  • The cigarette holds more than 10 percents of the entire fire accidents despite the number of smokers rapidly decreases every year. The purpose of this study is to examine the ignition characteristics of cigarette by experimentation. This study analyzed the cases of fires inferred that they were caused by cigarette in Incheon during 2006. As the representative ignition materials, corrugated board, gasoline, lacquer thinner, tarpaulin, flexible PVC sheet, and poly ethylene were tested. In this experimentation, the corrugated board was ignited by cigarette. However gasoline, lacquer thinner, tarpaulin, flexible PVC sheet, and poly ethylene were seldom ignited. Meanwhile most fire investigators have argued that oils and tents were ignited by cigarette, but this study experimentally proved that such an argument might be ungrounded.

  • The present study has been performed to investigate the ignition characteristics of a n-dodecane fuel droplet on the hot surface. Simplified bench scale test setup was built to examine the effect of air flow on the ignition temperature of fuel droplet. IR pyrometric sensor was used to measure the surface temperature, the measured temperature using IR pyrometer was directly compared with k-type thermocouple. The ignition of n-dodecane fuel droplet was divided into two stage - cool flame and hot flame - with the air flow rate except the case of air flow rate 3.0 lpm. The ignition temperature and probability was greatly affected by the air flow rate and the MHSIT of the present study was about $300^{\circ}C$ for air flow rate of 0.5 lpm.

  • The practical route for disposal of sewage sludge becomes energy recovery by combustion after its ocean dumping is banned in 2012 in Korea. Due to the high moisture content, however, sewage sludge is required to be dried before transport and combustion. In this study, pyrolysis and combustion characteristics of dried sewage sludge was investigated in a small-scale fixed bed reactor in order to provide fundamental data for energy recovery of the fuel. As the first step of combustion, the primary products of pyrolysis were analyzed in a fixed bed reactor for the condensable volatiles (tar), non-condensable gases, and char. For the combustion characteristics, another fixed bed reactor was constructed to monitor the weight and temperature of the fuel particles during ignition and combustion under different air flow rates. The test results were used to derive the ignition and burning rates.

  • In this study , a simple method has been developed to detect the required spark voltage by using the primary spark voltage instead of the secondary spark voltage. Through engine motoring experiments, this method testified to be quite satisfactory. Though the required spark voltage is affected by many in-cylinder conditions, temperature is one of the most important factors. The temperature increases significantly by combustion and the required spark voltage also changes by the temperature during the expansion stroke. On the basis of this fact, misfire can be monitored by comparing the required spark voltage between compression stroke and expansion stroke. So, in this study, two step ignition method is introduced to monitor combustion at expansion stroke. The test result shows that this method can be used to detect complex misfire pattern.

  • Close to high power radio/radar transmitters there is a possibility that sparks may be occur at discontinuities in metallic structures. If these structures are in an area in which a flammable mixture may be present, there is a possibility that a fire or explosion may be caused by the sparking. A number of assessment procedures for quantification of the hazard have been produced. This paper reviews the bases of the British Standard covering ignition hazards by radio-frequency radiation and presents some ignition test apparatus to access these hazards.

  • UEGI (Unburned Exhaust Gas Ignition) is an alternative method for fast light-off of a catalyst. It ignites the unburned exhaust mixture using two glow plugs installed in the upstream of the close-coupled catalysts. In addition, a hydrocarbon adsorber was applied to the UEGI, for more effective reduction of HC emission. Engine bench tests show that the CCC reaches the light-off temperature laster than the baseline exhaust system and HC and CO emissions are reduced significantly during the cold start. From the vehicle test, it was observed that a few amount of HC emission was reduced even the catalysts were aged. It is expected to develop a solution kit applicable to a new vehicle or used one, to meet the emission regulation

  • Since the oil shock of 1970's there was a strong upward tendency for the use of the high viscosity and poorer quality fuels. Therefore the misfiring engine occurs due to the decrease of quantity injected for lean burn and emission control in Compression Ignition Common Rail Direct Injection diesel engine. In this study, it is designed and used the test bed which is installed with fuel injector controller. In addition to equipped engine using CRDI by controlling the injection timing with mapping modulator, it has tested and analyzed the engine performance and combustion characteristics, as it is varied that they are the operating parameters: fuel injected quantity, engine speed and injection timing.

  • In order to measure the acoustic amplification factor of an Al/HTPB propellant, T-burner tests using pulsed DB/AB method were conducted. In the experiment, powdered aluminum content was varied to a certain extent. Simultaneous ignition on the internal surface of a propellant was achieved by the use of a fast ignition disk. From the experimental data, the damping factor for a non-zero aluminum content could not be calculated due to the fast attenuation of perturbed pressure. Therefore, the addition of aluminum particle was more than sufficient to stabilize pressure-coupled instability.

  • Ignition Safe-Arm-Unit using micro-electromechanical systems(MEMS) for propulsion system was designed and manufactured. MEMS was designed according to the design schemes for conventional mechanical elements. By comparing the design results and the test data of the prototype, small discrepancy was found, which is due to the nonlinear characteristic of the structure and the machining accuracy. The applicability of MEMS for Safe-Arm-Unit was proved by testing MEMS which is assembled into SAU.

  • A catalyst ignitor of small thrust engine using hydrogen peroxide and kerosene was designed and fabricated, which confirmed mass flow rate for design pressure through the water cold-flow test in this study. In order to investigate ignition performance, it was changed that mixture ratio for kerosene mass flow rate in a position which heat of hydrogen peroxide decomposition comes to a steady state. And we confirmed stable ignition property in a wide range of mixture ratio.
