In order to investigate the initiation and propagation processes of a spherical detonation wave induced by direct initiation, numerical simulations were carried out using two-dimensional compressible Euler equations with an axisymmetric assumption and a one-step reaction model based on Arrhenius kinetics with various levels of ignition energy. By varying the amount of ignition energy, three typical initiation behaviors, which were subcritical, supercritical and critical regimes, were observed. Then, the ignition energy of more than $137.5{\times}10^6$ in non-dimensional value was required for initiating a spherical detonation wave, and the minimum ignition energy(i.e., critical energy) was less than that of the one-dimensional simulation reported by a previous numerical work. When the ignition energy was less than the critical energy, the blast wave generated from an ignition source continued to attenuate due to the separation of the blast wave and a reaction front. Therefore, detonation was not initiated in the subcrtical regime. When the ignition energy was more than the minimum initiation energy, the blast wave developed into a multiheaded detonation wave propagating spherically at CJ velocity, and then a cellular pattern radiated regularly out from the ignition center in the supercritical regime. The influence on ignition energy was observed in the cell width near the ignition center, but the cell width on the fully developed detonation remained constant during the expanding of detonation wave due to the consecutive formation of new triple points, regardless of ignition energy. When the ignition energy was equal to the critical energy, the decoupling of the blast wave and a reaction front appeared, as occurred in the subcrtical regime. After that, the detonation bubble induced by the local explosion behind the blast wave expanded and developed into the multiheaded detonation wave in the critical regime. Although few triple points were observed in the vicinity of the ignition core, the regularly located cellular pattern was generated after the onset of the multiheaded detonation. Then, the average cell width on the fully developed detonation was almost to that in the supercritical regime. These numerical results qualitatively agreed with previous experimental works regarding the initiation and propagation processes.

The ignition quality of ignition system is influenced by spark energy, discharge pattern of spark energy and spark duration. In this paper, the characteristics of multiple spark ignition system have been investigated for various number of spark and spark interval. The results, which were compared with those obtained with a standard single spark ignition, show that engine output is increased, and lean misfire limit is extended with the multiple spark ignition system. The most effective number of spark at the most effective spark interval that are determined by engine performance test, were 6 times spark at 0.02ms spark interval. For the above condition of spark, engine torque was increased about 20% comparing with conventional ignition system and lean misfire limit was extended to air-fuel ratio 22.5:1. This study researched the rate of heat release and quantity of heat release influenced by a condition of spark on the mass burned in order to investigate the relationship between the rate of mass burned and number of spark times.
Chemical oxygen demand (COD), phytoplankton cell number and chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl-a), sediment mean grain size and ignition loss were studied to determine their temporal trends in the study area. Historical data of COD, cell number and Chl-a were gathered from the late 1960s or early 1980s to 1997, and trends in temporal domain were obtained from a simple regression. Sediments for grain size and ignition loss (as organic contents in sediments) were sampled from the Chokchon macrotidal flat bimonthly from September 1990 to November 1996, and were analyzed using the decomposition method of time series analysis. In general, the first three data showed increasing trends based on regression analysis. The trends of sediment grain size fluctuated in a neutral pathway while those of ignition loss yielded no increasing pattern. In contrast with the suggestions from Ahn and Choi (1998) who reported a coarsening variation in sediment grain size to be a cause of the directional and remarkable changes of macrofaunal communities in this area, we could not find such a corresponding variation pattern from our samples. In diagnosing eutrophication, a paradoxical phenomenon was encountered between the trends in water column (COD, cell number and Chl-a) and sediment (ignition loss) data. In this paper, we inferred the possible processes that produce the discrepancy. Some explanations and biological responses to eutrophication were predicted and discussed.

The fabrication and firing test of the ignition system for a micro solid propellant thruster are described in the present paper. Pt igniter coil was patterned on the glass membrane that was fabricated by the wet etching process. The thickness of Pt layer was $2000{\AA}$ and the width of igniter pattern was $40{\mu}m$. The thickness and diameter of glass membrane were $15{\mu}m$ and 1 mm, respectively. Ignition test was performed. Successful ignition of HTPB/AP propellant was obtained with an ignition delay of 1.6 s at an input voltage of 12 V. The ignition energy was estimated to be 1.4 J.
This study examined the growth characteristics and carbonization pattern when a fire occurs due to a flammable liquid sprinkled on a vinyl floor. When acetone was sprinkled on a floor, the flame reached its peak in approximately 0.2 s after it was ignited. The lower part of the flame showed a laminar pattern while the upper part showed a turbulent pattern. The pattern showed a turbulent pattern and generated white smoke. The combustion completed floor surface showed carbonization of a dim pore pattern. In the case of benzene, an intense flame was formed in approximately 0.6 s after ignition. The flame length was measured to be approximately 50 mm. When the flame became weak, a significant amount of black smoke was generated due to incomplete combustion. The combustion completed floor surface showed carbonization of a pour pattern and splash pattern. In the case of alcohol, an intense flame was formed in approximately 1.1 s after ignition. In addition, the depth of carbonization was significant where the flammable liquid was collected and a trace of carbonization was observed at the boundary of the flow path of the flammable liquid.
The low-emission and high-performance diesel combustion is an important issue in the combustion research community, In order to understand the detailed diesel flame involving the complex physical processes, it is quite desirable to diesel spray dynamics, auto-ignition and spray flame propagation. Dynamics of fuel spray is a crucial element for air-fuel mixture formation, flame stabilization and pollutant formation, In the present study, the diesel RCM (Rapid Compression Machine) and the Electric Control injection system have been designed and developed to investigate the effects of injection pressure, injection timing, and intake air temperature on spray dynamics and diesel combustion processes, In terms of the macroscopic spray combustion characteristics, it is observed that the fuel jet atomization and the droplet breakup processes become much faster by increasing the injection pressure and the spray angle, With increasing the cylinder pressure, there is a tendency that the of spray pattern in the downstream region tends to be spherical due to the increase of air density and the corresponding drag force, Effects of intake temperature and injection pressure on auto-ignition is experimently analysed and discussed in detail.

An experimental study was carried out to investigate the combustion characteristics of the slinger combustor. A combustion test rig was manufactured and installed in KARI combustor test facility. From the ignition test results, we found that there were two major factors influencing the ignition limits; by increasing the rotational speed and the air mass flow rate, a better ignition performance was attained. From the combustion test results, we obtained 99.6% combustion efficiency, 15% pattern factor, and 3% profile factor. The results in this work indicate that the ignition and combustion characteristics of a slinger combustor are markedly different from those of a conventional annular combustor.

The solution of two-dimensional deflection of circular wavy reinforcing fiber elastics was obtained for one end clamped boundary under concentrated load condition. The fiber was regarded as a linear elastic material. Wavy shape was described as a combination of half-circular arc smoothly connected each other with constant curvature of all the same magnitude and alternative sign. Also load direction was taken into account. As a result, the solution was expressed in terms of a series of elliptic integrals. These elliptic integrals had two different transformed parameters involved with load value and initial radius of curvature. While we found the exact solutions and expressed them in terms of elliptic integrals, the recursive ignition formulae about the displacement and arc length at each segment of circular section were obtained. Algorithm of determining unknown parameters was established and the profile curve of deflected beam was shown in comparison with initial shape.
