Volatile flavor components of two strawberry (Fragaria ananassa Duch.) varieties, Bogyojosaeng and Suhong, ere extracted by SDE(Simultaneous steam distillation and extraction) using a mixture of n-pentane and diethylether (1:1, v/v) as an extract solvent. Analysis of the concentrate by capillary gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry led to the identification of 146 and 153 components in Bogyojosaengand Suhong respectively. There were 49 esters, 25 alcohols, 20 ketones, 24 aldehyds, 6 acids, 9 terpenes and terpene derivatives, 2ethers, 11 unknowns and miscelaneous in Bogyojosaeng and 67 ethers, 9 unknowns and miscellaneous in Suhong. Among these, (E)-2-hexenyl acetae (4.56%) in Bogyojosaeng and (E)-nerolidol (12.38%) in Suhong were major compounds and aceticacid, (E)-2-hexenal, hexyl acetate, ethyl acetate, ethyl butanoate, methyl butanoate, ethyl hexanoate and ${\gamma}$-dodecalactone were the main components in each sample, though there were several differences in composition and threshold of volatile compounds. Total contents of volatile components isolated and identified in Bogyojosaeng an Suhong were 9.010 and 12.527 mg/kg, respectively.
During 2010 and 2012 grape harvest seasons in Gyeonggi-do, Korea, a white stain symptom was observed on the harvested grape fruits in 'Campbell-Early' and 'Kyoho' varieties. In samples collected from the infected vine, two different strains of pathogenic fungi have been found and identified as Acremonium acutatum and Trichothecium roseum based on fungal morphology and nucleotide sequence of internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and supported by the phylogenetic analysis of the rDNA-ITS region. The DNA homologies of the isolated strains were 99.8% and 99.6% identical with T. roseum (IFB-22133) and A. acutatum (CBS682.71), respectively. In the pathogenicity test, the spores of A. acutatum and T. roseum sprayed on the grapes caused white stain symptoms on the fruits in two weeks after the artificial inoculation, which is similar to observations in the field. To our knowledge, this is the first report of white stain symptoms caused by A. acutatum and T. roseum on the grapes in Korea.
Six parent and their 12 gamma ray-induced somatic flower colour mutants of garden rose were characterized to discriminate the mutants from their respective parents and understanding the genetic diversity using Random amplification of polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. Out of 20 primers screened, 14 primers yielded completely identical fragments patterns. The other 7 primers gave highly polymorphic banding patterns among the radiomutants. All the cultivars were identified by using only 7 primers. Moreover, individual mutants were also distinguished by unique RAPD marker bands. Based on the presence or absence of the 48 polymorphic bands, the genetic variations within and among the 18 cultivars were measured. Genetic distance between all 18 cultivars varied from 0.40 to 0.91, as revealed by Jaccard's coefficient matrix. A dendrogram was constructed based on the similarity matrix using the Neighbor Joining Tree method showed three main clusters. The present RAPD analysis can be used not only for estimating genetic diversity present in gamma ray-induced mutants but also for correct identification of mutant/new varieties for their legal protection under plant variety rights.

Fifty-one isolates of Xanthomonas oryzae collected from all over the Korean paddy field were classified as the eight different strains by using four different bacteriophage types. Strain-F was the most prevalent form and strain-H,C, and A followed the strain-F, respectively. Strain-D, however, had not found even single isolate although the strain·D is the most prevalent form at Japan and southern countries of Asia. There was no corelation between the type of strains and the area front which the strain had been collected. Six different types of strains were isolated from IR 667 varieties whereas the three strains were maximum that could isolated from single variety other than IR 667.

Vigorous root growth at the seedling stage in dry direct-seeded conditions is considered as a critical trait because it is involved in seedling emergence, early vegetative vigour, nutrient uptake as well as drought tolerance. In this study, we performed QTL mapping using the recombinant inbred lines obtained from the cross between Tongil-type Dasan and temperate japonica TR22183 (DT-RILs) to identify QTL underlying early root development. TR22183, which was previously reported to have high nitrogen utility and cold tolerance, showed vigorous root growth at the seedling stage in semi-drought conditions. Root length, fresh weight and dry weight of TR22183 were significantly higher than in Dasan. By QTL analysis with genotyping-by-sequencing method, we identified two QTLs for root fresh weight (RFW) in chromosome 7 and root dry weight (RDW) in chromosome 8, explaining phenotypic variances of 13.5% and 10.6%, respectively. These QTLs would be used to develop rice varieties adapted to direct-seeded cultivating system.

Adverse environmental conditions such as drought, high salt and cold/freezing are major factors that reduces crop productivity worldwide. According to a survey, 50-80% of the maximum potential yield is lost by these "environmental or abiotic stresses", which is approximately ten times higher than the loss by biotic stresses. Thus, improving stress-tolerance of crop plants is an important way to improve agricultural productivity, In order to develop such stress-tolerant crop plants, we set out to identify key stress signaling components that can be used to develop commercially viable crop varieties with enhanced stress tolerance. Our primary focus so far has been on the identification of transcription factors that regulate stress responsive gene expression, especially those involved in ABA-mediated stress response. Be sessile, plants have the unique capability to adapt themselves to the abiotic stresses. This adaptive capability is largely dependent on the plant hormone abscisic acid (ABA), whose level increases under various stress conditions, triggering adaptive response. Central to the response is ABA-regulated gene expression, which ultimately leads to physiological changes at the whole plant level. Thus, once identified, it would be possible to enhance stress tolerance of crop plants by manipulating the expression of the factors that mediate ABA-dependent stress response. Here, we present our work on the isolation and functional characterization of the transcription factors.n factors.
A morphological study of Korean Fimbristylis was conducted in order to clarify the taxonomical position and scientific names among species. It was determined that the anther size and style length are important characteristics for the species-level identification of Fimbristylis. It was confirmed that Fimbristylis ovata (Burm.f.) J. Kern, which is recorded in the literature but which has no sampling specimens in Korea, grows on the grassland on Marado Island. According to this study, the genus Fimbristylis in Korea is classified into a total of 21 taxa, including four sections, nineteen species, and two varieties.
South Korea is pushing for the advancement of crop production technology to achieve food self-sufficiency and meet the demand for safe food. A medium-sized satellite for agriculture is being launched in 2023 with the aim of collecting and providing information on agriculture, not only in Korea but also in neighboring countries. The satellite is to be equipped with various sensors, though reference data for ground information are lacking. Hyperspectral remote sensing combined with 1st derivative is an efficient tool for the identification of agricultural crops. In our study, we develop a system for hyperspectral analysis of the ground-based reflectance spectrum, which is monitored seven times during the cultivation period of three soybean crops using a PSR-2500 hyperspectral sensor. In the reflection spectrum of soybean canopy, wavelength variations correspond with stages of soybean growths. The spectral reflection characteristics of soybeans can be divided according to growth into the vegetative (V)stage and the reproductive (R)stage. As a result of the first derivative analysis of the spectral reflection characteristics, it is possible to identify the characteristics of each wavelength band. Using our developed monitoring system, we observed that the near-infrared (NIR) variation was largest during the vegetative (V1-V3) stage, followed by a similar variation pattern in the order of red-edge and visible. In the reproductive stage (R1-R8), the effect of the shape and color of the soybean leaf was reflected, and the pattern is different from that in the vegetative (V) stage. At the R1 to R6 stages, the variation in NIR was the largest, and red-edge and green showed similar variation patterns, but red showed little change. In particular, the reflectance characteristics of the R1 stage provides information that could help us distinguish between the three varieties of soybean that were studied. In the R7-R8 stage, close to the harvest period, the red-edge and NIR variation patterns and the visible variation patterns changed. These results are interpreted as a result of the large effects of pigments such as chlorophyll for each of the three soybean varieties, as well as from the formation and color of the leaf and stem. The results obtained in this study provide useful information that helps us to determine the wavelength width and range of the optimal band for monitoring and acquiring vegetation information on crops using satellites and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)
One thousand forty-four isolates of Pyricularia oryzae obtained during the period 1962-1974 front blast-infected rice samples from all rice-growing areas of Korea were tested on the Japanese differential set of twelve rice varieties. Twenty-seven races of the fungus were differentiated. The number of races falling in groups T,C and N were 4, 15 and 8, respetively. Since only Japonica type varieties had been cultivated widely before 1966, N-race groups were found to be most Prevalent with a frequency of about $85\%$ of the total isolates. After 1966, T-and C-race groups gradually increased to $21\%$ and $42\%$ respectively, as a result of the widespread cultivation of Tongil bred from a cross between IR8 x(Yukara x T(N)1. Before 1966, a few T, and C-race groups occurred only in the Suweon region; since 1966, most of the races differentiated have been uniformly distributed throughout the country regardless of region. The most prevalent races in Korea were N-2 and C-8. The variety Tetep was resistant to all races previously identified in Korea, but a new race (T-d) to which Tetep is susceptible has been found each year since 1973. It appears likely that races capable of attacking Indica types of rice will become increasingly prevalent and a programme of continuous screening is needed to detect new races as soon as they appear.
