This paper is a study of culture and identity expressed in textile art works of the age of globalization, centering on the Beijing International Fiber Art Biennale. This study began with the idea that globalism would develop regional cultural diversity as well as contribute to the field of art. In 2000, the Beijing International Fiber Art Biennale held its first large exhibition, and a total of 10 biennales were held from then until 2018. Get an understanding of the Beijing International fiber art Biennale, and select award-winning works from one to ten times to learn about cultural characteristics and identity. The analysis was based on the works of awards from China and Japan, including Korea, which are the center of East Asian culture. The Beijing International Fiber Art Biennale has steadily increased the number of participating countries, writers and works, and once again opened the stage for the revival of textile art following the Lausanne International Tapestry Biennale. Through the Beijing International Fiber Art Biennale, textile artists hope to promote world harmony in textile art, respect cultural diversity and conduct equal dialogue between East and West cultures.
Using the observation technique and in-depth interview, the current study compared various aspects of multicultural education between Korea and Canada and suggested the direction Korea's multicultural education needs to take. As a part of class curriculum, the researcher interviewed the representative of Ansan Foreign Center (AFC) and the president of the Kosian's House, a NGO for multicultural educations. The observations and experiences of the researcher were also used in this study. The results of the current study are as follows. First, multicultural education is provided for the minority group in Korea, whereas multiculturalism is included and taught for every student in Canada. In addition, the current multicultural education of Korea focuses on language and culture acquisition to help the students to adjust. Canada, on the other hand, focuses on accepting other cultures and ethnic equality, creating both identities as their ethnic origin and as Canadians. Second, in language educations, both countries had students enrolled in lower school years than their age. However, the differences occurred in terms of emotional support and availability of expert teachers. Third, comparing teacher's attitude towards multicultural education, Korean teachers were not free from perceiving the multicultural student as 'different', whereas Canadian teachers have been taught since little to consider multicultural students as Canadians, but accept their ethnic backgrounds. Based on the results, the current study suggested multicultural education program for the majority group, increase in number of expert language teachers and teaching assistants, and an education program to teach multiculturalism as part of an identity of humankind. The limitations and suggestions for future studies were provided afterwards.
This paper addresses questions on the marginalized position of youths of 'Gangbuk' and elucidates how they construct their own identities in the individual trajectories of everyday life. Three years of research, including participatory observation and in-depth interviews, was conducted on nine students from Northeastern district of Seoul. The research also adopted reflexive photography interview method in order to encourage the informants to actively participate in the research. The result illustrates the diversity of the everyday life experiences. More 'marginalized' youths from middle to lower class background had to endure the burdens of their daily lives without programs. Still, they were elaborating their own cultural taste and positive self-narratives at the periphery of the mainstream culture, by practicing music, online community activities and bodily performances. They had to negotiate the crucial turn of life after their graduation, when they entered into the harsh social competition with limited resources. We observed how they gradually assimilate the identity of the 'working youth', some of them developing a positive valorization of their experiences labor. Findings underline the active role of the cultural practices in the making of class identity of the youth and the necessity of researches situating the making of class identity and the reproduction of the class for the youth in the larger geography of class culture in the contemporary Korean society. Lastly, it is argued that these youths should not be considered as determined subjects, who reproduce already established class identities, but as active agents of their lives who deserve more respects and attentions from the society.

From the stages of formation, to the processes of change, the alleys with long history not only reflect on the trends of the area, but also have a historical and cultural value as a place where the local residents make living and socialize. However, due to the rapid growth of the city's civilization, and industrialization, there has been a great amount of loss in the roles of the rural areas while urban areas have been expanding over time. The rural areas including the old alleys have been neglected and fell far behind in the processes of growth overall, and therefore, it became harder to trace the old days as well as the old emotion that we used to see. Nowadays, there are various cases in terms of alley regeneration project as people are getting more interested in it. The alley regeneration projects can be divided into two different backgrounds; a part of urban regeneration project by the government and local organizations and the other developed by the trends. This research, with successful case studies, is for analyzing the direction of the ultimate goal and the identity that only the alleys have. As the alleys contain history, tradition and culture of the community, we need to not only preserve but also maintain all of these since it will affect the goal and the establishment of identity of the alley regeneration projects as a significant factor. In addition, in order to attract visitors from diverse cultures, providing cultural or artistic experiences and aesthetic landscapes will be importantly considered as an additional factor for the research. In other words, through this research, I would like to demonstrate that it is the most important for the alleys fell far behind to establish its identity for continuous successful eyre generation projects, which are not temporary.
In this study of acculturation strategies and adjustment in Korean-Chinese and Chinese-Korean children, 273 Korean-Chinese and 207 Chinese-Korean were asked about levels of assimilation to the mainstream language and culture, ethnic identity, emotional attitude toward their schools, teachers' support, peers' support, and social distance from the mainstream. Results revealed that separation was the most preferred strategy followed by integration, assimilation, and marginalization for both subject groups. Children categorized by separation strategies reported highest scores in school adjustment variables and lowest scores in social distance. There were some differences between Korean-Chinese and Chinese-Korean children in cultural assimilation, ethnic identity, emotional attitude toward school, and teacher's support. These findings were explained by their immigration history and the uniqueness of each mainstream society.
This study reviewed Korean food recipes and food culture included in English cookbooks issued in the United States from the 1930s to the early 1970s. In the 1930s cookbook, many types of soup were introduced to Korean food under the influence of the Tangban culture in the Joseon dynasty and a brief description of 'Sinseollo' culture. The 1940s cookbooks, introduced Korean table settings, food culture, and cooking methods depending on the use of chopsticks. In the 1950s cookbooks, Korean foods were selected to suit a Western table setting, and detailed explanations were included along with 'cheopsu' means the number of dishes served in Korean food. More diverse Korean food was introduced within its culture and origins in the 1960s cookbooks. The 1970s cookbooks explained, the characteristics of Korean culinary specialties that differentiated from oriental food. This study of Korean food and culture from Cookbooks issued in the United States from the 1930s to 1970s, where Eastern and Western multiculturalism coexist, can be used as baseline data to understand the identity of modern Korean food culture and the direction of the globalization of Korean food.
Purpose - This study investigated the relationship among cultural disposition (Chemyeon, Noonchi, Woozzul), media use, and attitude toward luxury goods consumption. Research design, data, and methodology - We analyzed online survey data for 300 Korean Women between 20 and 39 years of age who lived in Seoul, capital of South Korea. We used multiple regression analysis to examine the relative influence of cultural orientation on cognition of luxury goods, Sobel test. to determine mediating effect, and a two-way analysis of variance in IBM SPSS 23.0. Results - The finding suggests that cultural disposition (Chemyeon, Noonchi, conspicuous Woozzul) correlated significantly with perceived self-identity, attitude toward luxury goods. The effects of Chemyeon, Noonchi, and selfish Woozzul on the attitude toward luxury goods was fully mediated by perceived self-identity. However, association between conspicuous Woozzul and attitude toward luxury goods was partially mediated by perceived self-identity. Regarding media effects, the results indicate that there were interaction effects between selfish Woozzul and amount of time spent on TV on attitude toward luxury goods, as well as between selfish Woozzul and amount of time spent on Internet. Conclusions - These findings suggest that luxury goods consumption of Korean young women is consumer behavior that reflects individual cultural disposition and media use.
This writing is to understand some trends and its meaning of Regionalism Architecture in Jeju Island since 1950's. This thesis began with an interest in the identity crisis implicit in the simultaneous striving for modernism and the so-called regional values in Jeju Island. Regionalism is a response in architectural terms to re-establish continuity in a given place between past and present forms, and also a unique result related to particular places, cultures and climates in region. This is one way of looking at the issues of regional identity. The study began by observing the general characteristics of contemporary ideas on Regionalism in Jeju architecture. This means that tracing the history of development of Regionalism architecture in research area is not the focus of this thesis. The thesis demonstrates that Regionalism architectures in Jeju shows some trends related to the local cultural elements (or ideas) such like traditional architectural forms, natural environment, local construction-materials, etc. In summation, in the perspective of Regionalism architecture, mostofbuildingsin Jeju bring out them only as vernacular architecture as it was once produced, by the simple combination and imitation without any creative interaction of the regional culture. I stress the point in this paper that, in over the last fifty years, there have been very narrowed attempts to design the regional values in the main, and also point out that there are problems in the manner in which local architects have gone about trying to define the regional themes. So, a grate depth is required to understand the phenomenon that Jeju area is with its various nuances of traditions, art, culture, climate and light and then to reinterpret it into the modern building type with all the high sense. In addition to that, some conclusions are reached on future directions and the significance of the study.
This paper deals with the tradition and identity of physical expression(${\bar{a}}{\dot{n}}gika$ abhinaya) system in Indian traditional theatre and dance. The ${\bar{a}}{\dot{n}}gika$ abhinaya of Indian dance and theatre has been stylized through long terms and thereby defines their identity and peculiarity by its highly stylized expression techniques while following dramatic way($n{\bar{a}}tya$-dharmi). The ${\bar{a}}{\dot{n}}gika$ abhinaya is said to had been derived from the ritualistic practice of ancient Vedic period(B.C. 15th-B.C. 5th c.), which is most clearly exemplified in hand gesture(hasta mudra). In $N{\bar{a}}tya$${\acute{S}}astra$, ${\bar{a}}{\dot{n}}gika$ abhinaya is explained in detail. It is classified broadly into facial expression(mukhaja abhinaya), gesture expression(śārīra abhinaya), movement expression($cest{\bar{a}}krita$ abhinaya). Further, $N{\bar{a}}tya$${\acute{S}}astra$ divides their various usages by parts which include head, glance, eyes, nose, eyelid, cheek, lower lip, chin, mouth, hand, chest, waist, belly, hip. thigh, claf, foot. Besides, it explains diverse ways of foot movement($c{\bar{a}}ri$), standing poses(sthana), gait(gati) and their combined movements(mandala). Many forms of Indian traditional theatre and dance basically follows the rule of ${\bar{a}}{\dot{n}}gika$ abhinaya proposed in $N{\bar{a}}tya$${\acute{S}}astra$, which identifies their unique characteristics.
