한국의 가스터빈엔진 연소기 연구개발 동향 (Research and Development Trend of Gas Turbine Combustor in Korea)

  • The research and development history of the gas turbine combustor in Korea is introduced briefly. It is very important to understand the fuel spray, mixing phenomena in achieving combustion performance. In this paper, two kinds of fuel injection system such as duplex fuel injector and rotary spray system are introduced in developing gas turbine combustor in Korea. The extensive experimental research of fuel spray, ignition, performance and endurance rig test makes gas turbine combustor successfully in Korea.

  • Prototype NBI(Neurtal Beam Injector), which Is tested at KAERI(Kaeri Atomic Energy Research Instutide), is the facility for tokamak plasma Ignition of the advanced nuclear fusion KSTAR(Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research). New NBI facility, which is the part of KSTAR tokamak, will be constructed during next three years. This investigation is focused on the preliminary test to construct the control system for KSTAR NBI, before KSTAR NBI facility is constructed.

압축착화 엔진에서 함산소 혼합연료의 연소 및 미세입자 배출물 특성 (Combustion and Nano-particulate Emissions Characteristics of a Compression Ignition Engine Fueled with Oxygenated Blending Fuel)

  • An experimental investigation was conducted to analyze the effects of biodiesel-ethanol and biodiesel-diesel blended fuels on the characteristics of combustion and exhaust emissions, and size distributions of particulate matter in a single cylinder diesel engine. The three types of test fuel were biodiesel and two blended fuels which were added ethanol and diesel by 20 % volume based fraction into biodiesel, respectively. In this study, the injection rate, combustion pressure, exhaust emissions and size distributions of particulate matter were measured under various injection timings and injection pressures. The experimental results show that biodiesel-ethanol blended fuel has lengthened ignition delay and low combustion pressure in comparison with those of biodiesel and biodiesel-diesel blended fuel even if all fuels indicated similar trends of injection rate under equal injection pressures. In addition, the ethanol blended fuel significantly reduced nitrogen oxidies (NOx) and soot emissions. And then the size distribution of particulate matters shows that blended fuels restrain the formation of particles which were beyond the range of 150nm comparison with biodiesel fuel.

  • An experimental study was conducted to investigate the effects of EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) variables on performance and emission characteristics in a 2-liter 4-cylinder spark-ignition LPG fuelled engine. The effects of EGR on the reduction of thermal loading at exhaust manifold were also investigated because the reduced gas temperature is desirable for the reliability of an engine in light of both thermal efficiency and material issue of exhaust manifold. The steady-state tests show that the brake thermal efficiency increased and the brake specific fuel consumption decreased with the increase of EGR rate in hot EGR and with the decrease of EGR temperature in case of cooled EGR, while the stable combustion was maintained. The increase of EGR rate or the decrease of EGR temperature results in the reduction of NOx emission even in the increase of HC emission. Furthermore, decreasing EGR temperature by $180^{\circ}C$ enabled the reduction of exhaust gas temperature by $15^{\circ}C$ in cooled EGR test at 1600rpm/370kPa BMEP operation, and consequently the reduction of thermal load at exhaust. The optimization strategy of EGR application is to be discussed by the investigation on the effect of geometrical characteristics of EGR-supplying pipe line.

마이크로프로세서를 이용한 엔진점화시기 제어장치 (A Study on Spark Advance Control System using Microprocessor)

  • In order to improve the combustion efficiency of the agricultural engine, an ignition timing control system was developed and tested. The control system was composed of the CDI ignition circuit, the microcomputer and the interfacing devices. In this study, the simplicity of the control system and the flexibility of the control strategy were emphasized for the precision, the applicability and the economical efficiency. The hardware was consisted in almost the same compositions as those of the automobile engine. The softwares of the control algorithms were developed to three types depending on the combination of the quasi-adaptive control and the open loop control which had the different spark advance equations according to the input variables such as engine speed, exhaust gas temperature and brake torque. The test results were summarized as follows: 1. By using the computer control system, the fuel consumption efficiency could be improved and the fuel consumption could be reduced by 0 to 57% compared to that of the fixed spark advance system. 2. The fuel consumption of the control mode with the quasi-adaptive algorithm was reduced by average 0.8% compared to that of the control mode without quasi-adaptive algorithm. 3. It was found that the control mode with the quasi-adaptive algorithm adopting single input of engine speed had most applicability and economical efficiency among three types of the control algorithms.

2성분 혼합연료를 이용한 감압비등 분무특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Spray Characteristics of Flash Boiling Using Two Component Mixing Fuel)

  • This experimental study was conducted to investigate macroscopic characteristics of the flash boiling spray with tow component mixing fuel. Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) is a newer combustion method for internal combustion engines to reduce nitrogen oxide and particulate matter simultaneously. But it is difficult to put this combustion method to practical use in an engine because of such problems as instability of combustion in low load operating conditions and knocking in high load operating conditions. In HCCI, combustion characteristics and exhaust emissions depend on conditions of air/fuel mixture and chemical reactions of fuel molecules. The fuel design approach is achieved by mixing two components which differ in properties such as density, viscosity, volatility, ignitability and so on. We plan to apply the fuel design approach to HCCI combustion generated in a real engine, and examine the possibility of mixture formation control using the flash boiling spray. Spray characteristics of two component fuel with a flash boiling phenomenon was investigated using Shlieren and Mie scattering photography. Test fuel was injected into a constant volume vessel at ambient conditions imitated injection timing BTDC of a real engine. As a result, it was found that a flash boiling phenomenon greatly changed spray structure, especially in the conditions of lower temperature and density. Therefore, availability of mixture formation control using flash boiling spray was suggested.

  • Recently rise in oil prices feet the burden on not only diesel vehicle driver but also LPG vehicle driver, and get interested in various way to reduce fuel costs. In this study discuss on exhaust emissions characteristics on driving cycle mode and ignition advance condition change of CNG/LPLI Bi-Fuel vehicle. Experimental test was performed by changing the conditions of fuel (LPG/CNG), spark advance (Base, $10^{\circ}CA$, $15^{\circ}CA$), and driving mode (FTP-75, HWFET, and NEDC). In case of CO emission, in the order of CNG Base, CNG S/A10, S/A15 condition are average reduced -21%, -35%, -29% respectively compared to LPG fuel. The active emission reduction from the initial engine start, spark retard is likely to be beneficial in catalyst warm-up and improve combustion stability rather than spark advance.

The Performance and Emissions Analysis of a Multi Cylinder Spark Ignition Engine with Gasoline LPG & CNG

  • The introduction of alternative fuels is beneficial to overcome the fuel shortage and reduce engine exhaust emissions. LPG and CNG are relatively clean fuel and considered as most promising alternative automotive fuels worldwide because of its emission reduction potential and lower fuel price compared to gasoline. Now a day’s adaptation of dual fuel approach is the growing as common trend. The two fuels can be successfully implemented with existing gasoline engine with little modification. The present study was done to analyze the performance and emissions analysis of a multi cylinder spark ignition engine fuelled with the benefits of CNG and LPG aseffective alternate automotive fuels by simply using them in an unmodified petrol engine. The test results indicate, the energy content of CNG and LPG is the most limiting factor in acceptance for fuel economy and performance reasons. Thermal efficiency was high for CNG lowest for gasoline and LPG between the two. BSFC, CO and HC were low and NOx was high for CNG and low for gasoline, LPG lies between the two.

  • 국산 플라이애쉬 6종류에 대한 AE제의 흡착특성(吸着特性)을 살펴 본 결과 플라이애쉬 입자의 AE제흡착(吸着)은 30분 정도에서 거의 완료되었으며 강열감량이 클수록 포화흡착량이 크게 나타났다. 플라이애쉬 강열감량의 대부분은 미연소탄소(未燃燒炭素)이며 따라서 미연소탄소량이 AE콘크리트 중의 공기량을 감소시키는 요인임을 알았다. 한편, 유동화제(流動化劑)의 경우 플라이애쉬 입자의 포화흡착량은 시멘트보다 적으며 시멘트의 경우보다 분산성(分散性)도 다소 낮으나 플라이애쉬를 혼합한 콘크리트에 유동화제를 사용할 경우 유동성이 저하되는 현상은 없었다.

  • Combustion phenomena in a sub-millimeter scale combustor have been investigated. To evaluate scale effect on flame propagation characteristics, a cylindrical combustion chamber with variable depth was built in-house. The combustor was charged with premixed gas of hydrogen and air and ignited electronically. A piezo electric pressure transducer recorded transient pressure after the ignition. Measurements were made at different test conditions specified with chamber depth and initial pressure as parameters. Visual observation was made through a quartz glass window on top side of the combustion chamber using high speed digital video camera. From the pressure data, available work was estimated and compared with energy input required for stable ignition. The preliminary results suggested that the net thermal energy release is sufficient to generate power and enables a combustor of the size in the present study to be used as the energy source of a micro power devices .
