  • This study examines the importance of group identity (kin, friends, co-workers) when gift recipient changes among American and Korean consumers. Female college students and academicians completed a self-administered questionnaire. Four hundred fifty-eight respondents evaluated the perceived importance of group identity when buying an apparel gift for kin, friends, and co-workers. The results suggest that the importance of group identity may influence the type of gift a recipient receives. The results show that when buying a gift for kin, friends, and co-workers that both young and older American consumers place greater importance on self rather than the opinion of other group. The older and younger Korean respondents rated the opinion of each group (kin, friends, and co-workers) to be more important than self. Recommendations for future research on the affect of culture on consumer purchases are suggested.

  • In recent years, the relationship of language maintenance to culture and identity has received increased attention in the language acquisition and education fields. Korean immigrants in the U.S. form one of the biggest Asian groups and their language and cultural maintenance has been a major issue for both parents and ESL teachers. The present research is designed to investigate the cultural and social identities as well as the psychological investment factors that contribute to heritage language maintenance. Three Korean immigrant families in a small Midwest university town in the U.S. were surveyed and later interviewed. Issues and strategies concerning their children's Korean education in the U.S., coupled with the competing goal for the children to learn English were documented through parent interviews and interviews with school-aged focal children. Strategies and stances that facilitate or hinder both heritage and target language maintenance goals are presented along with participants' major reasons for heritage language maintenance in their homes and via Saturday schools. This work will assist ESL teachers and sociolinguists in situating both Korean student and parent goals in the context of shifting cultural and linguistic identities in countries where they have immigrated.

  • This survey research examined the effectiveness, gender identity and the satisfaction of life of female leaders in government, in relation to the organizational culture regarding gender discrimination. The respondents were high -ranking (above 5th grade) male (N=154) and female (N=150) leaders in government and the supervisors (N= 139) of the female leaders. The results demonstrated that the effectiveness of female leaders was rated lower as she helped her junior females at work more as a mentor, while she was rated as being more effective as her leadership style became more relationship-oriented. The satisfaction of life of female leaders was higher as she engaged more in mentoring to the junior females and as she had more positive gender identity. However, life satisfaction became lower as the organizational culture became more discriminating toward females. The discriminating organizational culture was also correlated negatively with the interpersonal relationship between females(especially the relationship with the female seniors). These results are indicating that the behaviors, the effectiveness ratings and the satisfaction of life of female leaders in Government are restricted by the gender -discriminating organizational culture and the cultural stereotypes of the members in the organization.

The hidden curriculum can be defined from various perspectives. However, these definitions commonly include the concept of the whole experience students gain from school life in implicit ways, even though the school does not intend it. The hidden curriculum is related to non-cognitive areas and the culture formation of students in various way, including positive and negative content, and is important since once this curriculum is formed, it has a long-term impact. Therefore, it is necessary to consider not only the formal curriculum but also the hidden curriculum in order to apprehend the overall educational outcome of medical school. For this purpose, schools need to not only support studies on the hidden curriculum but also to endeavor to provide faculty and staff with educational and administrative support so that they can understand the hidden curriculum and be equipped as a role model. Furthermore, medical students need to endeavor to form a positive student culture in order to establish an appropriate identity as a doctor in the future.

  • Korea has a dark age in terms of culture in the last 20th century. Korea had been struggling between the Great Powers of the world in the imperialism and had sacrifice to keep our own culture itself. Japanese imperialist's a invasion, culture liquidation by Japan, Independence from Japan, Korean war and Influence by US are major bitter historical affair after close of Chosun Dynasty in the process of modernization. Therefore Korea couldn't stay in the center of world cultural core parts and was degraded as cultural consumption country which was provided oversea culture by other countries. Then Korea couldn't develop our unique traditional idea and culture. In the meantime there are both extreme phenomena; one is expulsion of other cultures absolutely and the other is only following western culture unconditionally like trimming policy in the end of colony age. These discreet and unfiltered western culture had been influenced Korea culture over the wide range strongly and resulted in cultural colony situation to produce western imitation culture without philosophy and traditional spirit. Even though Korea has met opportunity in the culture, we called "Han Trend", no formation of own culture is main reason for psychological panic. Korea furniture design is one of parts of lost of tradition culture and typical parts in reproducing western imitation culture. As a result furniture industry's major reason for loss value as exporting industry compared to other industries result in most of the furniture products without our unique identity. This situation become more deepen unfortunately. This report would like to suggest the direction of design with global competition capability and cultural identity to boost Korean furniture design industry by comparing, analyzing and speculating between design of Chosun dynasty and philosophy of modernism in western.
