  • It has been known that the amplifiers for high power signal in satellite communication channels suffer from nonlinear distortions, which reduce the performance of the communication channel significantly. In order to compensate the nonlinear distortion, a new data predistortion method with the LMS algorithm is proposed in this paper, Whereas the previous approach handles this problem by assigning corresponding predistorter to each symbol for the case of 16-QAM, the proposed approach uses the same memory for the symbols, which have identical amplitudes, and predistors the input of high-power amplifiers by the amplitude and phase differences, resulting in better adaptive data predistorter with small number of digital memory (3 predistorters) and fast convergence rate. Superiority of the proposed approach in the paper is demonstrated by comparing it with the previous approach.

  • Pseudohyperplastic prostatic adenocarcinoma is a rare histologic variant of prostatic adenocarcinoma that resembles benign nodular hyperplasia. Immunohistochemistry can verify the absence of basal cells, but it is frequently admixed with conventional adenocarcinoma. Because fine needle aspiration cytology is rarely performed in primary prostatic adenocarcinoma, the cytology of the pseudohyperplastic variant has not been described. We experienced a case of metastatic pseudohyperplastic adenocarcinoma in a pulmonary nodule of 75-year-old man. The cytologic smear was mostly composed of large, flat sheets with elongated branching papillae in a clean background. The sheets showed a well-defined honeycomb appearance of tall columnar, regularly arranged monotonous cells with little cytologic atypia. In subsequent prostatic biopsy, pseudohyperplastic variants were identified together with conventional adenocarcinoma of Gleason's grade 3 and 4. The cytologic features of pulmonary nodules were identical to those of pseudohyperplastic components of prostatic adenocarcinoma.

  • This paper presents the first known application of a meta-heuristic algorithm, variable neighbourhood descent (VND), to the redundancy allocation problem (RAP). The RAP, a well-known NP-hard problem, has been the subject of much prior work, generally in a restricted form where each subsystem must consist of identical components. The newer meta-heuristic methods overcome this limitation and offer a practical way to solve large instances of the relaxed RAP where different components can be used in parallel. The variable neighbourhood descent method has not yet been used in reliability design, yet it is a method that fits perfectly in those combinatorial problems with potential neighbourhood structures, as in the case of the RAP. A variable neighbourhood descent algorithm for the RAP is developed and tested on a set of well-known benchmark problems from the literature. Results on 33 test problems ranging from less to severely constrained conditions show that the variable neighbourhood descent method provides comparable solution quality at a very moderate computational cost in comparison with the best-known heuristics. Results also indicate that the VND method performs with little variability over random number seeds.

  • In this research, silicone rubber with additions of inorganic filler, alumina trihydrate$(Al(OH)_3\;:\;ATH)$, was aged acceleratedly and cyclically by the salt-fog and heating. The optimum amount of ATH addition to silicone rubber have been investigated by measurements of leakage current in the change of electrical properties and tensile strength, %elongation in mechanical properties and FT-IR, TG, SEM in the change of the chemical properties. With regard to un-aged silicone rubber, as the ATH addition amount increases, conductive path formation time was shortened in the electrical properties and tensile strength was increased, %elongation was decreased. In case of identical ATH addition amount, as cyclic aging increases, surface resistivity, tensile strength and %elongation were decreased. Considering the cyclic aging, the most effective amount of ATH addition was about 90phr.

  • The problem studied in this paper is the channel routing problem to assign points with p colors on the upper row of the channel to points on the lower row in order to minimize its density. The case that the points on the upper row has an identical color or only two colors is studied in [1, 2]. This paper generalizes that to the points with p colors. First, we consider the problem to determine whether there is an assignment with density less than or equal to d, when an arbitrary d is given. We show that the problem is solved in O(p(n+m)log(n+m)) time. Using this result, we resolve the problem to fine an assignment with a minimum density.

  • The electrically excited synchronous generator (EESG) is applied in wind turbine systems recently. In an EESG control system, electrical torque is affected by stator flux and rotor current. So the control system is more complicated than that of the permanent-magnet synchronous generator (PMSG). Thus, the higher demanding of the control system is required especially in case of wind turbine mechanical resonance. In this paper, the mechanism of rotor speed resonant phenomenon is introduced from the viewpoint of mechanics firstly, and the characteristics of an effective damping torque are illustrated through system eigenvalues analysis. Considering the variables are tightly coupled, the four-order small signal equation for torque is derived considering stator and rotor control systems with regulators, and the bode plot of the closed loop transfer function is analyzed. According to the four-order mathematical equation, the stator flux, stator current, and electrical torque responses are derived by torque reference step and ramp in MATLAB from a pure mathematical deduction, which is identical with the responses in PSCAD/EMTDC simulation results. At last, the simulation studies are carried out in PSCAD software package to verify the resonant damping control strategy used in the EESG wind turbine system.

  • Load Flow calculation methods can usually be divided into Gauss-Seidel method, Newton-Raphson method and decoupled method. Load flow calculation is a basic on-line or off-line process for power system planning, operation, control and state analysis. These days Newton-Raphson method is mainly used since it shows remarkable convergence characteristics. It, however, needs considerable calculation time in construction and calculation of inverse Jacobian matrix. In addition to that, Newton-Raphson method tends to fail to converge when system loading is heavy and system has a large R/X ratio. In this paper, matrix equation is used to make algebraic expression and then to solve load flow equation and to modify above defects. And it preserve certain part of Jacobian matrix to shorten the time of calculation. Application of mentioned algorithm to 14 bus, 39 bus, 118 bus systems led to identical result and the number of iteration got by Newton-Raphson method. The effect of time reduction showed about 28%, 30%, at each case of 39 bus, 118 bus system.

  • Empirical mode decomposition(EMD) method has been recently proposed to analyze non-linear and non-stationary data. This method allows the decomposition of one-dimensional signals into intrinsic mode functions(IMFs) and is used to calculate a meaningful multi-component instantaneous frequency. In this paper, it is assumed that each mode of damped vibration signal could be well separated in the form of IMF by EMD. In this case, we can have a new powerful method to calculate natural frequencies and dampings from damped vibration signal which usually has multiple modes. This proposed method has been verified by both simulation and experiment. The result by EMD method which has used only output vibration data is almost identical to the result by FRF method which has used both input and output data, thereby proving usefulness and accuracy of the proposed method.

  • A self-replicating RNA ligase ribozyme was converted to a cross-catalytic format whereby two ribozymes direct each other's synthesis from a total of four component substrates. Each ribozyme binds two RNA substrates and catalyzes their ligation to form the opposing ribozyme. The two ribozymes are not perfectly complementary, as is the case for replicating nucleic acid genomes in biology. Rather, the ribozymes contain both template elements, which are complementary, and catalytic elements, which are identical. The specificity of the template interactions allows the cross-catalytic pathway to dominate over all other reaction pathways. In the presence of $2{\mu}M$ each of the corresponding substrates, one ribozyme catalyzes the synthesis of the second ribozyme with an initial rate of $6.8{\times}10^{-3}\;min^{-1}$, while the second ribozyme catalyzes the synthesis of the first with an initial rate of $2.9{\times}10^{-3}min{-1}$. As the concentration of the two ribozymes increases, the rate of formation of additional ribozyme molecules increases, consistent with the overall autocatalytic behavior of the reaction system. Here, I present results that possibly demonstrate a clue for a self-replicating molecule by showing an RNA ligase ribozyme, which is reminiscent of 'Prebiotic Era'.

  • The ignition characteristics of a reactive solid with rough surface by constant heat flux were studied. The geometry of surface was represented by a set of identical protrusions having a shape of wedge based on the block of reactive solid. Several regimes of ignition were found, depending on the ratio of the protrusion length and the depth of the heated layer, formed in course of ignition process: 1) when the substance is ignited as the massive block, and the effect of roughness is not pronounced; 2) when ignited are the individual protrusions; and 3) in the intermediate region between the first two. Critical ignition conditions: ignition time and ignition criterion, are determined for the three regimes. The results are compared with the results for the one-dimensional ignition of the semi-infinite body. It is shown, that the effect of geometry on ignition results in the considerable reduction of ignition delay, and the amount of energy required for the successful ignition is less compared to the one- dimensional case.
