  • The Internation Maritime Organization (IMO) has required that ships other than cellular-ships which carry cargo units and other entities should be provided with a cargo securing manual. A number of serious accidents has resulted from improper stowage and insufficient securing of heavy cargo. The cargo claims caused by the accidents stated above not only reduce the number of shippers but also reduce their benefits. The following four basic safe items should be considered carefully in the carriage by sea in case of two tiers loading of heavy cargoes packed with wooden case if it is a general cargo ship. a) Safe stowing place b) Safe lashing c) Protecting crushing goods d) Adequate dunnage. All operators of cargoes must be reminded that only the proper stowge and securing of heavy cargos can prevent from the occurrence of such accidents in the future. This paper intends to analyze the unigue damage mechanism for two tiers loading of heavy cargoes on the general cargo ships encountered in the rough sea, and suggest the countermeusere to prevent the identical accidents in the future.

  • Orthognathic surgery often requires intraoral orthodontic appliances that are fixed directly to the bone, which can complicate nasotracheal intubation if the devices protrude into the nasal cavity. This case report describes a 19-year-old man scheduled for elective orthognathic surgery who experienced recurrent cuff tears of the endotracheal tube during nasotracheal intubation due to protruding orthodontic screws in the palate. Despite initial attempts at nasotracheal intubation through the left nostril, the cuff of the 7.0 mm internal diameter (ID) Ring, Adair & Elwyn (RAE) tube repeatedly ruptured, with identical rupture patterns observed. Facial CT revealed that the orthodontic screws had protruded into both nasal cavities with significant visibility in the sagittal, coronal, and transverse views. Fiberoptic examination of the left nasal passage identified a firm protrusion below the inferior turbinate, corresponding to the location of the screw, which likely caused the cuff tears. Intubation was successfully performed via the right nostril during the fiberoptic examination. This case highlights the critical importance of evaluating intraoral corrective devices using comprehensive craniofacial imaging before anesthesia induction, as well as conducting fiberoptic examinations during intubation to avoid complications and ensure patient safety.

  • Purpose: Various studies on a light shelf are in progress, but it has the problem of glare occurrence. The present study suggested a diffusion film as the method for resolving the glare problem, and aimed to establish light shelf-related basic data by conducting the performance evaluation of a light shelf depending on the installation position of the diffusion film. Method: To carry out the light shelf performance evaluation depending on the diffusion film installation position, three cases were established: no diffusion film installation (Case 1), diffusion film installation on the reflector (Case 2), and diffusion film installation on the upper glass surface of the window for light shelf installation (Case 3); and the energy reduction performance, luminance, and luminance contrast were analyzed based on a testbed. Result: The conclusions of this study are as follows. 1) When the diffusion film was applied, the amount of light introduced through the light shelf decreased, and the average indoor illumination decreased accordingly. 2) For Case 3, the lighting energy reduction performance was identical to the lighting energy reduction efficiency of the existing light shelf; and for Case 2, it was found to be inappropriate as the lighting energy consumption increased compared to that of the existing light shelf. 3) The analysis of the glare for the cases established in this study showed that the luminance contrast was low for Case 3, and thus the glare problem could be minimized. 4) The specific angle of the light shelf could induce the glare problem by increasing the luminance depending on the external condition. 5) Based on the aforementioned contents, the installation position of the diffusion film for improving the lighting performance and glare problem of the light shelf was found to be the upper glass surface of the window for light shelf installation.

  • This study analyzed the impact when Korea expands Chinese Renminbi(RMB) as invoicing currency on the trade to China using Monte-Carlo simulation. Primarily, we analyzed the impact on the balance of Korean Won(KRW) converted from RMB in a case that simulated exchange rate(Korean won to Chinese Renminbi) and realized historically identical probability distribution but in different stochastic process. In addition, we developed the simulation of the case where the volatility of RMB to KRW exchange rate abnormally expanded. The major results found in this study are as follows. First, in the case where RMB exchange rate simulated in identical probability distribution but in the different stochastic process, no matter how much RMB was utilized as invoicing currency, expansion of the RMB exchange rate and exchange rate volatility operated as positive mechanism to increase the KRW converted balance. Secondly, while the expansion of US dollar exchange rate volatility positively influences the balance on average, it caused a polarization of balance, which makes under-average-balance lower and over-average-balance higher. On the contrary, the expansion of RMB exchange rate volatility even shows a similar mechanism but the impact is more moderate than USD exchange rate volatility. Thirdly, as RMB exchange rate volatility expanded, the balance of translated invoicing currency (RMB) declined, whilst the negative impact of RMB exchange rate volatility on balance of translated invoicing currency(RMB) showed diminishing effect. Lastly, the influence of RMB's exchange rate volatility through RMB usage ratio trends similar to bull spread strategy, which is a combination of call option with put option. Therefore, since RMB usage in invoicing currency could spawn a hedging effect, corporations might utilize RMB as a strategic device for maximizing profits.

  • The effects of the different rib geometries such as V-shaped continuous (case A), parallel broken (case B), and V-shaped broken (case C) ribs on the heat transfer and pressure drops in a divergent channel with $45^{\circ}$ inclined ribs on one wall or two walls are checked out. The top and bottom walls are adiabatic; two side walls are uniformly heated in the divergent rectangular channel. The tested Reynolds numbers are ranged from 22,000 to 75,000. The channel with two opposite walls inclined only has the length of test section of 1 m and the channel divergence ratio of $D_{ho}/D_{hi}=1.49$, corresponding to $1.43^{\circ}$ inclined walls. The results show in the identical pumping power that the V-shaped continuous rib (case A) with two ribbed walls is the greatest, but the parallel broken rib (case B) with one ribbed wall is the worst in the thermal performance.

  • Groundwater flow in confined aquifer and heat transport in underground geologic media are using same governing equation(line source) like well fuction. Therefore the conventional slope method using only later data obtained from in-situ thermal response test to determine the thermal conductivity of vertical geothermal heat exchanger(GHEX) is basically identical with one of Theis straight line method of aquifer test under artesian condition. In case that the pumping rate(Q, $m^3$/d) and drawdown(s,m) which are used for input data of existing hydrogeologic computer programs for aquifer test are replaced and converted to supplying heat energy per unit length of bore hole(Q/L,w/m or Kcal/h.m) and temperatures (T,$^{\circ}C$)measured at in and out-let of GHEX as in put data respectively, thermal conductivity around geothermal heat exchanger can be easily estimated without any special modification of the existing hydrogeologic computer program. Two numbers of time series temperature variation data obtained from in situ geothermal response test are analized using Theismethods(standard curve and straight line method) by using existing aquifer test program and conventional Slope method proposed by ASHRAE. The results show that thermal conductivity values estimated by two straight methods are identical and the difference of estimated values between standard curve methods and Slope method are also within acceptable ranges. In general, the thermal conductivity estimated from Theis straight linemethod gives more accurate value than the one of Slope method due to that Slope method uses only visual matching otherwise Theis method uses automatic curve matching estimation with reducing RSS.

  • The bone is composed of the bone matrix of collagen and hydroxyapatite, the mixture of calcium and phosphours. The bone tissue is considered to the special connective tissue that possesses extracellular matrix made by collagen fiber deposited with mineral complex. In order to maintain bone mass measured by the sum of bone matrix and hydroxyapatite, bone resorption by osteoclast during lifetime and bone remodeling to form bone by osteoblast in its resorption region repeat continuously. The osteoblast has a mesodermic fetal origin like fibroblast for the formation of form tissues. Two cells express identical genes and synthesize the identical collagen type I as the major component of the formation of bone matrix and skin. Therefore, it is considered that the decrease of skinfold thickness and the decrease of bone mass related to the age, the change of two tissues composed of collagen type I is caused by the same genetic mechanism. The decrease of bone mass is caused by the change of the amount and structure of bone matrix by several factors and the amount of minerals deposited on bone matrix. Especially, in case of female, the deficiency of estrogen by menopause makes these changes rapidly increased. The decrease of bone mass and skinfold thickness is due to the decrease of the amount of collagen and its structural change the common component of bone tissue and skin tissue. Therefore, the relationship of the amount of cross-linked peptide N-telopeptide, collagen metabolite which excretes as urine. Based upon the proved results about the significant relationship of bone mass, the amount of bone collagen, the amount of skin collagen and skinfold thickness, the bone mass may be expected through a facile determination of skinfold thickness.

  • Objectives: This study was undertaken to investigate the source of infection and mode of transmission of shigellosis, which occurred sporadically among residents and students in a subcounty of Cheongwon county, Chungbuk province, Korea, from June 4 to July 3 2003. Methods: 692 subjects completed a questionnaire and provided a swab for microbiological examinations, and 7 environmental specimens were examined for bacterial organisms. PFGE (pulsed-field gel electrophoresis) and fingerprinting were performed to find the genetic relationship among the temporally associated sporadic isolates. Results: A total of 29 patients had symptoms consistent with the case definition, with 13 confirmed and 16 suspected cases. The frequency of diarrhea was 6 times or more a day (80.8%), with a duration of 1 to 4 days (88.5%) in most cases. The most common symptoms accompanying the diarrhea were fever (80.9%) followed by abdominal pain (76.9%), headache (65.4%), chill (61.5%), vomiting (46.2%) and tenesmus (15.4%). The epidemic curve was characteristic of a person-to-person transmission. The PFGE and fingerprinting demonstrated identical or similar DNA patterns among the 3 Shigella sonnei isolates (A51, A53 and A61 types) found in this outbreak. Conclusion: A genetically identical strain of S. sonnei was estimated to be the cause of this outbreak, and the mode of transmission was most likely person-to-person.

  • A numerical study of heat and mass transfer has been carried out for a frost formation process on a circular cylinder in a cross flow including the effect of buoyancy. Studies include cases of low and high Reynolds number flows. The effect of normal velocity at the surface which is produced due to mass transfer was included in the analysis as well as heat transfer contribution generated due to mass transfer. Variations of heat transfer and frost growth both in time and in the circumferential direction have been obtained for various buoyancy parameters. The effect of flow directions(identical or opposite directions to the gravity) has been studied to yield different frost growth. Our results have been compared with existing experimental data and are in good agreement. Buoyancy analyses for a high Reynolds number flow agree with full numerical solutions for the case of having the same flow direction as gravity. However, for the opposite direction case, the boundary layer analyses would not be applicable to predict frost growth except the region near the stagnation point.

  • The performance of a centrifugal compressor composed of an impeller, tandem diffuser rows and axial guide vanes has been predicted numerically and compared with available experimental results on its design rotational speed. The pitchwise-averaged mixing plane method was employed for the boundaries between rotor and stator to obtain steady state solutions. The overall characteristics showed difference according to the relative positions of tandem diffuser rows while the characteristics of impeller showed almost identical result. The numerical results agree with the measured data in respect of their tendency. It turned out that $0\%$ of relative positions is the worst case in terms of static pressure recovery and efficiency. According to the experimental results, some pressure fluctuations and malfunction of the compressor were observed for $75\%$ case. However, this numerical calculation using mixing plane method did not capture any of those phenomena. Thus, unsteady flow calculation should be performed to investigate the stability of the compressor caused by different diffuser configuration.
