuit simulation waveform shows that the ripple of arc current can be maintained within ${\pm}10%$ of its rated value under the existence of load disturbance. This power conversion configuration provides high enough ignition voltage around 5KA during ignition phase and high arc stability under the existence of arc disturbance noise resulting in a high-performance plasma torch system.
For the better understanding of the stability of turbulent combustion, more researches on extinction and re-ignition are needed. Flame interactions in non-premixed flame have also not been greatly researched. We made a hybrid twin jet flame, the combinations of diffusion flame and partially-premixed diffusion flame, in a twin jet counterflow configuration. The extinction limits of a crossed twin jet counterflow have been extended in comparison with those of a one-dimensional counterflow because of flame interactions through heat transfer and joint ownership of various radicals. Besides, we have obtain ignition $Damk\"{o}hler$ number by experimental method without external ignition source using the extinction characteristic in a crossed twin jet counterflow flame. From results, we can identify the hysteresis between extinction and ignition $Damk\"{o}hler$ number in S-curve.

Surgical fires require an ignition source, oxidizer, and fuel. The pulsed dye laser (PDL) has been shown to be effective in the treatment of hypertrophic scars and keloids in dermatology. With the increasing number of applications of $CO_2$, laser as ignition source has been associated with operating room fires in the otorhinolaryngologic field. There have been many case reports on PDL-induced fires in dermatology, but until now, there were no reports in the larynx. We describe a 57-year-old patient diagnosed with laryngeal hyperkeratosis treated by PDL-assisted laryngomicrosurgery. In this case, we experienced incidental PDL tip flaring during pulsed dye laser vaporization.

In order to investigate the initiation and propagation processes of a spherical detonation wave induced by direct initiation, numerical simulations were carried out using two-dimensional compressible Euler equations with an axisymmetric assumption and a one-step reaction model based on Arrhenius kinetics with various levels of ignition energy. By varying the amount of ignition energy, three typical initiation behaviors, which were subcritical, supercritical and critical regimes, were observed. Then, the ignition energy of more than $137.5{\times}10^6$ in non-dimensional value was required for initiating a spherical detonation wave, and the minimum ignition energy(i.e., critical energy) was less than that of the one-dimensional simulation reported by a previous numerical work. When the ignition energy was less than the critical energy, the blast wave generated from an ignition source continued to attenuate due to the separation of the blast wave and a reaction front. Therefore, detonation was not initiated in the subcrtical regime. When the ignition energy was more than the minimum initiation energy, the blast wave developed into a multiheaded detonation wave propagating spherically at CJ velocity, and then a cellular pattern radiated regularly out from the ignition center in the supercritical regime. The influence on ignition energy was observed in the cell width near the ignition center, but the cell width on the fully developed detonation remained constant during the expanding of detonation wave due to the consecutive formation of new triple points, regardless of ignition energy. When the ignition energy was equal to the critical energy, the decoupling of the blast wave and a reaction front appeared, as occurred in the subcrtical regime. After that, the detonation bubble induced by the local explosion behind the blast wave expanded and developed into the multiheaded detonation wave in the critical regime. Although few triple points were observed in the vicinity of the ignition core, the regularly located cellular pattern was generated after the onset of the multiheaded detonation. Then, the average cell width on the fully developed detonation was almost to that in the supercritical regime. These numerical results qualitatively agreed with previous experimental works regarding the initiation and propagation processes.
