  • We have studied the catalytic combustion of soot particulate over perovskite-type oxides prepared by malic acid method. The catalysts were modified to enhance the activity by substitution of metal into A or B site of perovskite oxide. In addition, the reaction conditions, such as temperature, $O_2$ concentration, space velocity have been studied. The effect of $SO_2$ pretreatment and water introduced into reactants were also examined. In the $LaCoO_3$ catalyst, the partial substitution of alkali metals into A site enhanced the catalytic activity in the combustion of soot particulate and the activity was shown in the order : Cs>K>Na; In the $La_{0.6}Cs_{0.4}CoO_3 $; catalyst, the substitution of Fe or Mn showed no effect on the ignition temperature. The ignition temperature decreased with increasing $O_2$ concentration and contact time. The introduction of water into reactants feed decreased the ignition temperature and the pretreatment of $SO_2$ showed no effect on the catalytic activity.

  • Currently, due to the serious world-wide air pollution by substances emitted from vehicles, emission control is enforced more firmly and it is expected that the regulation requirements for emission will become more severe. Anew concept combustion technology that can reduce the NOx and PM in relation to combustion is urgently required. Due to such social requirement, technologically advanced countries are making efforts to develop an environment-friendly vehicle engine at the nation-wide level in order to respond to the reinforced emission control. As a core combustion technology among new combustion technologies for the next generation engine, the homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) is expanding its application range by adopting multiple combustion mode, catalyst, direct fuel injection and partially premixed combustion. This study used a 2-staged injection method in order to apply the HCCI combustion method without significantly altering engine specifications in the aspect of multiple combustion mode and practicality by referring to the results of studies on the HCCI engine. And it is investigated that the effects of the engine rpm and load(or A/F) to emission characteristics.

  • In order to reduce exhaust omissions of spark ignition engine, it is important not only to improve catalyst conversion efficiency but also to directly reduce engine out exhaust emissions, during cold starting and warm up process. Therefore many researchers have been attracted to develop an early fuel evaporator(EFE) by Introducing a ceramic heater fur a solution of engine out exhaust emissions in SI engine. But, the performance of the EFE in MPI engine to reduce the exhaust emissions and to improve the cold startability has not been clarified yet. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of a glow plug far EFE. Impinging spray using heated and unheated glow plug helps the vaporization of the fuel and heat up the three way catalyst sufficiently. The amount of CO, and UHC is reduced overall. The amount of NOx is higher at the initial stage, but become lower as time goes on than without glow plug.

  • This work was conducted to investigate the oxidation characteristics of methane having the highest ignition temperature among the other hydrocarbon gases using transition metal catalysts. The catalyst used for methane oxidation was manganese oxide having a various oxidation number, such as MnO, $MnO_2$, $Mn_2O_3$, $Mn_3O_4$, $Mn_4O_5$. The manganese oxide(MnxOy) catalyst is impregnated on $TiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$ for methane oxidation. To enhanced both of activity and life time of catalysts, Ni and Co was used as a promoter. In this study, various co-catalysts were synthesized by using excess wet impregnation method. The effect of reaction temperature and space velocity was measured to calculate the activity of catalysts such as, activation energy of $T_{50}$, and $T_{90}$. The life time of bi-metallic manganese mixture, such as Mn-Co and Mn-Ni catalysts, were increased more 10 % than manganese oxide catalyst, but activity of those was decreased slightly.

  • This paper reports the preliminary firing test performed with an ADN-based monopropellant using a 5 N scale thruster. ADN-based propellant and catalyst was fabricated and catalytic combustion of propellant was characterized by DSC-TG analysis. Although an explosion in the catalyst bed was occurred, high temperature in the catalyst bed obtained and demonstrated catalytic combustion of the propellant. Preliminary test results motivates the research for catalysts with better thermal stability.

  • The Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) engine concept allows for both NOx and particulate matter to be reduced simultaneously, and it is a promising way to meet the next environmental challenges. Unfortunately, HCCI combustion often increases CO and HC emissions. The development of oxidation catalyst (OC) requires high conversion efficiency for CO and HC at low temperature. Conventional oxidation catalyst technologies may not be able to convert these emissions because of the saturation of active catalytic sites. The OC used in this study was 600 cpsi cordierite. Three kinds of OC with different amounts of Pt and Pd were used. The influence of the space velocity (SV), $H_2O$ and $O_2$ concentration was also studied. All types of OCs were found to have over 90% CO conversion efficiencies at $170^{\circ}C$. When in the presence of water vapor, CO conversion was increased, but $C_3H_8$ conversion was decreased. The performance of the OC was not influenced by initial the HC concentration. The 2Pt/Pd catalyst was better in terms of thermal aging than the Pt-only catalyst. The $LOT_{50}$ of both fresh and aged OC was increased with increasing SV and with the presence of $H_2O$.

  • The effects of spark timing and exhaust valve timing change on exhaust gas temperature during cold start period of an SI engine are studied through engine bench tests. The exhaust gas temperature increases when the spark timing or valve timing are retarded individually, due to late combustion or slow flame speed. Therefore, exhaust gas temperature shows a large increase when the two timings are retarded simultaneously. However, it is considered that combustion stability during cold start deteriorated under these retarded conditions. To increase exhaust gas temperature for fast warmup of catalysts while maintaining combustion stability, an optimal condition for spark and valve timing retard should be applied for the cold start period.

  • An emphasis has been placed on the importance of selecting a sand for furan sand process, which ie affected by the properties of sand. Investigations have been carried out to use the domestic artificial sands for the furan sand process. For laboratory investigations, the sands have been prepared and tested for chemical analysis, loss on ignition, sieve analysis, AFS grain fineness number, grain shape, PH value, acid demand, surface shape, theoretical surface area, moisture absorption, crushing durability and compressive strength and S. S. I. of molding sands. Most commercial sands have been found to be able to be used. The main requirement of the sands has been shown to be that 3 or 4 screen sands, AFS no.40-70 (or 100), of low acid demand, good surface area and good grain shape require less resin and catalyst to give an adequate strength.

  • General characteristics of hydrogen and the ratio change of the two forms of hydrogen(ortho-hydrogen and para-hydrogen) as a function of the temperature were introduced. The unique characteristics of hydrogen, such as a wide range of flammability limits, low minimum ignition energy, low maximum inverse temperature, and hydrogen embrittlement were introduced. The process of producing the liquid hydrogen using pre-cooling and expansion engine and ortho-para conversion using the catalyst were introduced. Finally, the characteristics and the considerations as a propellant for liquid rocket were reviewed.

  • High reaction heat evolved from the oxidation of Al was used to synthesize SiC, which might be difficult to be formed by SHS. Al2O3-SiC composite powder was easily manufactured using KNO3 as an ignition and reaction catalyst. Unreacted Si and C were observed after reaction dependent upon the composition of starting powders, reaction atmosphere and relative densities of compacted bodies. The unreacted carbon could be removed by calcining at $600^{\circ}C$ and the remaining Si could be removed by dissolving in NaOH solution. The final powder particles were smaller than 1${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in size.
