  • Exothermic and ignition characteristic of igniter is very important factor in engine performance. Since the igniter performance is effected by Hydrogen Peroxide decomposition rate, we have to test the preliminary catalyst performance test. In this report, after making igniter using hydrogen peroxide/kerosene, a thermal characteristic were examined by comparing hydrogen peroxide mass and catalyst mass. And then we study ignition characteristic of the affects of O/F ratio using the previous data.

  • This study aims to acquire a basic clustering technology of hybrid rocket motor for lunar lander, including the oxidizer flow distribution characteristic and the simultaneous ignition characteristic. The experimental setups were established to conduct a series of ground firing test of a clustered motor. The gaseous oxygen (GOX) and the HDPE (High Density PolyEthylene) were used as the oxidizer and the solid fuel, respectively. Experimental results which are the simultaneous pyrotechnic ignition characteristic, the oxidizer distribution characteristic and the pressure traces of each combustion chamber imply that the hybrid rocket clustered motor works successfully.

  • For developing the ignition device for the interceptor of Korean active protection system, the design parameters of the ignition device which should have a short ignition delay time and sufficient energy for propellant ignition were studied. The electric primer instead of mechanical primer was adopted for deceasing delay time, and ignition code was used for decreasing the time difference of flame propagation from the flame holes. The developed ignition device showed the ignition delay time of a few ms. When the designed ignition device was applied to the open-type propulsion devices, the stable interior ballistic characteristic was showed in a firing test.

  • The purpose of the present work is to investigate the effect of gasoline-premixing on a combustion and emissions characteristics in a compression ignition engine. For studying combustion characteristics, a combustion pressure and rate of heat release (ROHR) were measured using a single-cylinder DI compression ignition engine with a common-rail injection system and premixed fuel injection system. In addition, exhaust emissions characteristics were studied using emission analyzers and smoke meter. The experimental results showed that the case of gasoline-premixing had longer ignition delay and lower combustion pressure compared to the cases of diesel direct injection. Furthermore, premixed gasoline-air mixture reduced NOx emissions due to low peak of ROHR.

  • The study was conducted experimentally on characteristic of thermal decomposition and minimum ignition temperature of magnesium dusts. For this purpose, three different Mg dusts of mean diameter (38, 142, $567{\mu}m$) were used. Experimental investigations were conducted by using TGA(Thermo gravimetric analysis) and MIT(Minimum Ignition Temperature) apparatus made in accordance with IEC 61241-2-1 standard. As the results, temperature of weight gain in Mg dust layers increased with increasing of heating rates in air and, under the same heating rate condition, minimum ignition temperature increased with particle size. Also the MIT of suspended Mg dust clouds tended to increase with increasing of mean diameter.

  • Six different size of torch-ignition device were applied in a constant volume combustion chamber for evaluating the effects of torch-ignition on combustion. The torch-ignition device was designed for six different volumes and same orifice size. The combustion pressures were measured to calculate the mass burn fraction and combustion enhancement rate. In addition, the flame propagations were visualized by shadowgraph method for the qualitative comparison. The result showed that the combustion pressure and mass burn fraction were increased when using the torch ignition device. And the combustion duration were decreased. The combustion enhancement rates of torch-ignition cases were improved in comparison with conventional spark ignition. Finally, the visualization results showed that the torch-ignition induced faster burn than conventional spark ignition due to the earlier transition to turbulent flame and larger flame surface, during the initial stage. Finally, the initial flame propagation was affected by torch-ignition volume.

  • Auto ignition characteristic is an important factor for handling combustible substance and fire prevention. This research studied about auto ignition characteristic and activation energy of Ethylene Glycol (EG) and Diethylene Glycol (DEG) by using ASTM D2155 type ignition temperature measuring apparatus. As the auto ignition temperatures, it was possible to get $434^{\circ}C$ for EG within sample amount range of $75{\sim}160{\mu}l$ and $387^{\circ}C$ for DEG within sample amount range of $130{\sim}150{\mu}l$. Also, it was possible to get $579^{\circ}C$ and $569^{\circ}C$ as instantaneous ignition temperatures with sample amount of $140{\mu}l$ for EG and DEG respectively. By using least square method from Semenov equation on measured ignition temperature and ignition delay time from this study, it was possible to calculate activation energy of EG as 25.41 Kcal/mol and DEG as 14.07 Kcal/mol. Therefore, it was possible to claim that DEG has more risk of auto ignition since the auto ignition temperature, instantaneous ignition temperature and activation energy of DEG is lower than EG.

  • Autoignition characteristic is an important factor of all combustible substances, and a critical determinant in assessing the effectiveness of fire hazard prevention. This study investigated the autoignition characteristic of mixtures of Ethylene Glycol and water using an ASTM D2155 type ignition temperature measuring apparatus. It was possible to get the minimum temperature as $434^{\circ}C$ from 100% Ethylene Glycol within range of $75{\sim}160{\mu}l$. A volume of $100{\sim}125{\mu}l$ of a mixed sample of Ethylene Glycol and water (80 : 20) was ignited at the same temperature ($434^{\circ}C$). Also it was possible to get the auto ignition temperature as $437^{\circ}C$ from a mixed sample of Ethylene Glycol and water (60 : 40) within range of $120{\sim}160{\mu}l$. The instantaneous ignition temperatures determined for $125{\mu}l$ of each of the three samples were $579^{\circ}C$, $595^{\circ}C$ and $611^{\circ}C$, respectively. Both auto ignition temperatures and instantaneous ignition temperatures were increased through the addition of water to the samples.

  • Characteristic of aluminum ignition under high temperature and high pressure is studied using lasers. The laser ablation method is used to generate aluminum particles exposed to a high pressure by using a nanosecond pulsed laser where the range of ablation pressure varies between 0.35 and 2.2 GPa. A $CO_2$ laser is used to supply radiative heat to the aluminum target surface for providing high temperature ranging between 5000~9300 Kelvin. The ignition is confirmed using spectroscopy analysis of AlO vibronic band 484 nm wavelength. Also the radiative temperature is measured in various high pressure range for tracing the ignition temperature in high pressure conditions.

  • Wallpaper has been used for decorating wall with multifarious patterns and colors. Ignition characteristic of wallpapers depends upon the types of wallpapers and their components. Since the wallpaper is made of flammable cellulose fibers diverse materials are being used as flame retardant in producing wallpapers. In this paper the ignition characteristics wallpapers prepared with three different fillers and pretreated polyester fibers were examined. Also the effect of calendering on ignition characteristics was investigated. Commercial papers were used for checking the effect of calendering on the ignition characteristics of treated paper In this experiments, guanidine sulfomate was used as flame retardant.
